The 350D/Rebel XT is a fucking dinosaur. Save up the extra change for a 400D/Rebel XTi instead.

This is true. The only reason I make mention of the XTi vs. the others is the fact that it has a much larger and better LCD than the XT. If you're going to start anywhere, start with the XTi.

| | | | I'd say. I learned on a Rebel T2 when I was a beginner. Like the T2 the XS is a basic consumer level camera. It has a range of modes from simple point and shoot simplicity of full auto, to full manual modes. Just set it to the green square. You'll be fine.

I just recently sold my Rebel and picked up a Canon 50D with a 15-85mm EF-S. This camera is amazing! I've only snapped a 100 or so photos so far and I'm really looking forward to learning what this camera has to offer.

I think I'll be able to pull off better shots with a better body.
Having the cheater mode (Live View) will allow me to get sharper focus up high and at night ... therefore producing better image quality on an overall scale vs
Having the same focusing difficulty with the rebel xt viewfinder and literally taking a shot in the dark that may come out sharper because of the better lens.
And the higher ISO on the T2i or t1i will make shooting long exposures much faster... Instead of metering the proper exposure using f/8 30" ISO 1600 to meter a 4 minute f/8 ISO 100 exposure I can meter for 4" it using ISO 12800.

t1i vs t2i vs 40d vs 50d

Ideally I'd like to buy both the 50D and a TS2 and a Peleng 8mm, sell my sigma 10-20 and Canon midrange lenses and buy a canon 10-22 and canon 17-55L, and 70-200L. But that's a lot of money.
I might end up getting the best bang for the buck DSLR upgrade and then getting the best bang for the buck Panasonic camera too.
I just haven't seen enough good results of the DMC-TS# series yet. 75% of them on flikr or HDR'd to hell and back.

NO... unless you are purchasing a full-frame body, getting the Peleng 8mm f/3.5 is fucking retarded. The Peleng 8mm might be cheap, but it's a fucking circular fisheye.
There is now a MUCH better choice.. the Samyang/Vivitar/Bower/ProOptic/Falcon/Etc. 8mm f/3.5. This one is a full-frame fisheye made specifically for APS-C sensors, which projects an image that covers the entire frame; unlike the Peleng, which projects a circular image.. which leads to an image with the corners cut off with APS-C bodies. It can be found for about $250.

If you want to go with Nikon and that price range get the d5000 instead and it is worth the little extra. Stay away from Sony in my opinion.
