Other than mega pixels, whats the real difference between a Canon D40, D50, D70, D80 and so on.

Posted by paragonUE
hokay, heres the shtick, im always first and foremost a film guy. so i plan to head to my local wally world and pick up a DSLR to fool with. that said. nikon 40D or canon XT?

I think you guys might have gotten the brands or models mixed up in the comments there. Nikon made the D50 which was replaced by the D40 and then D40x, which would be the entry levels. The D70 and then later then D80 would be between entry level and semi pro. Wikipedia has a simple breakdown of the cameras with stats and important changes in models http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikon.

As far as the D40 vs XT decision, I went to a store to put both in my hands and my decision was made right there. For me the Nikon was just a little too small for my hands; so it was out of the running. Might be a good way to start your decision process.

Yeah, we're getting closer to $500 total now, but you can get a cheap lens at first just to have some fun with and upgrade later.

They rule. I shoot with a Kodak P880.
It is an advanced PnS that gets DSLR results. Totally manual, it shoots RAW, and it has a bulb setting. The only real difference is that I cannot change my lens but the range is 24mm-170mm so with a range like that I can deff work around that.

All for about 500.00 less than a fancy Rebel.

Anyone who wants more info, feel free to PM me but after almost 3 years, I am still VERY happy with this camera.

Exploring is like tattoos... They stopped being cool in 2005

I'm trying to decide if I should buy a Canon XTi or Nikon D80.. the Nikon seems a little bit better.. thing is; if I decided I wanted to upgrade lenses when I get more money to, I wouldnt want to end up with one thats harder or way more expensive to upgrade..

The Canon XTi comes with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens. However the Nikon I'd more than likely buy doesnt come with a lens at all.. and from looking around even for a 18-55mm its pretty expensive.. (125+$ ..unless used, but I can't seem to find any trustable places to buy used ones). Though I have came across a Tamron Autofocus 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 Aspherical lense for about 50$.. but would that really be worth it?

Canon XTi with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 vs Nikon with 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 aspherical lense.

With that lense is the only way I can put them within the same price range.

If you go the Nikon route, get the 18-70mm F3.5-4.5 DX lens.

The 28-80 sucks. 28mm on a digital is not wide, it's slow and it's really cheap. The 18-70 is a fantastic lens which can be found for as little as 200ish $ new if you look around. It's far superior to the Canon 18-55 in just about every way. Yes, it's a little more expensive, but totally worth it.

Both systems have plenty of lenses available and will always do. I'm a complete nikon slut so of course I'll tell you to get the D80, but the best thing to do is to go down to B&H and try both out. Buy the one you like the most. Both are excellent and you can't really go wrong whichever one you choose.

I've been reading alot about both and asking people anything that comes to mind. I've decided to get the D80, I just seem more attracted towards that with the more I look into it.. Which I'm kinda surprised as I've never really had a Nikon and always seemed to like Canon. Hopefully I'm going to be happy with my decision. I decided to grab a 18-55mm lens (I think, tired, cant remember right off hand atm <.<), then save up and decide on a better lens later.

I'm going to be grabbing my first DSLR in a bit of time as well and I'm still completely torn between the D40 (or D40X) and Rebel XT. I have more experience with Canon but I'm completely willing to give Nikon a try if it suits my needs better. The thing that is tipping Canon in my favor so far is the price: the D40X seems to be about $120 more. Either way I'd be grabbing a Sigma 18-200mm for it.
