At that sort of price range, I'd see what's on sale near you, then check out the reviews on dpreview.com.

I've never taken a polaroid camera on a UE expedition, but now I kind of want to. Any recommendations? I have one regular land camera, and one Spectra. Are there any good rules to follow for this? I don't want to do it a lot, because film is so expensive, but I love the look of polaroid film.

I take one on every explore. As for recommendation, it depends what look you're after. The classic B&W, or washed-out, faded color? Galleries under my name have examples of both.

Additionally - and with luck - we'll be getting a few new integral film types over the coming months as well. Neko.

I just purchased my first DSLR the t1i. Comparing it to my friends D40 it is light, almost feels like a toy or cheap. (plastic body vs magnesium) I know canon makes good products so I'm hoping that it is only light and not cheap. Other than that the stats surpass the d40 on almost everything except for shutter speed and continuous shooting... Although I am aware the d40 is in a different class. The time that it takes to focus is defiantly slower also. So far I really like it. I wonder how much I am going to use the video and live view modes and wonder if I would have been better off to get the xti. Oh well it is something good to have I guess regardless if I use it often, however that one time that I really want it will make up for the difference that I spent for it. I have an Extreme III memory card for it. If you don't have at least an ultra(and I'm not even sure if I would waste my money on that) get one. It is so nice flipping through pics and recording time is much better too. It feels like I am using a computer that is about to crash when I use a regular sd card. They are to slow. I just have a kit lens right now. 18-55. Looking to update that soon. Well I am really excited to try out my new camera on some old sites. I live near Detroit and looking to do the train station soon and hopefully hook up with some people on here to visit some other site. Brush Park looks interesting too. As soon as I become a full member I'm sure there are about 100 sites I don't know about near Detroit.

I know absolutely nothing about lenses except that I know I need a new one, something wide-angle? I don't even know what I have, but it's basically a 35-70mm zoomable kit lens that is failing for what I really use it for.

-I need something for urbex.
-I need to be be able to take a shot of a room while standing in that room, not from across the hallway looking into the room.
-In a drain, I need to be in a small junction room and be able to see the sides of the room as well as down the tunnel all in one shot while standing in the room myself.
-I need to stop wanting to take a picture of something, attempt to frame the shot, but then need to walk backwards 20-30 feet first.
-No fisheye...yet anyway

It's gotta fit a standard Nikon mount for a D70 (and potentially a more modern body in the future). I'm open to manual or auto focus, zoomable or non-zoomable. Just as long as it works.

I was hoping that someone might be able to briefly describe the differences in what makes a wide-angle lens a wide-angle lens, what the numbers on the lens actually mean, and some ideas what I might want. I want to suck in lots of peripheral surfaces without too much distortion.

Any ideas/suggestions?
Please keep in mind I'm a total newb at this part.

Thanks.

Which model Land camera do you have? Fuji makes a pack film (FP-100C and FP-100B ) that is compatible with some models. Also, depending on the model, you might have to do a very simple battery hack to use modern batteries in it.

Umm, I don't even know. I'm no where near a lens nazi, so basically anything if it works. I might possibly try to swing it as a Christmas gift. I'm not even sure what prices are like. Is something $150 US or less even possible without major sacrifices?

EDIT: Oh crap! I just Googled some prices. Some Nikkor ones are like $1,500! That's like 4 times the cost of my body. So yes, it does look like I'm going to have to make some sacrifices to make this affordable. I might be able to get up to the $200-250 range. But I don't see myself realistically going higher than that.

For $150 you are going to have trouble finding a lens to fit these needs.

You are looking for an ultrawide. You have a crop sensor camera, so the focal length on any lens you buy is going to have a different full frame/35mm equivalent. Any lens you get is going to be multiplied by the 1.6 crop. If you want something wide enough to get all the sides of a room you will want something at most 18mm or so (~28mm full frame equivalent). I'd recommend looking into the Tokina 12-24mm f/4. Its the cheapest of the ultrawide zooms, and arguably the best overall (behind the Tokina 11-16, which costs a little more). They recently released a second version of it, so you can get the original for under $400 if you look around.

Here is a good comparison of what your best choices are for DX wide lenses:
http://www.kenrock...oms/comparison.htm

I took these last year with the the Tokina wide at 12mm on a Rebel XT

Well I just had my mom use her credit card through my paypal for a Christmas present for me ...

I'm taking photography I next semester and I need a 35mm film camera.
I started reading up on Elan 7s than saw they were horrible until the Elan 7n revision and then found out Elan 7n's go for the same price on ebay as the next model up; after losing about 5 bid wars I decided to Buy it now! a
Canon EOS 3 Body
$180 shipped

When I get some hours and money I'll be getting a

Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens

to go with it and to replace my EF-S 18-55 Rebel XT kit lens.

