I use a flight suit for many reasons. By the way, it is Army Surplus! The flight suit is like coveralls, but made out of more durable material, and with lots of convenient pockets. Most cavers use coveralls, or flightsuits to protect their clothing, another reason is it slims the bulkiness of clothing so it is easier to fit into crawlspaces. I don't wear a flght suit for buildings, mostly for missions that require long times underground or any time when I would prefer to keep my normal clothes relatively clean. Here in the Twin Cities we have many caves and tunnels dug into the sandstone, this sandstone is pretty crumbly and you end up with sand in every crevice of your body, the flightsuit keeps the sand out of my ass, so that's why I really use it.

Asylunt beat me to it... I was going to mention that I see flightsuits at the surplus store all the time, it's regular stock in the places around here... Not such a weird thing to get for exploring, just looks weirder to wear out on the way somewhere.

The good thing about them though is that they easily slide on in a snap once you reach your destination, the ankles have zippers and that makes it easier to slip in and out of, but in my experience it's still easier to take your shoes off, especially if you have boots. Good for sanitary work, slip 'em off, into a trash bag, then straight into the washer. Nice walks in the poo, never left you feeling so fresh!

It is not army surplus, it is air force surplus. My local army surplus stores don't sell them. All the online army surplus stores I use don't sell them.

Sorry, but I'm just laughing at you now for wearing a flightsuit. You have to admit you did kinda make yourself an easy target. LOL.

Almost as bad as Intalex with his NBC suit.

Really, did you honestly think anyone was going to give you an easy ride? For gods sake, you don't need all that crap! Is it waterproof? Is it cold weather proof?

Surplus store here does sell them, so certainly not hard to find around this area. They don't seem to be a fast moving item though.

They do sell them around here, never thought to buy one though. Now that I know of some practical uses for them, maybe getting one is not without benefits.

I think people don't buy them because it's not exactly something you see people wearing around on the street alot, unless you're a pilot or have a thing for flightsuits.

Personally I just think its stupid. Really nobody needs a flightsuit for UE. I can't be bothered to rant on about how silly they'd look and how pointless it is. But honestly, you do the math, do you really think you are going to need a flightsuit?

I wear (as I think I've said before) a french army goretex waterproof pants and jacket. They have ripstop, camouflage pattern and lots of handy pockets. Great for UE.

It doesn't even have to be ex army. It could be anything, so long as it will survive exploring.

You know O2 you are reminding me of Intalex the more I read your posts.

I don't walk around in the damn thing, like I said before, it's for dirty missions, they go on and come off, leaving my plain clothes clean. The pockets are placed so that they don't interfere with climbing, crawling, etc. If you read up on actual spelunkers, they use them and ordinary coveralls all the time. The flight suit doesn't look much different than normal coveralls, only more durable and with more pockets. I'm not some military fatigue junky, I purchased these cheaper than a new pair of coveralls and they are quite functional. You can wear whatever you want, and I don't believe that by saying I wear a flightsuit on SOME outings, makes me a target for humiliating jokes. Jester uses Tabi footwear and practices ninjitsu, because he finds it useful for his style, I don't make jokes about him. Tell ya what, if you ever make it over here to Minneapolis/St. Paul sometime, we'll explore some sandstone sewer tunnels, and while your brushing the sand off your clothes and digging it out of your asscrack, I'll be putting my flightsuit into my pack and clean enough to go eat at the Loring Pasta Bar afterwards.

Infidel! Minneapolis/St. Paul explorers go to Perkins or Mickey's afterwards. The challenge is to be so dirty that they they won't serve you. It hasn't happened yet, although we have been put in our own section before.

And what do you have against asscrack defoliation with St. Peter Sandstone? It builds character!

Oh yeah ok I totally agree mmmhmmm yeah thats great.

Translation: I don't read really long paragraphs like that, I like short ones that get to the point without a lecture.

Lets put it this way, for caving I use waterproofs or overalls. For UE I use my waterproof coldproof goretex thinsulate hoogimawotsit pants and jacket.

Am I not allowed to laugh at you for wearing a flightsuit to check out a tunnel? "Tally ho chaps! I'm going to get this little coal mine to do 4 G's!" Hehehehehehehehehehehe.

What you're telling me you can't see the funny side? Come on lighten up, so what who cares what you wear? It's not going to make you look "uncool" if someone finds it funny or makes a wise crack at you. In fact you'd look less like your head was excavating your bowels if you went along with it.

