2 litres of water, sometimes an extra 1 litre in a camelbak-style pouch if it's a hot day.
Sweater/long-sleeve shirt
Leatherman-style multi tool/knife in a belt pouch
Mobile phone
Food (usually a few chocolate bars)
Maps/plans of the site if possible (I have a folder full of all kinds of plans that I can gather)
Depending on site:
10x40 binoculars
S6 gas mask/respirator
Multi-head screwdriver
Limited first-aid kit (plasters, disinfectant cream, surgical tape)
30 metres of rope
Grappling hook (haven't found a use for this yet, but it cost me nothing.)
Various carabiners and attachments to secure things

1. AOSafety Mask with P100 filters,
2. Sony Cybershot 4.1meg with 512meg stick,
3. 3D Mag-Lite,
4. Columbia LED light with clip (goes good on caps)
5. Ontario "BackRoads" mapbook (do a lot of driving and can't stop to go into places with my wife and kid in the car),
6. 2AA Mag-Lite,
7. East and North Ontario (good for in the cities where I drive),
8. Work Gloves with pads,
9. Gerber Tool (Militry Issued),
10. Gel Pen,
11. Extra batteries (will ad more later),
12. Basic knife (kept very sharp),
13. Glasses cleaner (don't like to be blind), and
14. Sturdy backpack.
Anything else I might carry along?
I;m sure I'll add more later and do a little setup in the trunk of my car.

Jesus, I have a crapload of stuff in there don't I? It all fits in a small space too. This doesn't include what I carry in my pockets on a day to day basis either. So this is AT LEAST what I carry. Really it's mostly just crap that I've collected and stuck in my bag that I will NEVER USE.  When exploring I will usually take my asbestos mask, a tripod and some variation of a 2D flashlight - usually and angle-head military style one. I wear steel toe workboots and some variation of dark clothing. Depending on the situation I have a full rappeling/ascending setup I can take too. Rubber boots, Big Garity 1 milion candle power spot light, hard hat, and my tripod live in my car.

If I have my digital camera but no flashlight, I can take a picture and navigate according to the LCD screen. That's why my camera came before a flashlight for me.

I used all but 2-3 photos, forgot about them, and dug out the camera a few years later with the "develop before Dec 1999" sticker on the bottom. Lost many amazing pictures that way.
The next most important would probably depend on the location. Most locations, I would probably bring a respirator. Just with alot of these abandoned buildings, lots of dangerous stuff in them that can hurt you in the long run.

| | | | New to the forum,thought this is a good place to make a first post. It probably doesn't count as gear but I always bring another person. Between the two of us, each with a backpack, we take two hardhats, two 1 million cp flashlights, 2 6v flashlights, 2 headlights, three spair batteries and lamps for each light, a large first aid kit and a smaller one so we each have something, a 25 foot length of rope and a 100 foot length, a pulley (comes in handy some times), several water bottles, some snacks, a camera, and 2 led glowsticks. I also have a Streamlight Scorpion, a multitool, a xenon/led combo pistol grip flashlight, mechanics gloves, and the standard 2AA mini mag. Also we have as needed; chest waders, various tools, radios, and binoculars. We have a lot of flashlights but they all come in handy.

I usually leave the stuff in the car just in case, but then again where we go you may need a boat, rappelling gear, or other items I might fail to mention. But if I know exactly where I'm going and what I need, I bring just that. And if on the bike maybe even less. Umkay? Now lock this Biotch up.

I sometimes social engineer my way in places and if that's the case it depends on how I'm portraying myself. I normally have either a case of some sort to carry all my stuff or it all fits on my person, depending on the "persona"
Usually it's:
- Flashlight
- Pen/Pencil & Paper (notebooks)
- Research on the location (maps, printouts, etc)
- Radios (even when I'm solo, I like to have someone on the outside)
- Camera of some sort (don't have a working digi as of now)
- Basic tools (pliers, screwdrivers)
- Knives
- A little kit containing mini-visegrips, mini LED flashlight, knife and a safety whistle (not that I've ever used it, but it keeps everything fitting nicely)
- Cellphone
As an aside, all I've got to say is a courier or a guy in a suit can get just about anywhere