Plans for MAMUIII are falling apart fast so I may figure the cost of the trip and reinvest that into gear upgrades instead.

Maybe a used 40D or 50D which are =/= same price on ebay as a new Canon T1i.

Or better fall protection / SRT gear for plans I've got in the works now.

Current gear:
Rebel XT, Sigma 10-22mm, EF-S 18-55mm, 50mm f/1.8 mk II, EF 70-210mm f/3.5-4.

Hell, he would notice a difference in width even if he picked up the latest 18-55 kit lens. It is a "good enough" lens if you're not looking to do big print blowups (which, with a D70 you aren't likely)

Thanks for the info. The more I research, this lens thing begins to make a little more sense. I currently only have a 35-70mm, but I'm lacking on shots needing less than 35mm. What about a Nikon kit lens, like a 18-55mm? Even with the crop-factor thing Will was explaining, could this be a potential alternative? I ask because I'm not a fan of changing lenses in hard environments, like a drain, and wouldn't want to use ultra-wide on every shot.

Would a basic 18-55mm allow me to bring in a little more of my surroundings, but still shoot 'normally' without any wide angleness? The 18-55 would now be ultra-wide, but wider than I can currently shoot, correct?

Also, as for prices, I might be thinking about checking out some local pawnshops, as long as I can test shoot in the store and then then check the pics on my laptop to make sure there's no scratches/etc to hopefully allow me to get something more.

HAHA perfect! You replied while I was researching/posting. My thoughts exactly and glad I wasn't the only one thinking it. You now have me excited about the 18-55 kit lens, especially since it was never part of my kit yet. Hopefully it will give me a cheap lens to do what I need, with flexibility. I just spent a whole year on only 35-70mm, so I think 18-55 will give me lots to mess around with. And then if I still need to go ultra-wide, I guess I can take that step.

An 18-55mm won't have the best optical quality, but it will still be way better than what you are using now since you'll be able to get shots that would be impossible with your current kit.

Trent, I bought my 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5 zoom for just under $200 on eBay. I haggled with the seller by using the "Make an Offer" option, which was thankfully available. I ended up getting about $80 off of the "Buy It Now" price. However, if 18mm isn't wide enough for you, go with one of the suggestions above.

Edit: Okay, from the above posts, I guess that 18mm is good enough for you. However, despite its' inexpensiveness, I recommend against the 18-55mm kit lens. My camera came with one (I sold it on eBay a few months ago), and despite having an A/M switch on the side of the lens, there's no manual focus ring, so if the thing won't autofocus for whatever reason, you're out of luck. Oh, and AF is slower and less reliable than on the 18-70mm.

Edit 2: Oh, and to Will, the crop is 1.5 on Nikon's DX format, not 1.6.

Actually, the 18-55 does have a focus ring, but it's a shitty thin ring at the front of the lens.

Edit 2: Oh, and to Will, the crop is 1.5 on Nikon's DX format, not 1.6.

This is correct.

I will say one thing right now.. fuck APS-C! There are plenty of good, affordable full-frame wide options floating about...

Tamron 17-35mm f/2.8-4: Recently discontinued, actually pretty decent on the crop frame. (<$300)

Tamron 19-35mm f/3.5-4.5: Comparable to Nikon's 18-35mm f3.5-4.5, only much cheaper. (<$200)

Tamron 20-40mm f/2.7-3.5: Not as sharp as the Nikon 17-35mm f/2.8, but not bad either. (<$300 (usually significantly lower))

Tokina 20-35mm f/3.5-4.5 (72mm filter, orange ring): Built like a tank (typical for Tokina) and quite decent optically. (<$200)

Sigma also has some options, but Sigma also has very Very VERY BAD quality control (Tamron also has QC issues, but I believe Sigma is worse).. as well as lenses that are just shit to begin with. The only full-frame ultra-wide Sigma I'd look at is the 15-30mm f/3.5-4.5, and only because it's the widest ultra-wide zoom with an aperture ring. (+/-$300)

^^ Interesting.

I've been reading more on Ken Rockwell's site. He seems to like the 18-55 II over the 18-70. Sounds like although the 18-55 II might be a little chintzy in construction, it does take sharp pics and would let me shoot somewhat tight rooms and mid-range distance shots without a lens change. (Dream come true)

Then that'd also set me up nice in the future for a 55-200mm VR to replace my 70-200mm film lens from 1980 along with adding an ultra-wide.

Hopefully that way I wouldn't have much lens overlap and have just what I need.

Too bad I can't swing the new 18-200 VR II...

HAH! There's absolutely NO DIFFERENCE (just saying) between the old and new versions other than a fucking zoom lock at 18mm.. and a $200 difference in price.

Edit: The Nikon 18-200mm is very meh. The best APS-C super-zoom option is probably the Tamron 18-270mm f3.5-6.3 VC. All other options SUCK.
