| | | Posted by macman5151 So, my questions to you guys are: -What's a good used cheap($200-400) dslr camera? -Anything I should look for, feature-wise, that'd be unusually important to UE? -One of the cheapest ones I'm seeing on eBay right now is the Nikon D100. Looks like a few people have upgraded from that- how is it? |
I've never used a D100, but that's almost ancient in terms of digital photography. Instead, for your price range, I'd recommend a D60. However, if you were willing to up your maximum buying price to around $450, and were willing to be patient, you could probably score a D80 on eBay. That's the route that I took, and I'm quite happy with my purchase. Regardless of what you get, remember to take the cost of lenses into account. This brings me to... Feature-wise, get something that will allow for as much customization, in terms of settings, as possible. Any decent DSLR should be able to do this, so what you should focus on, no pun intended, are your lens choices. Most photographers on this board seem to prefer ultra-wide zooms, ie. 12-24mm. Personally, I'm fine with my 18-70mm zoom, but that's just me.

| | | The D100 sucks, stay away from it. If you want something $400 or less with a lens, go for a new or slightly used D40.

From what I've been told, yes.
go for a new or slightly used D40. |
Yeah, what I'm hearing from friends is one of those two. Design major hanging out in the room right now says the only difference between the two is megapixels. From what I've been told, though, 6 is pretty good for my purposes. Heck, in terms of resolution, the P&S wasn't too bad, so 6'll be fine. So- looking at eBay'd d40's.

It isn't bad advice, but it isn't necessary. Take the Panasonic FZ30 or FZ50 for example. 35-420mm image stabilized lens and stunningly good optics. If you're mostly shooting tripod, its low light performance is fine. It doesn't have replaceable lenses, do you can add an ultra wide lens to it (without degrading the quality), but you could just stitch 2+ images together to get a wideshot. You should be able to find either of these for under $400. You'll never find a DSLR with equivalent lens focal lengths for that price. The D40 is a great little camera. What will get expensive very fast are the lenses.

The lens is decent and when stopped down to about f8 or f11 is extremely sharp. For low light stuff, I'm assuming you're already planning on using a tripod so the longer exposures required by those apertures won't be a problem. You may find 18mm isn't wide-angle enough however, and might want to consider adding a 12-24 or similar eventually.
# UV filter (fits both lenses) -

I may be brave or foolish, but I don't use the filters. I've done too many night photos where streetlights or other bright spots have caused ugly upside-down reflections from the filter to appear in the picture. No thanks.

I assume that you're going to take photos at maximum resolution, so a 1gb card is going to fill up pretty fast. I use a 4gb SanDisk SDHC Extreme III card, but if all you're going to use your camera for are urbex shots, then a 2gb card with a slower write speed would be sufficient. In regard to the UV filter, unless you get something decent (note: It doesn't have to be pro quality), You'd be better off just using the lens hood (another note: don't use a hood on shots taken with a flash), or nothing at all. A cheap filter will likely screw up your photos. If you want to know which filter to get, I asked the same question last month, so just look for my filter thread from June. As for the rest, it's a good place to start. Edit: A further thought: A 1gb card wouldn't be bad to have as a backup, but don't make it your primary card. Not especially impressive, but at least it's better than the Vivitar ViviCam 3935 point & shoot. My mother bought one for me about four years ago. I was appreciative, but my enthusiasm soured when it twice completely drained the batteries after just seven or so shots. I still have it, but haven't used it since then.

Bet it didn't cost the thick end of $600 though! :-p Chris...

Ahh... good to know. but a second battery = 300 Still for a few hundred more, a D 90 is a more pro style camera. Looks like the XP here now with zoom lens (28 - 84 equivalent) is 900.00. The faster fixed 17? (35 equivalent) will be about 260.00. Should be a good street and UE cam, just carry a 12V charger.

150 shots between charges and a second battery is $300? who are they kidding? I can take 1000+ on my D80 before it dies. I wish all cameras did that
