You could look into finding some used Canon EOS or Nikon F body with a nice lens. Slowly start collecting lenses, so if you get a DSLR, you'll already have a good collection of lenses.

The rebel G is a decent camera. Which 80-200 do you i have? The old 2.8 is a great lens.

Honestly I do not know if it is the 2.8; however, the lens does have a rn II on it .

| | | | The Leitz lens would be nice, but it doesn't ever get very wide (35-420mm in 35mm terms). It can't do ISO 50 which means that it'll most likely be noisier than a similar Canon. It can do a maximum of an 8 second exposure. The lens is nice and fast for a P&S (2.8-3.7), but for the money it would probably make more sense to pick up a Powershot S80 - or an S70. You lose a megapixel, but the S70 can still shoot RAW unlike the S80.

I thought about it but I'll tough my D1X a little longer and hopefully get the D2X after christmas if all goes well.
I *need* something big in my hands. I'm used to the D1X size (I've used a D100 for like a year and a half).

I haven't seen any Olympus E-1 mentions!
Personally, I love it. I don't have one but I've used one.
The only cons I've noticed are large RAW file sizes. It's a bit slower than a pro Nikon or Canon, but nothing horrible. I've seriously considered purchasing one.
I think the weatherproofing and magnesium-alloy body would be perfect for UE.
In addition, Olympus is going to be expanding its dSLR product line.
Anyone else have any opinions on the Oly E-1?

Only thing you really gotta check are the shutter actuations and if the camera in question was professionally used by journalists or reporters. They beat their cameras to death.
The main thing you'll see fail on a DLSR is the shutter. You rarely, if ever, see a logic output board fail. However a shutter of a D1/H/X is +/- 200$ which is not bad.

This is complicated.
Yes, slow slide film (ISO 25 - 100 or so) will show very little grain and scan/enlarge very well.
However, negative film - especially at higher sensitivities (ISO 400+) shows much more grain than a recent dslr at the same ISO. Obviously, there's variation from film to film and from dslr to dslr.
I'm presuming that you are referring to 135 film... once you move to medium format, the DSLR no longer has the grain advantage.
My personal experience is with slow 135 slide film and a 6mp dslr. In good light, I prefer the color and highlight characteristics of film, but in more challenging (moving subject, low light) circumstances, the edge goes to digital.
This is something to consider carefully, as UE photography is often very low light.

A friend of mine talked me getting into a Sigma 18-50mm true F2.8 all the way through. That lens is freaking amazing. I say invest in lenses as much as possible.
