| | | well for the money and the durability i would have to say a pentax spotmatic or even a spotmatic II. there tough as nails as long as youve got that lens cap on. and price wise there next to nothing, if you put it into ebay there around 25 bucks with a 1:1.8, a little while a go one went for $28 with a 1:1.4. ive never had anything but great pictures with the spotmatic, there simple and durable and the only thing that can really go wrong is the battery for the internal light meter either dies or corrodes, and you dont need it since external gauges work just as nice.

| | | I'm thinking about buying a Konica Minolta X60 to replace my older Dimage S414. The X60 powers up in like half a second and has a .08 second time lag between shutter release. That's blazing fast.....

| | | Seems alright to me but you should definitely buy a camera that has a manual mode, unlike the X60. This thing will only be good for snapshots and flash pictures.

| | | That's about all I'd use it for. I rarely used the manual mode on the S414. If I really want to take high quality shots, I have a 35mm SLR with a variety of lenses. I just like keeping the digital camera with me, in case anything cool pops up around the corner.....

| | | I'm really likin' my Canon that I bought a few days ago. I'm having trouble though getting decent indoor shots. I'm at odds about leaving it in Full Auto mode or switching to the Indoor setting. Depending on the availability of light and my distance from the subject either one can work ok.

I wouldn't call the Lumix FZ5 "professional." It's mediocre... for an EVF. I found it to be slow. Pictures look very nice. It's definitely compact -- which isn't always a good thing.

I wouldn't either! That's why I brought up the Oly E-1. I've heard/read stories about people dropping theirs into a sink, or the unfortunate event of their dog urinating all over the camera. The new Nikon D200 has some weatherproofing... and the professional bodies, of course. Personally, weatherproofing is a big selling point for me on a digital camera.

| | | I bought a Canon A520, and it rocked. Unfortunately, I wound up spending almost $500 at Best Buy for the camera, warranty, memory card, tripod and accessories. A month later, the camera broke, and Best Buy refuses to honor my warranty. I brought it to customer service several times, talked to the manager, and eventually threw a shit fit. (This is over several visits in three weeks.) Don't buy anything at Best Buy ever. I have yet to talk to Canon about the problem. I own a Powershot G3, as well as a Canon printer and a few other accessories. I love all the Canon stuff I own, and recommend them to anyone interested, whatever price level you're spending at. But, for Best Buy to tell me to go fuck myself is absurd. Especially this close to Christmas. So. For those of you getting yourselves holiday goodies, if everyone elses warnings aren't enough, I'm another voice telling you to check out http://www.bhphotovideo.com and not a major techno-widget store. Don't learn the hard way. I'm replacing my A520 now, and I'm not sure if I should use some of this extra holiday cash to step up to the A620. I loved my A520 a lot. It was cheap, the LCD was very bright and gave an excellent suggestion of what my shots were going to look like based on the aperture/exposure, it was tiny, had all the manual controls I understand at this point, and allowed for lense attachments. I bought it because I didn't want to bring my G3 exploring with me. I've tried that now, and the G3 sucks for UE. I'm looking at this to help me decide: http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/compare.php, and it seems like the major differences are as follows:
- $175 more expensive.
- 3.1 more meagapixels.
- A loss of F1.6 aperture.
- Slightly larger LCD display that rotates out of the camera. (The only helpful UE feature the G3 has.)
- Larger. Heavier.
- Uses twice as many AA batteries.
I'm going to have to play with them in a store to really help me decide, but I was wondering if anyone has anything to mention about the Powershots in question. If I could afford it, I'd buy a G5. [last edit 12/12/2005 1:41 AM by ian_evil - edited 1 times]

why not keep using the more-than-capable G3 that you already own and save up for a 300D or 350D? used 300D bodies are starting to hit the $500 range on ebay, and the ef-s 18-55 can be had for ~$75... so for 1.5X the cost of an A620, you could go DSLR.

| | | I can't agree more on that. I just found a complete 300D kit at 600$CAN for a friend of mine. It was used but in very good shape. Plus, you can unlock all the options a 10D would have. You should really consider this.

| | | A little off the subject, but before I throw down a few hundred on a new digital camera, I figured I'd ask. My Minolta S414 will not take flash pictures anymore. It will still take pictures, but it shuts itself off after about 2 minutes and the displays says "err". Any ideas????

I have to share the G3 with my family, it's bulky and heavy, the display isn't bright and it uses a Canon battery. It takes great pictures, but I prefer the cheaper, smaller, AA powered, dinky little Powershots. If I'm already stepping up from the A520 to the A620, picking up a used Rebel 350D (the XT right?) for $500-$600 is about three times what I'd pay for the A520. I'll consider it. A Canon DSLR camera for $500 sounds pretty good. I'm checking eBay right now, and prices range from $250 to $900 for just the body. But, I don't know much about lenses. I'll do a bit more research. Is there a better place to check for camera auctions? When I pick up the camera body, what else am I going to need to have it ready to take pictures?

I love my A520 that I bought at Black's Camera Centre. I just went back today 'cause I found the same camera at Futureshop for $20 less and they matched that price and gave me the $20 plus tax back with no problem. I've heard other horror stories about the big box stores thats why I found a reputable camera store and did my business there.

| | | Hey any 6x6 shooters out there? I've been looking around for a 6x6 camera this week and almost decided on a Bronica SQ-Ai. While I can afford a 2nd hand 500 series Hasselblad body, the lens costs are way out of my budget. I figure I'll shoot a roll or two a month, as I'm pretty much addicted to the digital workflow. Combined with the fact I can only scan 35mm at home I doubt the 6x6 would ever become the main workhorse. I'm purchasing mainly for big prints and because I've started to miss using film. I've also given thought to a view camera (I'm dying to use tilt and shift) but thats further down the track (prolly the same time I get an xpan!). HA! I'll be shooting skate/bmx on it as well, so I've the daunting task of locating a fisheye. 1/500s flash sync will be great for daytime stuff as well. Beats the 1/250 of the 1ds. Anyways: blad - too exepensive for my limited needs rollei - same, probably worse Bronica - cheap(ish) and reasonable quality from what I've seen.
