Meh. I'd be more interested to know if full frame coverage will actually result in a viewfinder that's as large and as bright as a film SLR's.

From the specs it looks like it will be. 0.71 x (at 50 mm) with 96% coverage, so similar to the EOS 3 film body. Only the 1 series have 100% coverage.

So I borrowed my moms camera which was an Optio S and she kept it in an altoids case, when I got my hands on it I convinced her to buy a pelican case for it (which I think spooked her into thinking I was gunna destroy the thing)
So the other day I come home and apparently one of her friends sold her an HP618 which she gave to me so she could steal hers back from me along with it's new badass case.. *shakes fist*
So my question is, is the HP618 a good camera at all? at least for $30?

I was just curios on what peoples opinions were regarding the type of camera to take while in an abandoned building. Right now I have the option of your basic disposable camera, or a Nikon F75 SLR. The pictures from the nikon are definatly better but I am worried that if I take it, it might get confiscated if I get caught.

Does anyone else take cameras of similar calibre on their expeditions? What are the laws in ontario regarding the confiscation of things from a trespasser?

Although the nikon would probably add more credibility when you said you were there for photography...

You're in Ontario?
No need to worry really about the camera getting 'confiscated'.

I'm sure that you'd be carefull with your camera, I'd take the SLR.

I carry Nikon D70 everywhere. It's insured (body only, 1500 euros, ~50 euros per year), so it doesn't matter if it happens to fall or something.

I thought about the photography forum, but I thought that was more about the actual photos themselves, not the gear taken to get them. It can go either way I guess...

In any-case I don't think I'll be taking my nikon any time soon. Perhaps if theres an exceptional beautiful shot, I will go back with my nikon. Its a lot of wear and tear on the camera too.

thanks for that totally helpful reply. </sarcasm>

Well the camera is seriously lacking, but hell for $30 it likes a mobile webcam. The optio S is a nice fun camera and it's a shame you don't have it anymore. But even that HP will take snapshots if thats all your looking for.

Kudos to Minolta for onboard stabilization. From what I have seen in the magazines, looks like a really nice camera.

I was going to buy one - until I discovered Minolta had crippled it by disabling the ability to use my old flashgun (5600HS - which if you have ever seen one, is a BEAST!). Also it would be handy to use my old lenses (which will work perfectly) but it's less than ideal as you need to multiply the length by 1.6 meaning I no longer have a decent wide angle and would need to buy one.

So, if I have to buy everything from scratch, the body, lens and the flashgun: screw 'em - I'll go with Canon instead thanks!

January time (when things tend to get cheaper / january sales money off I'm gonna invest in a 350D!

Yeah, the crop factor does suck for wide angle. I have a 12-24mm F4G which seems to keep things pretty wide on my DSLR bodies. + I have a scale of 1.5 on all my Nikons.

However, the Canon will also have a 1.6X crop, like the Minolta, so meh to that statement.

Only DLSRs that are full frame are the 5D and the Kodak DCS (which are garbage, really). Maybe the new Nikon D200, but nothing is official yet... *crosses fingers*

The Canon 1Ds and 1Ds MKII are also full frame. So with the two Kodak DCS models and the 5D that's five full frame digitals.

Sure, but I can plan for this in my completely fresh purchase of a Canon lens, whereas I'll have to buy a new minolta lens anyways as the widest I have is 35mm - becoming a pretty useless 56mm with that *1.6.

The ability to use my old (very very very GOOD) flash would have been the Minolta's saving grace here - and I would have bought it!!!

But, they ruined it, so Canon it is then!!
