Ooops.

Meant 300D !

Ah, well that'll change the responses a little! The 300D was a landmark in its time - the first 'affordable' DSLR, and I remember being completely infatuated with it. Well, perhaps infatuated with using a DSLR at all, more to the point.

However, it was completely blown out of the water by the cameras that came after it, and would be at the bottom of the ladder if I was looking around for a second-hand body. I bought a D70 after I'd been using the 300D, and found that a significant improvement. Canon did of course release the 350D shortly after, which evened things up a little.

Sooo... well, the 300D is still a decent camera, despite my moaning. It's just a good thing to be aware that at the time, it was built to be 'cheap', and the main criticisms were its limited features (Canon had its 10D sales to protect!), and its cheap construction.

That sounds overpriced to me. I'd have expected maybe another (cheap) lens for that kind of money. I have a D70 in my cupboard that I never bothered to sell, since they're just not worth much these days.

I'd keep shopping - you won't be missing out on a bargain if you pass this one up.

Got it this afternoon.

D50 *Mint and not even one ding or scratch*
Kalimar Camera bag
2GB Sandisk Card
Kit 18-55 Lens
Nikkor 50mm 1:1.8 D ( Great for close up shots )
Magic Lantern D50 Guide, Great guide BTW !

The original box and all manuals and cables etc. pretty much everything that came with it stock. still had a $799.99 Price tag on it !

Everything is pristine !

For $350 this guy really hooked me up. For some reason he said him and a few others have had no luck lately selling cameras on craigslist. Odd.

So glad to finally have a DSLR and hopefully wont ever pay for developing or film for awhile. Mainly went digital cause all the labs around here cant process for shit !

Next year i am looking at buying a camera and i would like some opinions.

Pentax? Nikon? Canon?

I was looking at getting the best deal for about a grand to a grand and a half.

Cameras in mind:

Pentax K200D (just the body $600 or with standard 18-55mm lens $800, 10.2 MP)
Pentax K20D ($1000 body only, 14.6 MP)
Nikon D80 (body $700 with lens $1200-1400, 10.2 MP)
Canon EOS 40D (just the body $900, 10.2 MP)

Now i can read all the reviews i want, and find all the information i need, however personal experience with the cameras is best. Thats where you lot come in.

I use a camera for mainly traveling, landscapes and exploring therefore exposure length is important to me, and they all have the about the same. Also colour is important to me. I was reading a review and it compared the Nikon D50, D40 and a pentax d100 and the pentax has terrible auto white balance and the photos were dark. So i was wondering if this is true for all pentaxs'.

The pentax D20 is looking really good but i've never heard anyone praise pentax on their DSLR. Also all their manual lenses are compatible.

Maybe you lot can talk to me about lens cost to, and how the three brands compare.

blindly ever onward

Unless you have a compelling reason otherwise, I'd go for either Nikon or Canon. Not that the other brands don't produce some great gear, but Nikon and Canon are just so much easier to source accessories and lenses for, wherever you might be in the world.

There's not much between Nikon and Canon, though - see if you can try out, or at least hold, a few bodies, and see if one suits better than the other. Bear in mind that the cheaper bodies of each brand are much smaller, at present, than the higher-priced ones.

Also im leaning toward nikon a little more because when i tried feeling both the XT Rebel and (Can't remember the name of the Nikon they all look a like to me...) the nikon felt better.Maybe its just me......
P.S - Is it better to get a film camera or go digital?
P.S.S- If i do go film would it be worth it to get a Cannon A-1?

If the Nikon felt better, go for it - there's little difference between the big two brands, really. If one suits your hands better, that's the important thing.

Digital vs film? Digital, definitely. Unless you actually have a specific reason to go film, stick to digital. Easier, more convenient, cheaper in terms of ongoing costs.

Shot with a D40 for a year, looking to upgrade to something else digital. I'm thinking about a D200 but I'm trying to get opinions about the 200 or cameras similar to it that I should consider.

I'd go to the D90 or D300. The D200 is based around a CCD which is a noisier sensor and requires noise reduction for any exposure over on minute or so. I personally have the D300 and love it, but if I were to do it again, I'd go with the D90. It has the same sensor and record HD movies (really cool with a DSLR). The D200/D300 have a better interface, but I don't think it's worth the money.

Like insainly sound said, the D200 is getting long in the tooth, and you'd be better off with the D90 or D300. I love my nice solid D300, with it's great button layout, but the D90 will do the same (or better) job image-wise, for less money, and has basic video features, too.

I wouldn't go for anything less than one of those two bodies, though, or you won't see enough improvement over the D40 for your money.

Okay, I plan on getting a digital SLR at some point soon, especially since my digital point & shoot has stopped accepting rechargeable batteries for some reason, and I already have a pretty good idea what I'd want in that area. However, I'd also like to shoot in film on occasion, as I kind of miss it, and still like the results that I was able to achieve, so my question is, if I were to get a film SLR, what kind should I get, and what lenses should I get for it? I'm open to any brand, as long as I can get quality shots.

I'd work out which digital SLR you plan to get, first, then check out second-hand film bodies to suit. If you stick with Nikon and Canon, you shouldn't have much trouble finding stuff.

Hey guys and gals. I'm rather new to photography and I am looking to upgrade to a Digital SLR camera. My current camera is a nice 10 megapixel digital but it's got a few problems and its just not designed for real photography. So basically, I'm looking for a decent digital SLR that doesn't cost too much (I don't have too much money to spare.). Can anyone make some recommendations?

x-posted from another photography board on this site.

Today I got it into my head that I'd sell my Canon 30D and all its accessories for a Pentax K20D. I know. Pretty crazy, right? Thing is, I rarely shoot digital anymore. The only time I use it is when draining and drains tends to require wide angle lenses. The widest lens I have now is a 24mm which is fairly sharp, but doesn't always cut it when I want to be able to shoot certain features. I'd gladly purchase a wider lens, but I haven't exactly been bowled over by any of the options out there. At least none of the ones I can afford at this point.

So I started to look at what other systems could offer which brought me to Pentax which accepts older lenses and seems to have far more options in terms of wide angle primes and zooms. I'm assuming that one or two of these are of decent enough quality for what I want to do.

I've read through the review on dpreview and everything looks decent enough. I just don't know how well it's going to hold up with exposures which generally last anywhere between thirty seconds to a minute at 100 ISO.

Just wondering if anyone here has any experience with either this model or the K10D. Or are there any other systems that I should be looking into that aren't Canon? I haven't bothered looking into Nikon, mostly because I don't want to end up having to spend more money than whatever I end up getting for the gear I have now. I'm basically looking for a budget system that will give me the best results for this one particular type of photography.
