For those in MN, Fleet Farm seems to have some good deals. I picked up some nice rubber overboots there for $15. Didn't check prices on full waders though.

Waders starting at $25, I got some last week - they look ok.

That woman took my friend and I's cameras from us when we walked in the store, we were just walking around Downtown taking some pics and she thought we were going to take pics in the store, she needs me to go Rock out on her ass while I am wearing my pimpin Flightsuit!

Wahhh....Yeah....Whoa!.....Yeah.........A ROCK ON!

Over Thanksgiving weekend I explored for 10 hours straight (awake for 30 or so) and we went to Perkins after a long night/day of exploring. It was 12pm or so, we were filthy from a drain, and we both kept falling asleep at our table

LOL Yeah, I dozed off before we got our food, and immediately was dreaming of the Divine Drain about the small pipe that had the smell of soup coming from it. I suddenly woke up saying out loud that we should go in that pipe (it was an 8" ceramic pipe!)!
aNyWaY, Here is my UE list:

DRAINS/TUNNELS:
*Ziplock Bags- for cell phone, wallet, batteries
*Compass- Yes they work underground (lots of people don't know that)
*Crowbar or tire iron- helps for crackin manhole covers from below
CAVES:
*Headlamp- for hands free spelunking
BUILDINGS/HOUSES:
*Voltage Detector- It's always nice to be SURE that a bare wire is not a LIVE wire, or that the old door alarm is not active
*Screwdrivers- CAN come in handy if use is justified
BRIDGES:
*Rope- ?
GENERAL: I always dress in black, but then again, I am a Goth. Cargo pants are always a plus with about 8 pockets, replaces the need for a backpack. WATER! especially in steam tunnels where heat plays a major factor. Of course spare batteries, but I only carry spare flashlights.

LINEMAN BOOTS: Otherwise known as "Goth boots" or "combat boots" but are truly designed for climbing telephone poles. They have 3 buckles on the side and go up almost to your knees, to protect you if you accidentally brush a power line. With my lineman boots, I have climbed a bunch of ladders already, and a wall, and the corner of a building! and these boots are more awesome than any performance shoe I have ever worn!!! Easy to put on and comfortable as heck. The only problem I have run into them is getting my foot through a loop in our climbing rope, because my particular boots have a more squarish toe. Mine are not waterproof. Thats all I can think of for now.

This is something that can go on and on (as it already has lol) and i think everyone knows the most basic things you Better have on a typical UE mission

-Flashlights
-batteries
-First aid
-Camera

Thats just Simple basic crap...Thats not a full list of what you should have..
Myself i have your typical medpak, flashlights batteries little flag-type markers to help you find ur way, marker..so on and so forth

Easiest thing to do is this.. I have a local Army Surplus store, these guys are cool.. They can be trusted as well...(what other store shows their customers the proper way to throw a knife?).. These people always have good suggestions ask them if they have any good tips.. We found some camouflage Tape at my store and taped up our flashlights in camo tape this makes all reflections off the flashlights disappear and making your flashlight invisable (why you may ask... Because it makes it look kool!!!!) i will post pics later on.

I have a question though... Smoke bombs.... good or bad idea? I mean i can only see one sort-of Practicle use for these, if u are cornerd by security you let one off and disappear? does that count as vandalizing??

Keep Searching

Better be one bad-ass, chokingly intoxicating smoke bomb to even be worth trying, otherwise all you'll get is a one second head start and probably some kind of evasion charge.

yea i just bring a flashlight and if i have extra batteries i'll bring them too. i may bring a simple pocket knife but really nothing big. i figure that if your walking around with a katana or macheti, camo suite, a gun (or what looks enough like one), and all that other high tech stuff and millitairy surplus than it's alot more likely that your your going to get taken in by a police than if you just look like your taking a peak. if you really have explosives with you than you'll have a hard time explaining why your crawlin in the sewers with explosive, a gun look alike, and a macheti. i'm Sure that if thhy see you just walking about in an abandond building sewer thay will be m0ore likely to give you a lecture of how you shouldn't go in there and it's not safe blah blah blah than if you look like your out to kill someone in your full camo and your weapons. i'm not saying it's bad to be prepaired but i'm pretty sure the gun you don't need, the macheti you can live without, and the explosives are probobly going to get you locked up if not dead by accident before they are your saviore. my flashlight is $2.00 and i wouldn't have a second care if it broke but if i had nightvision i wouldn't take it UEing. but it's your stuff, and i couldn't care less what you bring but i'd probobly do things difforantly.

It's a matter of choice. Some situations warrant the tools and camo and whatnot, not everything people explore is an abandoned building or a drain. And night vision is fun

What you bring and wear...
<Reply # 209 on 3/1/2004 6:08 PM >

Okay, people, let's get realistic! Tactical vests and ninja gear (as fun it may be to wear it), will get you in more trouble than it is worth. First off, let's start with the United States. Within the past couple of years, security EVERYWHERE has been stepped up because of terrorism, whether domestic or international. If someone spots you in your 'ninja' garb, then they may call they police (or even worse, Federal officials) who WILL stop you, DETAIN you, and make sure there is a WRITTEN record of this. Same for other countries now too, except you can be held longer, with less rights...

Basic dark clothing is all you realistically need, along with a backpack or rusack. Also, bring weapons along should be a no-no. If you are a true explorer, then there is no need for weapons. Forget all the Hollywood hype, YOU ARE NOT going to stop terrorists from blowing up the world in that place you are checking out. It just does not happen.

Also, be careful with your tools, screwdrivers and the lot may be considered burglary tools by almost ALL law enforcement agencies. Carry a Leatherman Multi-Tool or the like. Alot of people have them now and they are not that conspicuous.

