nikon verses canon? they both take photos. im gonna be boring and un-nerdly and go "it isnt what camera you got! its what you can do with your lens + body in low light conditions!"

me? i use canon.

Canon Digital Rebel

I was looking at this camera and I noticed that there is the Digital Rebel and then the DR XT. The XT is 8 MP while the regular is 6 MP. Is it worth going for the 8MP? Can someone show me and example of a 6MP and an 8MP picture?

When talking about digital products, I strongly suggest you buy the newest and highest quality you can afford. The Digital Rebel is already pushing 2 years old, yet camera technology has continued to improve steadily.

I bought my Digital Rebel about 8months ago, I wishI'd waited until the XT came out. Since the XT is now almost the same price as the Digital Rebel was when it first released.

Go the XT. If anything, it's got 2 more million mega-pickles which will only make your photos look better. Even if the camera body is a bit smaller than you would like, most of your photos underground (manual exposure) will have to be done using a tripod so you wont be holding it.

That's my 0.02c
Good luck.

The XT is WAY faster then the Rebel too. Start-up is amazing and.....ah hell the whole camera is amazing, lol. It's also got some more features then the Rebel, although some of them can be unlocked on the rebel with a hack.
I got mine three weeks ago now, and I've loved every minute of it.
IMO, forget about the rebel, get the XT.

Forget both, get a Canon 20D. I haven't had a problem with it yet.

I've got a Nikon N70 and I highly recommend it...very reliable, lots of features (both auto and manual focus modes, as well as different priorities and focus locks), lots of accessories to swap out such as flashes, lenses, et cetera. The only reason I'd maybe suggest another camera is because of its self-timer. Maximum shutter speed is 30 seconds, and while there is a self timer, it only allows you to press the button with a shutter delay--still a 30 second max. There's no remote release for indefinite periods on this one, which is kind of a detriment to night photography. Otherwise, really prime basic camera.

"Forget both, get a Canon 20D. I haven't had a problem with it yet."

Yeah, but at more then %50 higher price? You get more choice for ISO(50 and 3200), faster FPS(5 vs 2.8), and faster shutter speed.
I know I couldn't take any better pictures with it, and I really don't think the price is worth the few extra things you get. IMO the best value right now(in the new dslr category) is the XT.

Ah my mistake, it's N75 not N70. Hopefully that makes more sense.

I'll go ahead and say that after having just bought a Canon 300D, I absolutely love it. I have shot before with a friend's Nikon D70, and I didn't notice a huge difference, other than the controls were a bit more clumsy, but then again, I grew up using Canon equipment my whole life. Of course, he's both a Canon guy and a Nikon guy, but the only reason he uses a D70 is because he had a boatload of existing Nikon lenses, so it only made sense for him to go with the D70. Likewise, I had a few Canon lenses, so it only made sense for me to go with Canon.

Unfortunately, the 300D is semi-discontinued, but you can find it used or on Ebay for a decent price, and some of the camera stores will still have them in stock. I bought mine at Ritz for about $1200 with a 3 year warranty, CF cards, extra batteries, etc. I got that warranty because it covers everything from dropping it in water to getting run over by a car. With UE as its main task, that's definitely worth an extra $200. That, and Ritz financed it for 0% interest as long as I pay it off in a year. As far as the new 350DXT goes, I don't like its feel. It feels too light and too compact and the controls were harder to get at with the compact design.

Now, if you get the 300D, you can always download the Undutchables or the Wasia firmware hack and unlock almost all the features of the more expensive Canon 20D, such as mirror lock-up, flash exposure control, 3200 ISO, etc. The main difference between the 300D and the 10D & 20D? Speed & MP count. The rebels are fine for UE because we're not doing sports photography and don't require (usually) the ability to take 5 fps shots. The 300D will do 2.5fps. Also, the start up time of the 300D is slower(2 seconds as opposed to almost instantaneous on the 20D).

Like I said, I love my 300D and it seems to be a pretty durable camera. Ask Servo about his 300D. He's said a few times here that he's literally beat the hell out of that thing and it still works like a charm. I would have to agree. I've taken that thing into areas where the humidity was 98% and you couldn't see 4 feet in front of you and that thing just kept going.

Is the kit lens on the 300D good enough to start with? I've heard mixed things.

it's important to recognize that this is not an accurate conclusion.

2 mp is not a big deal, but it's perceptible in larger prints and eminently useful if you have a habit of cropping photographs.

the XT is also much more compact than the 300D, which is a boon for those with smaller hands and a reason for others to consider a 20D or D70.

most important, however, is the speed increase the XT offers - things like startup time (an almost unbearable 3 seconds on the 300D) and frame rate matter immensely.

as i'm concerned - after the lens swapping option - the speed increase a DSLR offers over a p&s digital represents the best reason to spend more money and lug around a larger camera - and this reasoning renders the 300D a non-option, regardless of firmware shenanigans or a lower price tag.

I would say the kit lens on the 300D/350D is good enough to start. I used it for quite a while as my main lens. Stopped down to f8 or so it can produce very good images. Is it a $1000+ L lens? No. Is it a good lens for the price? Yes.

I would hardly call the 300D a non-option for speed. While the 300D is slow compared to other DSLRs, it's still way faster than almost all P&S cameras. I don't know of any P&S that can burst RAW files at 2.5 fps (even if only 4). The shutter lag is also way better. I did some sports shots for my friend's rugby games with the 300D and never had a problem with the camera being too slow to get the shots I wanted.

You forgot to mention the other big advantage the 300D (and other DSLRs) has over the P&S cameras: sensor size. The big sensor on a DSLR is one of the main reasons the images are so "clean" and have such low noise. I would take the 6 MP 300D over any 7 or 8 MP P&S for image quality.

here's a question I hope no one's asked yet though they undoubtably have. I have no money, ok some but not enough to get something fancy (or new) would it be worth it to by a camera from the local antique store, the one I'm using now is a cheapo borrowed sears brand, all I'm looking for is manual focus and apertures. which the cameras I've been looking at have. Just something to get started with until I can afford a new one.

sooo... any reasons why not to buy used and old cameras ?

Anybody know a good source for the black-bodied Rebel 300D's? I could never again own a silver camera.

I shoot with an old and used camera - it's the only one I have. (Nikon FTn, now around $20-100 on ebay)

The two biggest reasons I can think of not to buy an old camera:
- It might not have a light meter.
- It won't have auto focus.

The FTn has a light meter, but no AF. It can be very tough to quickly draw a perfect focus manually - especially at the huge apertures (shallow depth of fields) you're likely to find on old camera lenses.
