Actually, the 18-55 does have a focus ring, but it's a shitty thin ring at the front of the lens.

Really? The near-invisibility of the ring is probably what prevented me from noticing it, but my 18-70mm came less than a week after the camera and kit lens, so I didn't really need to bother worrying about it.

Too bad I can't swing the new 18-200 VR II...

I'm not sure that you'd want it. I certainly don't. According to the review that I read on dpreview.com, because of its' construction and the fact that it's so heavy, if you have it pointed too far up or down, it'll start zooming under its' own weight, and that the problem will probably get worse the more that you use it.

I'm looking to buy a solid first dslr and lense but wanted some opinions I'm sure this has been asked a thousand times but I don't really want to read through this whole long-ass thread... I'm looking at a Rebel XT because I've heard good things about them. I'm caught in the usual want-a-decent-product-don't-wanna-pay-a-ton problem, would you recommend the rebel? What sort of lens would you suggest? I'd like something that'd be a good general-use UE lense as I'd like to not have to buy too many right off the bat. I'd like something wide angle I guess? I'm trying to keep costs as low as possible without undercutting myself in the long run, I'd like something that I can get a lot of use out of and grow with before I decide I need to upgrade to something better.

Good Canons are great. So are good Nikons. And so are good Sonys and Olympuses. Not much help, I know, but with so many great products, it really just comes down to preference.

I shoot through a Canon Rebel 450D (XSI), which I love. Unlike the XTI and most Nikons (can't speak for the others), it has a Live View function, aka the ability to shoot through the screen in addition to the eyepiece. I rarely ever use this except when UE'ing, as then it affords for some fun angles that might otherwise be either impossible or require slithering through too much oil or toxic waste or feces or whatever.

As for the lens, get something with a good range. Standard wide end is about 24 or 22 mm (I went with 18), and the telephoto end can be anywhere from the 50s to the 100s, depending on price/size/preference/etc. My 18-55 suits me just fine in most situations. You can always get junky off-brand wide-angle extension lens which will double or triple your field of vision, but also maybe fisheye it, vignette it, catch lens flares, blur or wash out the edges, and other imperfect stuff -- most people hate this, others love it.

Price-wise, spend at least a few hundred bucks. More if you can. If you go on eBay you can get great extra stuff, including kits with extra batteries, tripods, huge-capacity memory cards, etc., but it could all be counterfeit Chinese junk. If the camera's the real-deal (refurbished stuff is much cheaper, but be ABSOLUTELY sure it's refurbished by the manufacturer, not just some scam-bag), often times you can get it AND all that stuff for cheaper than just a body and lens at Best Buy.

Also, whatever you do, when dangling that thing in dark, unfamiliar places... always bring protection.

I love my XSI too its not overly expensive for the amount of features and like others have said buying used or refurbished can save you a bunch if you're careful not to purchase junk from ebay. I would check craigslist or classifieds where you can meet up locally and see what your buying in person. As far as the lens the 18-55 kit lens isn't too terrible, but I'm saving up for a 10-22 to be able to go wider. Also the 50mm 1.8 is awesomely priced ($100 USD new) and super sharp if you don't mind being limited to one focal length. It will end up being a mild telephoto on a APS-C sensor. But it can be used on full frame stuff if you up-grade in the future. Best of luck.

Any Rebel T1i users here? I'm thinking of getting one and was wondering what others thought of it. If it makes a difference, I'd be using the stock lens. Thanks =D

I have had my t1i for a few days now. It takes great pics. You will quickly outgrow the stock lens however, I only had mine for a few hours and already wanted a different lens. It is not a bad wider angle lens for the price, but it's not much for zoom either. It is also very loud when you focus. So if you take videos, which is one of the main reasons I got the t1i instead of the xti, the focus is all your hear in the vid. In order to focus the end of the lens also rotates, so if you have a polarized filter on the end you will have to adjust that after it is focused. dpreview.com is where I spent a lot of time reviewing the camera, cameralabs.com is also a good one for side by side reviews of similar priced cameras.

Thanks for the info. I wouldn't be doing much, if any, video with it and mostly manual focus so the noise won't bother me, and neither will the unconventional use of Liveview, I'm a fan of viewfinders. I also read that the stock lens is great for basic use of most types of subjects, so it seems I won't have any complaints =D

Yeah if you are not going to use the video save yourself a couple hundred and get the xsi. If you compare them side by side they are almost Identical except the Video, liveveiw, and 12 vs 15 meg pixel

Hey guys, I'm looking for an upgrade from my Canon S2. I am looking for a camera that is a little more movement friendly. Also, I would like one that is a little less dependent on sunlight (I generally go out near dusk and early morning). Also, maybe a little better overall focus?

I don't really have a price range, but it has to be something that is not to hard to operate compared to the S2.

Ah! that's a lot of confusing ending info right there! but whats the second set of numbers? i.e. the 55 in 18-55

Ha! Sorry. If this explanation gets redundant and pedantic, stop reading immediately! Those numbers describe a given lens' focal lengths (zoomability, if you will) in millimeters. Small number - large number basically means widest angle - narrowest angle. So the smaller the smaller number is, the wider the view is when you're zoomed out; the larger the larger number is, the closer in it is you can zoom.

For UE'ing I hardly zoom in too much on anything. And although 18mm suits me fine in most situations, sometimes my crappy $10 Zeikos wide angle extension (you screw it on the end of your lens), which widens my view as if the lens were about 8mm or less, is fun to play with when shooting a big room or huge tall structure.

Hope that helps, rather than does the opposite.

And to EmilyOnion, if you have no price range, you could get the XSI for its light weight, compactness, ease of use, and durability, and then smack a fancy pants lens on there and be pretty happy.

Ok this is a long thread... but I have a choice between these:

Nikon p90

Nikon D3000

Nikon D5000

Nikon d90

Ok, which one would you choose, and why? I'm looking for the more professional camera, as I shoot a lot of weddings and people.

Of those, D90 plus only f2.8 or faster lenses if you're shooting weddings.

I concur on the camera, but she doesn't absolutely need an f/2.8 lens. I know a professional who shoots with an f/3.5-5.6 18-135mm zoom and an f/1.8 50mm prime and, and she does an awesome job.

Oh, and Happie, you should also get an SB-800 speedlight. It's well worth the money. FYI: You can get them used for between $300 and $350. Make sure to get one that comes with everything that was in the original box, even if the box itself isn't included. You'll need it.

Good tips... Thank you!

And I think I'm going to go for the D90. Unless something cooler comes out before that, that I want to save for.

Alright guys, I'm looking to upgrade my camera. Looking for something for very low light shots for somewhere around $600-$1000. I've been looking at the Canon 50D and a Nikon D90, but they are quite pricey. Any ideas? Thanks!

What kind of camera do you have already, and are lenses included in that amount?

You can buy a used 50d for ~$850, or a used 40d for ~$600 and then hook yourself up with a nice tripod and lens.

You need a tripod and remote timer to pull of longer exposures needed for low light shots.
