And do you like horrible ergonomics? If so, then get the Rebel.

Which is fixed fairly well by getting the battery grip for the camera.

Although you shouldn't have to shell out more money in the first place, to be fair.

When I'm out with friends some of them just stand around and have to wait on us as we're taking picture, so I assume it gets boring for them.
Anyone know of a nice, cheaper, film camera I could get for them to take some of their own pics as they're waiting?
Something that's not too hard to handle, but will work well?

Hell, it sounds like I'm asking a lot

I learned to shoot on a Canon Rebel T2. Simple to use, easy to load. It even knows what ISO the film you put in is. I liked it alot, and they're pretty cheap now. I see them on ebay usually in the $90-150 range.

You can also get a Rebel 2000 for about $50 nowadays.

Or if you want to go REALLY simple

I imagine you had something newer than that in mind, but my family's been using ours since before I was even born, and it still works flawlessly and takes a damn good photo. I highly recommend.

I've got a chance to grab a Canon EOS XS with a 80-200mm and a flash for $35. Would get a smaller lens after.
OR
should i got with a Canon A-1 body for $20, grab a Vivitar Auto Thyristor 2800 Flash for 35 and get a cheap lens?

Hopefully this will be good

Never mind all of that I bought this flash for my D40 at $35!

Vivitar Auto-Thyristor 2800

And then remembered I have a Kodak Brownie Twin 20 sitting at home. Gotta try to get this thing working.

Mine's in no where near that good of condition though

Since the 40D and 50D came up few pages back I figured I would ask. Is it really worth the few extra hundred to get a 50D? I am well aware of both their specs and lack of technical differences so I am really looking for real world experience.

Also with their image output being so similar would it make more sense to save money on the body and get a better lens or let the 50D's mega-pixels woo you as if you were a school girl?

I think if it were me I would go with the 40D and save the money for a better lens collection. I've read several reviews claiming that 50D does worse in some areas than 40D because of the high MP count

Look here
http://www.dprevi...neos50d/page31.asp

Cons Listed on dpreview.com

High ISO performance worse than 40D

Reduced dynamic range in the shadow areas compared to EOS 40D

Per-pixel detail not as good as on good 10 or 12 megapixel cameras

Live view not as accurate as on 40D (framing very slightly off-center, in contrast detect AF mode not possible to magnify right out to the extreme corners)

the big 3 if you want a DSLR camera: if budget is unlimited, the Canon 1D MkIV, if budget is midrange (3-4k) Canon 5D MkII, and if you have about 2K, the Canon 7D. These are the top of the line. "But Pete, why should I spend 1600 to 6000 bucks on a camera?" Two words: weather sealing." another three words: 50 OEM lenses. oh, and lest we forget, AWESOME LOW LIGHT IMAGES. Think about a truly usable 6400 ISO shot. Now I know a lot of Nikon, Sony, and Pentax shooters say 'Hey, what about our camera brands?" Tough s__t. Ive seen some rough shooting environments. I've noticed that canons break last. they will break. but canons are just noticeably stronger. Also, canon had a lot more lenses available. oh yeah, the EF 50mm f1.4 is a great little lens for 400 or so. the EF 50mm f1.8 is a great lens also, for only 90 bucks.

I had too many little annoying electronic "issues" with my Canons. I'm not sure I'd call them broken (honestly, I can't recall the last time I saw a "broken" camera, other than one that was perhaps dropped or run over with a car - I have a friend who did that LOL) but I've never had any of those "issues" with the Nikons I bought to replace them with. I do admit to dropping one of my Nikons down the stairs once but it didn't hurt it.

Yes, it's really fucking funny how Canon NEVER seems to get shit right the first fucking time, and simply covers their ass by releasing multiple firmware updates instead.

Oh really??

I've NEVER had a single problem with a Canon XT or XTI and I take a ridiculous amount of pictures and have for years. I've never updated my firmware either, so I guess they manage to get it right sometimes.

Back when I wasn't too lazy to shoot film, I used a Canon AE-1. The quality of their products is what has kept me as a customer. Personally, I don't use Nikon's because I don't like their feel/look/button placement, etc. I'm sure Nikon makes decent cameras, but I don't plan on switching anytime soon.

-

I want pkrearden's budget. When I upgrade in the not too distant future I will go with either the 50d or the T2I. I'm gonna let 'em come down in price a little first, I've already got all the lenses I need.

I'm talking about those very little details.. like AF issues, video issues, black spots around highlights, banding, 'Err 99', etc. Every time Canon releases a new dSLR, it always seems like there are at least 1-3 firmware updates soon following each body; some however, like the 1D Mk. III, have had many more.

I'm not saying Nikon never releases firmware updates, they've released one update each for around half of their bodies, so far. Most of these updates have been for minor issues such as new memory card and battery compatibility issues.

Speaking of Canon, I have to ask, why is their new top of the line camera, the 1D MkIV, an APS-C, and not a full frame? That doesn't make much sense.

It's actually 'APS-H', which is the 1.3x crop factor (APS-C is 1.5-7x). This format was introduced with the shitty APS film cameras of the mid-late 90s. Canon seems to love this format for some reason, even though NO ONE, not even Canon themself, actually support it by making lenses for this format. In other words, APS-H is an orphan format which should've died along with the APS film cameras.

The only possible advantage to using this format in Canon's pro/sports bodies is the extra "reach" the crop sensor gives you with long lenses.. but that's about it. If they were smart, they would've followed Nikon by going full-frame with their pro/sports bodies. The D3S clearly shows this with its superior (yes, it actually does have a noticeable edge over the 1D Mk. IV in this respect) high ISO performance, due largely in part to the larger sensor (and possibly lower pixel count (you do not need a lot of megapixels for sports, plain and simple)).

Does it also have a quicker frame rate? My understanding is that his body was the sports photography one.

The 1D line has been APS-H for some time now and the 1D series is not necessarily Canon's top of the line camera - it's primarily their sports/action photographer series.
The 1DS and 5D series are more for landscape/portraiture/fine art photography.
The 7D is targeted more at indie filmmakers.
The rest are lower-end consumer/prosumer bodies.
