I carry a spare canteen, a great deal of powerbars, of course, my gun and my knife, and my survival kit. It has everything I need to make fire, signal, first aid, ect.

This moron carries a GUN while exploring! WTF. First what in the hell does a gun have anything to do with exploring. Second you have any IDEA how much trouble your dumbass will be in when you get caught. Third and more importantly, do you realize how bad this will make all explorers look when your dumbass gets caught, with a gun, and then tells the cops you were just exploring? I say ban this idiot, exploring is not about thinking you are a badass and carrying weapons, boot the mutha trucka!

i seem to take less than most people here but my list is
topside -
1 torch (LED Lensor powerchip v2)
1 back up torch (cheap thing)
spare batteries
5 mp digital camera
i just bought a respirator so ill start taking that!

for drains i take the same equipment and also -
1 pair gum boots
1 head torch (for hands free crawling!)
1 pair rubber gloves
knee pads (for for long tunnels that involve a lot of crawling)

i havent figured out an easy way to take a sledge hammer and crowbar to pop manhole covers exploring with me so i normally keep them in the boot of my car

i keep everything in my backpack with the torch either in my hand or in a strap on my belt

thats always done the job for me.

Found this a while ago.

http://www.rewci.com/telladmod321.html

It'd be pretty usefull if you knew that you had to do some climbing.

BLACK ANODIZED For Special non-reflective applications
As used by State, Local & National Law Enforcement and the US Millitary.
Length 30 inches to 12.5 Feet (fully extended)
Weight 22 lbs.
Outer dimensions of packaging 31" x 3.5" x 19.5".

I found one of these not too long ago.. I thought it was pretty bad ass too.. then ShinKen pointed out the weight to me.. that this is friggin heavy.. 20lbs isn't that much, but after a few hours of that thing strapped to yer back it'll take it's toll.. Personally I would just stick to a rope/grappling hook.. (although rope weighs alot too it has more uses in my opinion, not to mention that I think I figured out a good way to make an ascender for paracord, which means for that weight I would have WELL over 8,000 feet of rope, so needless to say I would be getting rid of ALOT of weight)

Olaf, you would be suprised what you come across. I have a License to carry a concealed weapon, and every now and then i do carry one, when my trips take me into the back woods areas where i live. I also carry pepper spray, and a collapsable baton. They don't have anything to do with exploring, but they have everything to do with personal safety, because you never know what you will come across in some abandoned places. You could run into things like a pot patch, meth lab, or a moonshine still (yeah, they're around). So let me ask this, am I a moron because i carry one too? I've come across a bear, wolves, and a mountain lion. A moron is a person that goes into a situation unprepared, remember that.

The best thing to do is ask yourself a few questions first...

1. have i been there before? if so you already know what kinda stuff to expect so pack for it.

if you havent...

pack for what you think it might be like...caves=flashlights, water, boots etc.
drains= more flashlights, backpack, lightstick(s), alot of batteries...etc.

basically sit down and plan....

what if you get lost?
what if you get caught?
where are you going to do your ue?
just simple things like that can prepare you mentally and also help you decide what to bring with you, also think about security. if you were the owner of this place if its a building where would you put security to make sure no one got in? simple questions are often the most helpful

You bring up a good point. I always sit down and plan for any situation i might get into. I don't like taking chances.

My thoughts, exactly.

I spent the weekend reading (again) Infiltration magazines issues 1-23. There probably is not many amongst us who have explored in as many places as Ninjalicious had, and did he carry a weapon? No, not to my knowledge. Why? probably because 99,999% of the time you can run or talk yourself out of anything.

I don't want to debate about license to carry subject, but, if you are encountered by law, please dont mention a word about UE as a hobby if you are carrying more than a flashlight.

(edit: removed some of anti-gun BS I wrote, don't want to start debating about the subject. I just can't see why some of you are carrying a firearm around...)

Thanks for editing out the anti-gun BS Outcast , but do me a favor, read my entire post next time. I stated that i only carry one when i go into the backwoods area around my home. I leave it home when i explore, when i am able to explore. And Olaf, think before you speak next time, ok. Name calling has no place here.