Finally, make sure you bring some water and maybe a snack or two. You do not know how many times I have seen people dehydrated from lack of water because they were too lazy to carry it. It should be an essential in any UE.

Well BigPoppaMikey, I respect your opinion, but don't really agree. The camo vs. no camo debate has raged on an on, and through all of it, i've worn it when it's what is needed to get into a place unseen. Everything has it's place...

I just wear my BDU blouse whenever I feel like it, or when I need it. It's made of pretty tough fabric, and so far, nothing's cut or torn through it. Almost like a thin piece of outer armor. I don't wear it for camouflage or anything.

What Jester's saying is that BDUs and Ninja garb are worn when you don't want to be seen, and what BigPoppaMikey is saying is that when you get caught dressed like that, you're going to be in for a whole lot of shit. I must agree with BigPoppaMikey on this one- I think that everyone here's obsession with that whole Ninja look is mostly due to it's aesthetic appeal (come on, what's cooler than a ninja?)- you can get equally good cover by wearing dark colored clothing, and a mask if you want, or do that T-shirt thing someone posted. Wearing all that ninja and BDU stuff will NOT garuantee you will not get caught. I can't see how a ninja uniform will work better than say, black pants, black sweater, and a black ski mask with a hood over your head. Let's be smart here- reduce your risks of getting into trouble.

You're better off dressing in dark normal clothes which you can hide in and still won't look that suspicious in the case you get caught, rather than dressing like a ninja, and getting caught in that.

Actually a ninja uniform in black is not the best. It's too dark, just like black pants and shirt etc... You stand out in the dark by virtue of being too dark... Greys and various camo shades are more effective.

Whatever happened to the tradition burglar look... watchcap and black turtleneck? That's classic. I wear the watch cap all the time. With my beard I look like a real degenerate.

I got your tour winner right here pussies, at least he'd crash out trying.

I got mine at the Warehouse one that's right near where I live, but I have seen them at other places. For some reason the army surplus places around the cities are kind of expensive, especially that one that is down in the Warehouse District, the woman that works there is a bitch! Cerebral told me about this outdoor gear outlet store, I can't remember the name but they had some cheap ones, just they were all some odd size and didn't work out for me. I found some that I think I am going to get at Ghetto K-Mart, and if you don't know where Ghetto K-Mart is, I suggest taking a trip to Lake and Nicollet, you'll instantly see why it's called Ghetto K-Mart.

And thanks Macsbug and Max for enlightening me about new Perkins locations, as my GF and I have been searching for them, it pisses us off that there is no place to eat when she gets off work at 3:00am around Downtown Minneapolis. Bleh.

sorry for possibly being out of topic...I haven't read the whole thing yet.
the outdoor gear outlet store is Sportsman's guide in South St Paul. Just north of 494 on Hardman. good for boots, outdoor clothes and many other redneck supplies.

The latest Sierra Trading Post catalog has 3.5mm neoprene chest waders, reg $85 for $45. oh, they're on http://www.sierratradingpost.com/EUI/controller.asp?N=0&Ntk=All&Ntt=waders&Nty=1&D=waders&Ntx=mode+ma tchallany&sid=405E2C803342617F, too.

somebody PM me with how to post that website so it just says 'here' and still has the link under it. ...I bet it has to do with that globe thingy at the top of the window...

heres my list, and yes its short as hell...

Backpack:
2x dorcy marine lamps, handle folds into a stand, and they adjust from a lamp to a harsh spot...
1x cheap eveready emergency flashlight
1x red led penlight, great for emergencys and as a backup when switching batteries
1x basic med kit (bandaids, self adhering compression wrap, small bottle of iso alcohol, small bottle of peroxide, some tylenol, a packet of burn ointment)
1x city map
1x compass
1x needlenose pliars
1x wire cutters
3x pens
1x notebook
odds and ends (string, parachute cord, face cover, some med maks, etc)

mini bag that fits in my backpack (like a norelco personal care bag):
2x rolls electrical tape
1x multitool
2x frs radios
1x tiny pocket knife
(i add stuff to it and attach it to a carabiner if i dont feel a need for the backpack)

vehicle:
maps of various cities, states, etc
2x more rolls of electrical tape
1x roll of aluminum tape
1x tabi boots
1x change of clothing

I still need to stock the vehicle, but am waiting for a while until i can actually make a list of what will be useful, emphasis on fitting into my backpack if need be.

I kind of miss my 1mill candlepower light as i just procured a few 12v rechargeables from an old ups system, but.... i eally dont think i need to see 1mile or so down a drain...

As much as I love the ninjas, the ski mask or ninja mask is a no no with the police, a dark bandana (head hanky) can quickly be put on the head and another across the face and you can then still hear better (the store bought ninja hoods and ski masks dont have ear holes). The hankys can then be put in a pocket and you tell the cops , if caught, that you have a cold.
The numerous flashlights carried is cool but as a final backup (who knows maybe you accidentally blew up your nomex backpack with your peroxide acetone black powder straw contraption and lost all your gear), I wear a Casio G shock watch. The light that it has on it for showing the time can guide you out of a world of Sh*% i.e. tunnel. Just make sure that you turn off the hourly chime.
"Damn, a guard is coming this way!"
"DING A LING A LING!!!! goes the watch "
and CHING A CLACK CLACK CLACK goes the shiny bracelets you will be wearing, compliments of the Rent a Cop

oh by the way, the store bought ninja hoods or balaclavas can really limit your periphiel vision, whereas the two bandanas allow full vision
