Are you shooting on a tripod? If so, high-iso isn't really a concern.

Mostly yes, but not always.

I would recommend the Nikon line, then. Their noise performance is excellent these days. I'm not sure what other features you need, but I wouldn't discount the Nikon D5000 if you're looking at the D90. Both are top notch cameras.

Hey, I'm pretty new at this, I am on the verge of buying a Canon Rebel XS Digital SLR 10.1 wanted to get some feedback that I can use in favor of buying it, and maybe reasons against it, can anyone help? thanks.

The D5000 doesn't have an internal focus motor, so that's something to take into consideration.

To Tijmen: I wouldn't exactly call the D90 an entry-level camera. More a photo enthusiast-level camera, really. Regardless, it'd be a good purchase.

Definitely, but as Nikon only makes their new lenses in AF-S, it will be come less and less of a problem.

You can't really buy a bad DSLR, so the only real question is whether you want to spend more money and buy a fancier model. If the budget won't stretch any further, or you're not sure if digital photography will be a long term interest, then just buy it, and you'll have plenty of fun.

Here's a needlessly detailed review!

Well I Can afford to spend $400 and I'm willing to buy it used, what would your suggestion be?

If you can get it for $400 used, I say go for it. I have used an XTi for two years now, and while I do have 2 hot pixels, it's served me well. Start with that, and slowly invest in lenses. Camera will get outdated, but the lenses will outlive it by a long shot.

I bought a XS a couple of months ago as my first dslr, and it works really well so far!

That's the camera I have. I got it not long ago, and so far, I love it. It takes some getting used to, though, as far as the settings go. I actually had to read the instruction manual. You have to buy a separate remote shutter button for it, like it's not compatible with ones you use for regular SLRs, something I was slightly disappointed about. And it is NOT compatible with the wireless one (learned this the hard way). But other than that it's fantastic. I'd def say go for it.

The Ebay Store of Second Rotation (http://www.gazelle.com/) is where I bought mine from.

http://shop.ebay.c...sZ1QQ_fromZQQ_ipgZ

The list Canon Digital Rebel XT Kits for ~$330 and free shipping.

Just another note. The Rebel XT uses compactflash cards (not SD) so you will need to buy one of those. You will want a tripod. I got mine from Ritzcamera for ~40. and a camera bag. Easily doable for <$400.

Then you should upgrade your lenses when you can afford too and probably a timer too

edit* Gazelle store sells used camera equipment. Where are you in NY? you should check out b&h photo vidoe's store in NYC if you are close by.

I just bought a Nikon D700 camera. When my son DJ Craig (UER member) took off with my D100 I was forced to buy a replacement! Now he wants my D700!! I hope you will forgive me if I rave about this camera but first I must say I was shocked by its weight when it arrived as an on-line order. It is very heavy and that could be the biggest issue for exploring.

And of course the price is staggering. You can get it cheaper on the grey market. Supposed to be the same camera but not imported through Nikon and therefore not covered by Nikon warrantee. Instead most importers provide their own warrantee insurance, for what it is worth.

Most digital cameras have a light sensor that is 1.5 times smaller than standard 35 mm film. They call it DX. The D700 is called full format 35 mm or FX (not to be confused with huge full format glass plate cameras still used by at least one explorer wanting incredible resolution).

Although the sensor issue has been mentioned before I think it worth reinforcing the fact that lenses made specifically for the DX cameras cannot be used on the newer FX cameras (unless you switch from 12 megapixel FX to about 6 MP DX cropped mode). You can use lenses made for 35 mm film on the FX cameras. The advantage of DX lenses is that they are lighter and cheaper and often have a wide zoom range. The advantage of FX is that there is a bigger area for capturing light so the ISO rating can go up to an incredible 6400 ASA!

The D700 also has a CMOS chip instead of the older CCD chip I had in my D100. This produces great color even in low light and I love the effect.

If you use a flash like the SB800 or even the built-in flash the programs for calculating exposure do a great job. Much superior to the D100.

UER photography inspired me to buy a 16 mm rectangular Fish eye lens for it. It is relatively small and light but very expensive too. The 'standard lens' is a pretty good wide angle zoom 24-120 mm with vibration reduction which is equivalent to adding a stop to the speed of the lens (like going to 12,800 ISO).

Keep in mind that you do not have to multiply these focal length numbers by 1.5, so 24 mm is the same as 16 mm on a DX camera. I also have an older 70-300 mm zoom that doesn't get a lot of use except for macro. Thats one thing I really miss. The D100 had a macro 17-105 mm lens and that was great for close-ups and I couldn't find any equivalent lens for the FX format.

Previous posts have discussed the preference for manual over automatic focus. This depends on the characteristics of the camera and user. I agree that autofocus can do just as well if not better than manual. I am at the age where I have to wear glasses and without the old split image screen in the newer SLRs manual focus is difficult to use, especially in low light. But my son uses the same cameras and cannot understand why I don't like using manual focus. Its a personal preference and there is no right answer.

First of all, congrats on the D700! Its truly a wonderful camera and I'm sure you'll love it. You've jumped ahead about three generations over the D100.

Even heavier, I believe, is the D3.

I thought long and hard about getting a full-frame digital, but eventually decided I like the 1.5 multiplier with my long lenses; for example, my 80-200/2.8 is like having a 300/2.8 - a lens I lusted over for a long time when I was using my N90S. So if I eventually grow weary of my D80 (or decide I need the CMOS sensor) I'll probably go with the D300.

I use manual focus only when I can't otherwise get my zoom lens to cooperate.

Ok, so how 'bout some advice. I'm a complete noob when it comes to photography. Never used anything but point and shooters. It seems like everyone* I know is into it, but until I got into UE I never had anything I really felt like recording.

Anyway, my lack of experience means I don't know too much what to get. I've been researching all day, reading up on the basics of photography, and surveying my friends. I know I want something incredibly cheap so I can upgrade /after/ I know what I'm doing. I know I want digital. I've been told I want SLR.

So, my questions to you guys are:
-What's a good used cheap($200-400) dslr camera?
-Anything I should look for, feature-wise, that'd be unusually important to UE?
-One of the cheapest ones I'm seeing on eBay right now is the Nikon D100. Looks like a few people have upgraded from that- how is it?

*Not sure what it is with software engineers and photography, but every other one I know has an $800+ camera.
