get used stuff. I got a digi rebel for 400 bucks only 7 megapixel but its good enough for me... im not too crazy into photography.. well atleast my budget doesnt allow me to be. Plus i guess im old school cuz i think its more important of what your taking pictures of instead of what your using to take them, but everyone got their own style.

Why? Talk to some salesman who just wants to make commission, when I ask the people I trust most about cameras.

Im looking to buy a new camera and want to get my first SLR. I dont know much SLR cameras but as I get more into Photography I want something with changable lenses, plus one that takes good night shots. I read that the Nikon D40 is a good starter. Idealy, I want to keep the price below $800.00. Could someone give me some info on the Nikon d40, or a better SLR to look at purchasing?

I didn't say a salesman, who probabily knows very little, I meant surfing on sites like digital photography review, other review sites, photo.net etc.

This type of vague question of 'Best' always deviates into an either or camp discussion of Nikon vs Canon, film vs. digital...etc.

Also reading a bit before you hit the store will prevent an asshat salesman from selling you something you might not need.

Look at used NIKON d100/d200's or used CANON 10/20/ and now 30d's. Used will save you a bundle and you can put that towards a decent lens.

skip the d100. D80/D200 are way more worth it.

I'm not a fan of image stabilization, but I'd say you pick up some older manual zoom lenses. Nobody seems to want them anymore, and your gonna be manually focusing in the dark and low light situations all the time.

This is just my opinion

1.)For film, and more professional results on common format, use a Canon F-1
2.)For film, and less care for photo composition, use a Canon AE-1
3.)For film, and in a professional medium format, use a Mamiya 645
4.)For Film, and for experimental shots in medium, try finding an AGFA BILLY RECORD

1.)For digital, and entry level photo, use, or rather, try out the Canon Rebel XT
2.)For digital everyday run of the mill stuff and documentation, use any camera with at least 5 MP
3.)For Digital, Extreme Professional Results, Canon EOS 30D

My recommendations///

snapshot/ Fuji F50 (pocket size - very sensitive - Manual - very very fast)

Bridge/ Canon G9 (compact - stunning optical stabilisation (you can take a picture in a street a night without tripod)

SLR/ Nikon d200 (i have one but the optic 18-70 zoom is not sharp) with more money... d300, d3 (with two memory card slot and gps) canon Eos5d

film/ Pentax 67 (very big 6/7 put extremly solid and cheap) Mamiya 7 - hasselblad for people who love 6/6

and this for the rich community of uer... ha ha ha

plus photoshop cs3 and Capture One if you use RAW files...

Other than mega pixels, whats the real difference between a Canon D40, D50, D70, D80 and so on.
