Hi everyone, first post in this thread but I am seeing a lot of good info so far and perhaps the experts can offer me some advice.

I have been using a point-and-shoot Samsung 4MP camera for a few years now and have definitely outgrown it. Looking to build a nice DSLR system with a reliable body and a couple of nice lenses that I will use over the next couple of years. I see the XTi is all the rage right now but I have been seeing some good used XT's and 20D's on craigslist with lots of accessories in the $600-800 range.

Does it really make a difference between 8MP for the XT and 20D and 10MP for the Rebel XTi? I really like the wheel on the 20D and they all use the same lense mounts anyway. Am I just splitting hairs here? Which would you go with and why?

The extra 2 mega pixels of the XTi won't make a big difference unless you are making really big prints. The main advantages of the XTi is the sensor cleaning and the fact it will have a warranty (assuming you buy new).

If you like the controls of the 20D over the XT/XTi then get the 20D. You should however check to see what comes with it to see if a used deal is worth it.

I'm going to be grabbing my first DSLR in a bit of time as well and I'm still completely torn between the D40 (or D40X) and Rebel XT. I have more experience with Canon but I'm completely willing to give Nikon a try if it suits my needs better. The thing that is tipping Canon in my favor so far is the price: the D40X seems to be about $120 more. Either way I'd be grabbing a Sigma 18-200mm for it.

*rubs chin*

Stewie, get a used 20d. A rebel xt is crappy for long night exposures, and a 20d can be had used for $400 if you look around. Spend the rest on a new lens with warranty.

I'm not a fan of Nikon's interface but I might just 'go there' as there as their old lenses are great and cheap (even if manual focus) which is what you'll be doing in low light anyways. If it hasne't already been said AF usually sucks unless your using a pro body camera.

XT's are going for $300 on craigs in Toronto. I still wouldn't get one. I had one and was pretty unsatisfied with it. Go with one a 10,20,30d used and you'll be much happier. They are all close in price now (with a used 30d going for about $700, but it snot much of an improvement over the 20d) which can be had for almost half.

Yea that seems like a good price for it. I keep seeing stores try to sell em for 600$.. and I was going to say for that price you could get a D80.. well somewhere around that.

Looks like both B&H and amazon are running around $530 for the XTI body right now. I'd buy from either. Actually, I just bought a new camera today through B&H... now comes the waiting on the UPS man.

I would recommend http://www.pricegrabber.com if you want to get one right away, or keep an eye on http://www.slickdeals.net. Earlier this month Newegg had the XTI with a kit lens and a 1GB CF card for $605. I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for a deal like that again tho.

just my two cents...save up and get a 30D or 40D instead (the 30D's are really coming down in price now that the 40D is out, and there's not a huge difference).

The 30D's are much better than the Rebel's, worth the extra $400.

oh and...DO NOT BUY FROM A WEBSITE THAT MAKES YOU "CALL TO CONFIRM YOUR ORDER"!!!!! these places are:
1. usually located in New York City
2. they are bait and switchers, they offer a ridiculous low price and try to force you into buying extended warranties, way overpriced accessories, ect. if you don't go along with their shit they will cancel your order. happened to me once, and won't happen again. B&H Photo, Adorama, Ritz Camera are all reputable and I would buy from them.

It looks OK. High ISO performance looks better than it's predecessor. I honestly don't know much about the Sony other that what I read.

http://www.cameral...y_Alpha_DSLR_A200/

I wouldn't get the A300. It has Live View which means you can preview the image on the LCD before you take the picture. This means there's a small delay between you pressing the shutter button and the picture being taken. This also means the sensor is ON more, draining your battery and generating heat that creates image noise.

I guess it depends on your budget and what you want to do with the camera before I can recommend one.

Does anyone know anything about catadioptric lens? I've been trying to find some basic information about them and I'm not getting to great of stuff. Does catadioptric only refer to a lens that takes a 360 degree picture with virtually no distortion, or also to a high zooming lens? I'm getting a little bit of both...

i have been shooting with the canon rebel xti [400D] for about 2 years now, and when i bought it i didn't know as much about photography as i do now. i have learned a majority of what i know in the last few months, by reading a lot and going out in the field a bit more. recently, i purchased a canon 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens with the assumption [after reading nothing but great reviews] my images would be much more clear than they are while using the standard 18-55mm kit lens. that was not the case. after doing some research, i have discovered that i think i am just unhappy with the clarity of my camera. all my photos seem just a little soft, and i can't even remember the last time i took a clear, sharp photo. i have seen comparisons of the rebel xti [400d] and the rebel xt [350d] and the 350d seems to perform better even though it is only a 8mpx body. i am looking at purchasing a new canon camera body, but am still unsure which to get. i would suggest doing a lot of research or possibly renting a body before purchasing one. had i known then what i know now, i may not have bought the xti, however it was a great first SLR purchase...

Since I've become biased... I would offer these words, "YouOnlyLiveOnce" did a comparison between her XTI and mutual friends XTI and neither one of them were clear, or had a clear focus. I've had a Nikon D70 for almost four years now and it has worked almost flawlessly for that entire time! I've literally dropped it, had it fall off the seat of my car, and I still shoot with it on a daily basis. Translation I LOVE IT! That being said those considering going to a DSLR I will say this about Nikon, they have a number of important operational advantages (I think Canon fixed some of these in their pro bodies):
1) Nikon builds two command dials into their cameras, Canon builds one. While it seems like a small thing, think of this when your at a site, possibly in a rush, shooting in manual mode, I have my shutter and my aperture at my finger tips (literally), shooting on an XTI, one has to press a button to access their aperture control.
2) Nikon has a B&W LCD screen next to the shutter release button that you can set your info on, and on the newer Nikon's you can use your main LCD screen for that too. Canon's have one LCD screen for the camera.
3) Personal opinion, but I like Nikon's menu system better, it's bigger, easier to read and set in a hurry. Canon's to me is tough to navigate. I believe that the navigation system on Nikon's are superior to Canon's.
4) While this doesn't matter much, it does say something, Nikon sold more DLSRs than any other company in 2007....

All that being said if your looking for a point and shoot, go Canon or Panasonic!

Nikon's low end cameras have all the same "flaws" you attribute to Canon. The D40/D40X (and I assume the new D60) lack dual command dials and status LCDs. The D50 has a status LCD but no second command dial.

Go up to mid range (D70/D80, 10D/20D/30D/40D) and both Nikon and Canon have dual command dials and status LCDs.

I'm thinking about buying a Nikon D8o,I was wondering if D80 users on here could give me a rundown of their likes and dislikes....I have a D40 right now and really wish there were more compatible lenses and auto bracketing with mine.

When I wrote that post I didn't realize that, but have since come to realize that. It's a shame that Nikon has decided to go the cheap way and not build quality cameras. I don't believe the high end Canons have dual command dial setup, but I could be wrong.

If you have the money I would recommend taking a hard look at the D200. It allows for compatibility with more lenses, and has some damned cool features to boot! That being said the D80 is a great camera! They basically took a D200, changed out the sensor (the D80 is a two channel Sony CMOS VS. a four channel Sony CMOS in the D200) and crammed the D200 into a plastic body. Anyways that's my advice... The D200 has some useful features that don't exist in the D80, but on the same token, if money is a problem I would recommend a D80 with the Nikon 18-200 VR lens. It's a digital lens, but produces clear shots and works well. If you got that lens, you probably would find that you don't need any other lenses.