The main and pretty much only reason I carry blades on me during UE (and pretty much everyday where ever I go) it's a very handy tool.. I use my knife to cut food, I use it to cut rope, boxes, jam open doors, pop locks on doors open (You'd be surprised how many doors can be opened faster with a butter knife then with a key) I don't carry my knives because I think I am going to get mugged, or because I forsee the need to 'shank' someone.. I carry a knife because it makes life easier as a good tool should.. I realize some people get all bent out of shape when a knife is mentioned, but why not carry something that has such a vast array of uses.. I have a few for different purposes, I always have my folding knife on me, it's my main utility knife.. Then on the side of my backpack I have a cheap but sturdy fixed-blade which i've used more as a prybar then a knife, for times when I don't want to risk damaging or breaking my folder..
Thats just my two cents.. although I shouldn't feel the need to justify myself, not everyone that carrys a knife carrys it as a dedicated weapon.. Just something to think about

Woah dudes, were not fighting a war here. We're exploring. A knife i can understand, but guns, batons, and pepperspray? It seems there's a good deal of people who want to play commando rather then check out abandoned buildings and the like. I've explored with nothing more than the clothes on my back. If i go with more than that it's always specific things. If i need to cut barbed wire i bring wire cutters. If i need to pop a manhole i bring a crowbar.

In my opinion, some people here are kind of losing sight of the idea of UE: Its about exploration, not an exercise in urban combat.

I usually bring a flashlight, a camera and my wits. You'd be surprised how nice people can be if you approach them with an open mind instead of a drawn gun. Call me naive but i'm to encounter a situation where ive been in need of anything to defend myself besides my words of legs.

Has anyone here actually ever shot, maced, or knifed a guy? Or even threatened too?

Nope never been put into a situation where I've had to do anything of the sort.. and I think I have fairly good reasoning behind what I carry.. beside it'd be easier to explain why I have a knife on the side of my pack rather then a crowbar..

And this talk of how people are losing the sight of UE.. Well maybe thier ideas of UE are slightly different then someone elses.. Who is anyone to say that because of how someone explores or because of what he carrys he isn't up to par.. Seriously UE isn't some full blown extremely established hobby with leagues guidelines and rules like a friggin bastardized baseball team.. I dunno.. I just don't get it.. I suppose if you think differently then someone else it automatically makes them wrong and below you..
The day UE is recognised and you can trump trespassing charges in the name of UE via your UE ID then you can say someone is wrong and doesn't follow the rules.. Untill then I don't see the point of petty arguments like that. It just really bugs me when people say that someones wrong because of the way they think, and I've been seeing that ALOT..

Never in my life have I ever, while exploring, been threatened, or had to defend myself. Bringing guns are stupid, just as the reasons people are posting here are. Like you said, its about exploring stuff, not playing commando.

I know for sure I wouldn't want to go exploring with some guys who pack 9mm's and big knives, because that can lead to more danger then exploring with a Minimag and a water bottle. If some rookie cop or security guard sees a guy roaming around some abandoned building or storm drain or steam tunnels, dressed in BDU's, carrying handgun and 900 dollars in military surplus gear...do I even need to continue?

Guns are ridiculous. The most I bring is a small, 99 cent dollar store kitchen knife, and that isn't used for defense, its used to cut stuff.

(And sorry for adding to this 'debate'. )

I agree. Running around waving a gun (or a replica like lots of people have said they bring) is a very good way to get yourself shot. However, if you know what you're doing, legally carrying a concealed weapon is a very safe and sensible way of ensuring your protection.

If I'm out in public and packing, there are only three ways anyone could know I'm armed:
1) I tell them (Obvious)
2) I'm frisked (This is where the legal part is important.)
3) I'm in a life-threatening situation, there is no other way out and I draw (If it's him or me, I'll make damn sure it's not me.)

IANAL, but I do know that some states and municipalities have laws providing for more strict punishments if you are carrying a weapon while committing certain crimes. Something to think about if you're hitting an active site.

It all boils down to familiarizing yourself with the possible situations in which you might find yourself and ensuring that you are appropriately prepared.

On an initial scouting trip, I bring water, food, and a flashlight. If the trip will call for rope, or a lockpick, or the like, then I come back for a second shot. No point in carrying all of it around all the time. It does get heavy, and sometimes gets in the way. Besides, the more gear you have, the harder it is to make someone believe that you just popped in for a quick look around.

In response to graywolf a few posts back, I also carry a handgun when I am checking out backwoods sites. It is perfectly legal to carry an UNCONCEALED handgun in New Mexico, and a lot of the places I go, I am concerned about encountering mountain lions, bears, feral dog packs, and rabid animals. I will say I would feel pretty foolish toting a piece around a factory in north Dallas or some other big town. Just going to cause more problems than it will solve.

I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread.

The reality is that people do get hurt, raped, robbed etc. in abandoned buildings and just in general. I don't see the need for guns (except in the back country), or big knives, any of that shit, but I think if someone feels safer carrying pepper spray there's no harm in that.

I have saved myself from a mugging before. A man came at me out of the woods with a knife, demanding my wallet. I had a large wrench hung from one of my pack straps, where he couldn't see it. I hit him with the wrench, knocking him down, and maybe even out, though I wasn't going to stop and check. Then I ran like mad. I always carry that wrench now.

Carrying a moldy old adjustable wrench isn't going to draw allot of suspicion.
