Another good self-defense item would be a simple, long, blanket or shroud of some type.
You could quickly find a well-hidden corner and make yourself appear as a pile of discarded rags.
Another good use would be to throw it over some potential attackers/aggressors, push them down and make a run for it.

I think you should worry more about exploring unless your on a S&D mission. There is no point in carrying ineffective, half-assed weapons that won't get the job done, and will still get you arrested.
