thought this might be of use to people in illinois, something to note is the the sentence, that means that if you cant convince the jury you had a probable cause to have it (which is pretty much an up hill battle from the beginning) you can get imprisonment for two to 10 years and a fine of up to $100,000, FYI
Sec. 19-2. Possession of burglary tools. (720 ILCS 5/19-2)
(a) A person commits the offense of possession of burglary tools
when he possesses any key, tool, instrument, device, or any explosive,
suitable for use in breaking into a building, housetrailer, watercraft,
aircraft, motor vehicle as defined in The Illinois Vehicle Code,
railroad car, or any depository designed for the safekeeping of
property, or any part thereof, with intent to enter any such place and
with intent to commit therein a felony or theft.
(b) Sentence. Possession of burglary tools in violation of this Section is a Class 4 felony. (Source: P. A. 78-255.)

I ran across something tonight that made me think this ladder, it's called the "Liberty Mountain Caving Ladder"
Length 32ft. Weight 3 lbs 4 oz. Width 6", Breaking strength 600 kg(approx 1322 lbs)
Plus you can roll it up, may be bulky but ALOT lighter then the telescopic ladder
Cost seems to be around $150ish if anyones interested in it just google "Liberty Mountain Caving Ladder"

mini-crowbar
bike gloves
small first-aid kit

touque
pencil & paper (for mapping)
L.E.D. Headlamp (small but powerfull)
L.E.D. single bulb (keychain kind)
medium sized Maglite
2 green glowsticks (for emergency)
trail mix, cliff bars
water bottle

| | | | I like your list. I generally try to remember my cell phone (turned off, battery charged) and a compass, though those aren't as as useful when you're underground. Camera of course, extra battery and memory card if needed. I would leave the crowbar home for situations where I'm nervous about police.

| | | | what i used for a manhole key is a piece of rebar that i bent into an S and then twisted it so one side could be a handle an the other hooks in. ive been caught in a drain before, and i just said it was somthing i found, which it does, it just looks like a mangled piece of rebar, or you could just toss it and no one would know the better

Access All Areas recommends a hefty pair of pliers. One handle goes through or under the cover and the other is your lever. Still suspicious, but not as bad as a crowbar I guess. I haven't tried it yet myself.
EDIT - The rebar suggestion came up while I was writing this... Sounds like a great idea!

As for the LED/bulb debate I'd say the LED is generally better, but you won't get the same range. I use both, an LED/halogen combo headlamp, a red LED keychain light and a 1M candle power spotlight. Covers 90% of lighting situations. Once I've modded the 1M with a laser and a strobe it'll be 99.98%.
Honestly though once you've been exploring a while your kit will start to slip. I've done drains in regular shoes, no gloves and a keychain light. <shrug> I'll never forget a Cave Clan expo I showed up to where half the people forgot to bring flashlights.

I dunno.. I think my loadout is easier to carry then most tripods... *shrug* And smokes are very important to remember, makes passing the time when waiting for cars and people to clear out so you can leapfrog to the next area