Yeah, I always hit those places up as well, but only the Perkins in the Suburbs stay open 24 hours these days, what's with that? Which Mickeys do you prefer, West 7th or The Streetcar? As if my ass would ever have enough cash (or desire) to eat at Loring Pasta Bar.

O2- Maybe you could use sarcasm qoutes or stupid emoticons, cause I couldn't tell you were joking. I just didn't think there was any cause for comparing me to Intalex, or acting like I was some kind of retarded idiot for my choice in gear. But I don't care, let us drop it and move on with the discussion about equipment, no sense degrading this thread to sensless flaming.

On Topic-
Has anyone got a perticular brand or style wader that they swear by? I'm looking into getting some soon, I have just used old rubber farm boots in the past, but finding it more practical to have a pair of waders. I was looking into Hip waders, as I can see many advantages to those over chest. Any other opinions?

The lack of 24 hour Perkins has made UE difficult. It's no fun if I have to drive half way across the cities just to get the after-trip lemonade. I've only been to the streetcar, so I can't compare. I locked the key in the bathroom last time I was there.

Oxygen: Calm down, you sound like Pyro's bitchier brother. You wear french army goretex waterproof pants and jacket with camo. You dont think that's more than what is always necessary?

People wear what they're comfortable in, and what works for them. There's no point in slamming other people's choices, unless there are obvious drawbacks, and there aren't in this case. I'd be suspicious of someone in a full biohazard suit, but surplus flight suits don't even move the needle on my weirdshitometer.

Oh yes, and we would hate it if something like that were to happen wouldn't we.

What the hell did I do to you? Firstly, I am never out in the woods without a good hunting knife. Only recently did I get one I would actually trust my life to. Secondly, I have used a machete 3 times in all my years of exploring the woods. Every time it was in a situation where the trail would not be noticed and in an area completely covered in overgrowth. I object to the standard use for machetes, that being to blaze a clear trail. I will use one on occasion (as I explained, when I need to go back to an area because it is too grown over to explore as is) but only when otherwise I would not be able to get through. Perhaps I misread the post before me and the person talking was refering to an area he could not have easily navigated without training. Still, I carry a hunting knife because it is a useful tool (not to clear brush, mind you) and I will only bring a machete if I know that the trail to be blazed will not be readily accesable to anyone else. It's that simple. Any questions? (seriously, I'll be happy to explain further), just PM me. If you're in WI, I can actually show you some of the areas where I've had to make trails. Forgive me, O2, I don't mean to rant as at first you said you were genuinly curious and I have no problem with that, but that next post was uncalled for....

EDIT: Sorry, but I just thought that "Chud-Bait" would make better Chud-bait than I....

Over Thanksgiving weekend I explored for 10 hours straight (awake for 30 or so) and we went to Perkins after a long night/day of exploring. It was 12pm or so, we were filthy from a drain, and we both kept falling asleep at our table

As for the flight suit I think it sounds very practical and useful. I don't think it's silly at all. I might even stop down at ragstock and check out their selection myself.

A: I haven't been to perkins in a long time. They always had the five for five or something like that.
B: Oxygen, a flight suit is not a "g" suit, which administers pressure to the body to alleviate the "black out " or "red out " situations a combat pilot might experience. It's basically a coverall with a bunch of pockets. Now, it's cold, I use a Carhaart coverall, but in the summer, I can see using a flight suit to go over regular clothes. Most are cheap, and unless they are historic, you don't need to worry about getting them dirty.
Or get a mechanic's coverall. The only thing lacking is a bunch of pockets (and zippered legs)

Yeah, I think he seems to misunderstand what is meant by a flightsuit so I will illustrate:

Flightsuit:

Anti-G Suit:

Wearing an Anti-G Suit would be pretty silly on an exploration and serve no purpose, as they are made to keep you from passing out when encountering high G-forces such as when you are flying a jet fighter. Flight suits are just normal clothes, except the pants and shirt are one peice and you just get in and out of it using a big zipper. There are no huge advantages to it over normal clothes except not getting sand in your buttcrack and being able to keep your street clothes clean. They aren't extremely expensive, and the only real drawback is that they may look a tad out of place as not many people wear them. The are certainly not impractical and will not hinder your exploration in any way, so get off it, if you don't like it don't wear it, but wearing a flight suit is no different than you wearing goretex (which isn't cheap I might add). Some people will not gain any benefit from wearing it, but by no means does that make them stupid.

"Because there's no possibility of real disaster, real risk, we're left with no chance for real salvation. Real elation. Real excitement. Joy. Discovery. Invention. Unless everything can get worse, it won't get any better." -Chuck Palahniuk
