Pelican cases are high-quality waterproof plastic boxes. I have a small one, for carrying spare batteries when caving. Otter is another company that makes waterproof cases. Pelican cases: http://www.pelican.com/ Otter cases: http://www.otterbox.com/ Brightguy.com is a good place to buy waterproof flashlights and cases.

| | | Amazing products from pelican. Alas. they are VERY expensive, yet well worth it. I got a case for my 35mm and 2 lenses + accs and the cost was close to 200 CDN. Ouch! But my camera is safe rosie

| | | I have a small 18" x 18" pelican case, and large suitcase. The small case has popped off cliffs, fallen out of boats and off chairlifts, and been wedged between a car and wall. It also skidded a good 100ft down highway 11, which did rough up the case some, but also added character. I still have a well-loved and relatively non-dinged camera. And there's nothing cooler than releasing the pressure through the valve after flying! They are expensive though.

Mystery fluid (a twin-cities-based term for all things similar to or involving mixtures of sewage, graywater, funny-colored runoff, etc.) often behaves very similarly to water. Just make sure your nn-weatherproof equipment (photographic gear, food, etc.) is safely stowed in waterproof packaging (pelican cases, freezer bags, etc.) and you yourself are suitably protected with boots/waders, raincoats, gloves, hats, and whatever else you feel necessary. It's not too hard.

| | | there are a few cheap pelican case alternatives out there; a couple of AV companies make their own, and LOWe also makes some. The usual kit for me is as follows (I've been doing this for as long as I am old, I started in barns and construction sites as a little kid, along with someone who posts here as well): Sturdy pants (combats). Sturdy boots or hiking shoes (my docs make less noise, but are FAR from waterproof, the goretex shoes are more supportive and slightly less wet) Flashlight (currently a red filtered Minimag. It works well if you're accustomed to it) OSHA rated Filter mask for Organic vapours, or at least dust masks (this is probably a good idea in most of the derelict buildings, just because of what you may find in the dust) Spare filter masks fot the other guys who didn't bring any ("so, when did that raspy cough start, buddy? Oh, after you hit the grain silos, eh?") headcover (either a black watch cap, or some kind of rag) gloves small first aid kit, containing some kind of sterilizing agent, 5mm cordelette for quick sling making, scissors, medical tape and bandages Pocket knife Cellphone water Occasionnally: 10.5mm nylon core sheathed Rope that's the standard getup. Those filter masks have been pretty handy in a few spots.

| | | I like to go with me, a backpack, crowbar (for those pesky manhole covers!), and a flashlight. Occasionally lockpicks if I'm positive the site is abandoned and no ones going to get pissy about it. I don't like breaking things to get in, and I can lock it afterwards.

| | | Not to be offensive, but I think that a crowbar is a bit unethical tool for UEing, and it´s also hard to explain your intentions IF you happen to get caught, and even more if you get caught after running away from someone. I prefer to dress dark but casually. I usually use a black hooded jacket, dark olive green or black beanie, and dark brown or faded black pants. And old DC skateshoes, if they get wet, thats not a problem. I carry my stuff in a normal backpack. Stuff usually is couple of lights (headlight and a more powerful flashlight), sketchbook for drawing something interesting (no, not graffiti related!) and a camera. I'm planning on getting a tripod for the camera, which would make night photographing more easier, and also easier to appear to be a photographing enthusiast rather than a vandal. Also I always have my id and cellphone etc. I wouldn´t carry anything like knives, lockpicks, crowbars etc. with me, as I would be pretty sure those would be too difficult to explain if I would bump into a policeman or a guard, and it would be easier to talk myself out from the situation if I can id myself on the spot.

| | | Well I disagree with the knife issue. My knife generally speaking is 99% utility. Then again if Im desperate a ink pen can turn into one hell of a weapon. I really think everyone should have a sturdy pocket knife with them just incase something collapses or you get caught on something etc. Crowbars and ethics go a long way back, but I should point out how effect crowbars are on manholes and how many people have gone subterranean here? I think its less of a ethical decision and more of a utilitarian decision. Hell I have night vision and it comes out once in a blue moon. I actually had it out a day or two ago when I thought my friends were in hot water while UEing. I was going to use it to see if I could find them hiding from the cops and help them get out. Luckly they were fine and the cops had left.

| | | Well I have to agree about manholes and crowbars, I have actually used it for said purpose when I was like 12 years old (thats about 12-13 years ago...). Here where I live the manhole covers are not that heavy, and nowadays it´s easier to use small hook or something like that.

Well if you get into one of the active combat divisions you'll get to hump about 60 pounds of crap, but it's crap that you'll need. Kirby; good choice; I know it seems that you'll "waste" a few years of your life, but you're appreciated more than you know. I got all bent out of shape after some stoners got full rides at my college and got nuked at the academy. Regretting it ever since.
