IF you were going to bring a collapsable boat along, and if you were worried about stability, you could get a coracle.
I think 'coracle' is just a generic term for any boat that consists on waterprooof material stretched over a wicker-work frame, but they're generally flatbottomed and wide - basically in the shape of a rectange when viewed from above. They look stable and capacious, but probably slower than a canoe.

As for a cellphone, I ziplock mine and shove it in my pocket or bag. I have an old Nokia 6100 I bought at a thriftshop with a pre-paid SIM for UE situations, so I don't care if it gets smashed. It's survived surprisingly well though.

edit: get's smashed? stabe?

Ahh you cell phone slackers. Ziplocks PIFFF. ;) There is a product out on the market now designed to water proof most cell phones but you can still talk in them! No I am not spoofing they sell them where I live. Anyways there about 20-30 bucks and they dont work on every phone.... I cant remeber the company name eather... grrr. Well anyways its hard to talk but you can push all the buttons and use the thing and accidently drop it in the water no problem.

You can still talk through a freezer bag, and it costs far less than $30.

...but I don't own a cell phone, so what am I talking about?

As far as the collapsable boat thing, I like the idea of those small, portable kyaks they have. Nice, lighter than 55lbs, and everyone can carry their own shit. My minimum equipment consists of...
(I never did learn how to use that bullet thing)
-2AA Maglight (I don't often need more than this)
-Good pocketknife
-Muti-pliers (schrade; the knives in these things are a pain in the ass to use in a pinch, hence the pocket knife)
-Olympus C5000 (a recent addition)
-100' of black nylon rope
-A compass (yes, I have had to use it on occasion)
-Lighter/matches/firestarter
--My First Aid Kit:
-Duct Tape
-Ace bandage
-roll of gauze
-latex gloves (warning: I have been told that enough skin oil will soak through one pair to leave a partial fingerprint. Wear two if you need not be found)
Honestly, if I had a car, I'd bring a hell of a lot more than this, but sadly, I do not.

Yeah Latex isnt the best stuff. Mechanics gloves with suade (sp) wont leave prints. Leather will but unless you break crap they are likely not to fingerprint. If you find a dead body and hall but you dont really have to worry here in the US. Or if you find a gun. I typically go for a hevey pair of gloves. Like he said latex will work. Ohh yeah Latex gloves... people can be alergic to them so you might want to look into the other kind. Also there are flesh colored, blue ones, etc.

My usual kit is as follows:

Stuff on person:

Nightvision goggles.
Maglight.
Headlamp.
Waterproof Camo NBC suit.
Knife. (for cutting through thick weeds)
Waterproof hi leg boots.
2 way radio. (with headset)
Zippo lighter.
Kevlar Gloves.
Utility Belt.
Compass.
Binoculars.

Stuff in backpack:

Tent.
Sleeping bag.
Camo Net. (to disguise tent or self)
First Aid Kit.
Gasmask. (in case of asbestos, or gas leaks)
2x Screwdriver. (one of each type)
Cellphone.
Digital Camera.
Flask.
Food.

Everywhere I go, I go prepared with this stuff. The boots I use let me stand on a plate of metal heated to up to 300c, and the kevlar gloves I have allow me to climb a barbed wire fence without taking a scratch.

Most the time I don't even need the maglite, because the lamp on my head does the job. And most the time I don't even need light at all, because the nightvision makes it alot easier to see in the dark.

It's down to personal choice, but I prefer to take it like a military mission. That way I never get caught out by security.

Did you read your own post ?

You need boots that will let you stand on something heated up to 300 degrees ?
You need a tent and a sleeping bag ?

And I get flack for just wearing some camo and using a radio...

Why the hell should you get any "flak" for using radios and wearing camo? Wearing camo is a GOOD idea. It makes it harder for security to spot you, and if they do, you can just say that you are part of a military training exercise.

I made a point that my boots could withstand that much stress, to illustrate their hard wearing capability. I don't "need" to be able to stand on something that hot, but it sure helps to have boots that are strong enough to do that.

I do need a tent and a sleeping bag, because I often spend several days near a site. Doing this allows me to get more photos, and see more of the site.

I seriously don't get what your problem is. Does the fact that I come prepared piss you off or something???

[EDIT: I fail to see the point of sleeping at a site for a few nights. That will only increase your chances of getting caught. My friends and I have always talked about how cool it would be to either camp near a sight or at it for a few days. I have seen a few websites of people who do this, and I think it could be done at the right place(i actualy think I found one ) but there is no way id go as far as bringing a tent and stuff, id just have a nice sleeping bag. There have been a bunch of places that were a few hours away, that I always say I whished I had more time. We were at a place this past weekend and sericouly contimplating sleeping there, but by the time we were leaving it was gettin cold and no of us were prepared to spend the night.

The main mistake with this point is your use of the word AT. I don't sleep AT the site, I sleep NEAR the site. Not only that, but my tent is covered in camo netting.

You'd have to be an expert to be able to spot my tent, either that or follow me back.

How NEAR to the site do you sleep? 25 ft? 50ft? More?

And, it all depends on the location of your tent pertaining to whether or not I could find it. If it is in the deep forest, I might be able to find it. You have to perfectly match the color of the surrounding area to perfectly blend in. I'm not trying to start a brawl here, but sometimes people don't make sense. I.E. Night Vision is not needed unless you are in an

a) missile silo
b) cave/tunnel
c) thick forest

Otherwise a maglight with a red lens would do just fine. I think that carrying Night Vision when it ain't needed is pointless. And an NBC suit? My god, where do you live, near a chemical weapons factory? If you were to get attacked with a deadly weapon it'd probably be a gun or knife -- not anthrax. Even then the chances are quite slim. If you can name me one situation that you have had to use an NBC suit while UEing, then I will back off. Halloween isn't one. I mean a real life threatening situation with anthrax, etc... Until then, i'm a skeptic of what you speak of.

I take far more risks than most people here, but my reasons for using a camo NBC should be obvious.

THE most major reason, is that I can put it over the top of my clothes, and be totally water proof, and camo'd. The second most major reason, is that it allows me to pass through areas where caustic materials reaching my skin would be hazardous. I tend to explore abandoned research laboratories, chemical factories etc. simply because I find them more interesting.

I usually sleep about half a kilometer from the site, sometimes a little closer, depending on situations I don't care to go into.

And trust me, you wouldn't find my tent unless you were indeed a trained expert. I have several different coloured camo nets and tents, allowing me to completely blend into my environment.

I have nightvision goggles because they allow me to see in the dark without being lit up like a football stadium. Also, believe it or not, nightvision goggles provide GREATER visibility than even the most powerful torch. They allow me to visit sites at night, without having to take unnessacery risks with the lowered visibilty of torchlight. But I do use headlamps and maglights.

I most certainly do not wear an NBC suit to protect myself in the event of someone attacking me. I wear a stab vest under my clothing, just in case I do get attacked by someone in one of the buildings, but the NBC suit is there to protect against wet weather, to camoflage me from security guards, and to provide full protection against chemicals at the sites I visit.

Get it?

If you say it with the right tone of voice, you would be suprised how often it works! Just tell them that its a no gun exercise, explain that it wont get them (the security guard) in any trouble, and then look at your map and wonder off. It ALWAYS works!

If they ask why I was hiding, I just tell them that it's part of the training, and that there is another platoon out looking for me. If they insist on waiting for the platoon to arrive, I usually explain some story about how I read the coords on the map wrong.

I have all the gear, nightvision, tent, camo nets, sleeping bag - its all army issue so nobody ever asks questions.
