Since I've had enough beer to be slightly argumentative, lemme say that imho, you can still be interested in the artistic side of taking photos without manual focus. As a matter of fact, I would say its very rare you take a picture without at least one part of it being in focus... most autofocus cameras can be coaxed into locking focus on the desired object, then recomposing as desired.

Caput_58

I have a Nikon N80 film and on the SLR's and many higher end digital prosumer cameras, you have the option of locking focus on an object and then recomposing the rest of the photo elsewhere. My N80 also has an option to go into an all manual focus mode and disable the autofocus.

well im graduating next week and i think im going to spend some grad money on a digital camera. I really like to use my slr, kind of a challenge to get good photos. and i like the control. Im looking to spend around 300 bucks on a camera. i really would like to have some control over exposure and shutter time. are there any good cameras in this price range that have this control? any suggestions would be great!

This has come up so often.

Canon A-series or Konica-Minolta DiMAGE Z series.

Just search for all the other threads since the recommendations will be the same.

Another suggestion would be the Fuji S-series; sturdy (I've dropped my S5500 countless times without it breaking), lots of "pro" features, great colours, and the 10x zoom version should be within your price range.

The KMs usually surpass the equally-priced Fujis by having much faster af, clearer photos, longer zoom (12x, 420mm equiv., on the Z3 and Z5), better video, anti-shake, etc.

I like the KM Z-series, but they don't feel or look as well made as the Fuji. Admittedly it has better features, but the lack of image stabiliser has never really bothered me with the Fuji and the AF is fine.

If you are looking to go digital and are willing to put out about 500 I would highly recommend the Sony DSC-T1 it is very small so it isnt a bother and if you are just doing general photography it is amazing. (5.1 Mega pixel)

I have a Canon A95 that I got in December 2004. It's a great little camera and offers manual exposure settings which I regularly use. Coming from fully manual 35mm SLR's and medium format photography I consider it to be a decent camera with enough functionality for me.

Sony DSC-T1

http://www.steves-...04_reviews/t1.html

He asked for something to have control over, the SONY is just a point-and-shoot, it doesn't even have manual focus .

Blech... the T1 is a turd of a camera. Terrible colors, easily blurs, bad vignetting at any f-stop, and worst of all they use Memory Stick Pro Duo, worst format ever...

I could go on.

Go with a Canon A Series, maybe the S series if you can afford it, the S's have a bit wider of a lense and support RAW processing.

^what they said.

I've got a Canon A60 - While it's not the best megapixellage (only 2.0) the A series makes a rather easy to use *and* functional camera. It has a point-and-shoot mode, as well as aperture and shutter priority modes, which gives you enough control to affect your photos, but not so much control that you're twiddling with f-stops for an hour to take three shots.

Is there any way to set UER to not take any more pictures about which digital camera to buy in the $300 pricerange? Like maybe just have it redirect people to one of the dozen or more threads that already exist on this subject?

Since this comes up about once every 3 days, from now on new threads about camera recommendations will be merged into here. Hopefully this will encourage people to read through the existing recommendations instead of posting a brand new shiny thread.

Eventually I'd like to turn this into a FAQ, and if you'd like to help write one please let me know. And if you don't think your particular requirements have been covered by the posts in this thread already, post here instead of making an entirely new thread.

i agree with this statement.

i know people that have amazing cameras that don't know the basic elements of composition. some of my favorite photos i took on an old 3 megapixel olympus.

you can always trade up.

Canon. I like it because it's cuter.
