| | | Turbo yeah I see your point. Same thing with Nikon and the D70/D50.. They chose a new system which makes all older flashes COMPLETELY useless, even the "old" SB80DX. Stupid nonsence if you ask me, just want to get people to blow extra cash.

I got in an argument with a Minolta Tech. about it the other day. The tech said "Well, in film cameras what we do is we open the shutter, fire the flash and then a sensor measures the amount of flash bounced OFF the film - when it's exposed the computer kills the flash" Ok "But the problem is, we can't use that anymore because a CCD or CMOS sensor doesn't reflect enough to bounce the flash onto that sensor, so there is no way to meter the incoming flash!" Ok, so I then ask: "And you are telling me - that the CCD or CMOS couldn't meter the incoming flash as it's being exposed?" Then "Uhmmm... eh.... well... that would need a ... eh.. firmware... thing?" So "Basically, you didn't code that function to force me to buy a £300 new flash, right??" I was not impressed, and I used to love Minolta stuff - well, before Konika got involved. Chris...

| | | I've browsed through the 8 pages here, and most of the discussion I've read has been about more expensive digital cameras. I'm more interested in a cheap camera, specifically something with no bells and whistles, that uses exchangeable memory cards, and has half-way decent battery life. (Unlike my brand new Not-UE-Safe cellphone, which craps out in 3 hours.) Any features like upgradeable lenses, the option of a tripod, the ability to take pictures without a flash, or 4+ megapixels are nice (especially the tripod), but I'm not interested in spending more than $300. I'm willing to buy used, online or whatever. A few cameras that seem to fit the bill are: Canon PowerShot A520 Canon PowerShot A510 Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-S90 Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-S60 Fuji FinePix F10 I'm in the process of comparing right now. Anyone who has owned one of the above, that hated it for whatever reason, please let me know.

| | | For that price, look at an A95. Got an A80 - same camera, but 4MP vs 5MP. All around pretty versatile camera. Main limitations I've found are the max 15 second exposure, and the auto-focus can be a pain in the ass sometimes as they all are. This can mostly be worked around, and I shoot film in the rare situations when it won't cut it.

I'm looking at this right here: http://www.dcresou...eviews/compare.php It seems like between the A95 and the A520, I'm better off with the later. Also, is the a recommendation for a trustworthy online store? That's inexpensive? That maybe sells used?

If you can afford it, the A520 hands down, next the A510. The Sonys use memory stick which pretty much only Sony uses. The Fuji's xD cards arn't much better. You don't want to get stuck with propriatary memory cards. Look for cameras that use either Compact Flash or SD cards.

| | | I agree. A520 is the best out of that lineup. (Bangs head on desk) Damn my indecisiveness! I thought I'd have made up my mind by now, especially since I finally have the cash for this purchase. I've read through both of the reviews on these cameras in DP review. These are $660 and $650 respectively on B&H photo (body only). I need advice on possible lenses to get for these cameras, and any extra tidbits or opinions you might have on these two cameras. As I understand it, the Canon's CMOS might give it a boost over the D50. Canon EOS Digital Rebel Nikon D50 Thx. Reb00t.

| | | What is your budget for lenses? For Nikon, the best all around lens is the AFS 18-70mm F3.5-4.5 ED DX. Wide enough for most work (26mm under the 1.5X scale) and has a good zoom. Optics are great; lens produces very sharp smooth images. Othewise, if you really want to go over the top, my suggestion would be an AFS 17-55 f2.8 ED and an AF-S 80-200 F2.8 ED, with VR if possible, but those 2 lenses are 4 times what the camera is worth. For Canon, I have heard nice things about the EF 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 USM but did not use it personally. Only Canon glass I used is EF70-200 F2.8 USM and 16-35 F2.8 all on 1Ds bodies.

| | | I thought this was helpful: http://www.steves-..._reviews/a520.html Thanks. I'm going to buy the A520. My mom has an expensive Canon she doesn't use, and I can stock up on memory cards if I pay her a visit. I also upgraded from a D-Cell flashlight to a AA headlamp. Now I'll only need to carry one set of batteries. Aside from that, it seems to have more than enough features, including expansion options and 4-megapixel pictures, for a $200 camera. Plus, at that price I wont feel stupid running around causing trouble with it. Would it make sense to add a "Digital Camera" tab to the UE Encyclopedia, that would give a couple recommendations at different price brackets (to $300, $300-$900, $900+) for what cameras to buy? And offer a link to this discussion from there? [last edit 10/9/2005 2:11 PM by ian_evil - edited 1 times]

Check if it's CF or SD, which I believe the A520 uses.

I haven't used one, but from the specs and reviews I would say there are better cameras out there in that price range. Pros: - Good lens Cons: - No long exposure - No control of ISO - No higher ISOs - Poor viewfinder, even for an EVF - Uses xD cards

| | | I'm probably going to catch a lot of crap of being a technology dinosaur, but heres my 2 cents. I have a 1980 Pentax MV 35mm SLR which I bought new. It has never failed, and has been to the shop once for a good cleaning. I've got a stack of Minolta K-mount lenses (zoom, tele, fish-eye, etc.) and this camera has been all over the world. It shoots great photos, and has all the manual features so that you can shoot odd photos (long exposure, weird film, whatever). I don't use it much anymore, but it si a real warrior. For digital, I have a several year old Olympus D-510 Zoom. Its just your basic point and shoot system, with only a 3x zoom lens, but thanks to the miracle of Photoshop, I don't really think I need to drop a ton of coin on something fancier. Both of the cameras have survived decent falls, humidity, beach sand, summer heat and terrible cold, and neither one ahs ever let me down. Just FYI.
I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread. |

| | | i got a 35mm but getting the film developed is proving to be expensive,as i type ive got $50 worth of developing to be done with more photos to be taken this week end.and then i gota get them scanned etc, so digital just seems logical to me. my friend takes digital when we go out and i rekon his pic quality in dark and poorly light areas is heaps better than mine,so ive decided to stop usin my 35mm and start savin for digital

sounds like you need: 1: a cable release. 2: a tripod. 3: a handheld light meter. that is all assuming that you have real manual control over your 35mm. film just doesn't have that instant gratification that the digital has. exposure bracketing (and documenting settings for each shot!) is important until you have a good feel for your film / camera of choice.

...and 4: Use decent film. I don't know what film speed or brand awol74 is using, but if it's consumer "bought at the same place I buy my milk" film, and especially if it's fast film, that's a good way to get really mediocre shots, especially if you are shooting longish exposure stuff in dark spaces. Pro film is worth the extra buck or two, seriously.
