Micro, have you thought about the Canon 17-40/4L, which is decent, and would avoid the cost of switching brands? Even if you were planning to find a 'cheap' manual prime on another system, would the cost of switching bodies compare?

Granted, 17mm on crop might not be spectacularly wide, but is there really a wider option that isn't super-pricey, or a not-so-sharp ultrawide zoom? I presume that any older lens that serves as a wide angle on a budget (crop) digital of any system is going to have to have been an exotic ultrawide in its day...

Anyway, a review of the 17-40: http://www.the-dig...M-Lens-Review.aspx

Switching systems shouldn't cost me anything. I have enough Canon gear to sell to ensure that won't happen. I might as well sell the body now while I can still get some decent coin for it.

As for the 17-40L, I'd like something wider than that which only leaves a handful of lenses which seem less than ideal. Anything between 24-40mm would just be wasted anyway. No point in paying for (and lugging around) focal length I'll never use.

I haven't read reviews of all the wides for Pentax, but there do seem to be at least a couple that are both good quality and affordable. I haven't looked into any of the older ones yet, but I'd mostly be interested in the fish-eye options.

The Pentax is also weather sealed and has a wireless remote option, both of which tend to come in handy for underground photography and are things my 30D (or even the 50D) lacks.

2 Cents:

The Canon 40d is reduced in price right now because the 50d just came out. Awesome camera for the price (less than $1k).

If you want landscape, I can attest that the 17-40 L lens is awesome. And it's half the price of the newer 16-35.

I also have the 70-200 L IS USM and it has given me the reach I want for sports, fast action stuff, and when i want to get close. Good for candid shots in groups too. Tack sharp.

Here's a sample of an old gun battery in SF with the 17-40 last week.

Hope that helps.

Hey guys and gals. I'm rather new to photography and I am looking to upgrade to a Digital SLR camera. My current camera is a nice 10 megapixel digital but it's got a few problems and its just not designed for real photography. So basically, I'm looking for a decent digital SLR that doesn't cost too much (I don't have too much money to spare.). Can anyone make some recommendations?

Well, it would help to know exactly where your budget is, but if you're not looking to spend too much, I'd recommend the Nikon D40x or the Canon Digital Rebel XSi. They're not at the very bottom of the ladder in price or quality for those brands, but close. I've seen the D40x with the kit lens on eBay for a very reasonable price, one source being Cameta Camera's store on there.

I don't know if I'd call some cameras "budget" cameras just because they're not full frame, such as the Nikon D300. If that's "budget" for you, then I want your salary.

I meant that any budget model would be a crop model, not that crop models were necessarily budget models

Okay, I received enough cash yesterday for my birthday that, using it in combination with a bit of money that I already have, I could comfortably purchase a Nikon D60 w/kit lens outright, whenever I want. I could go on eBay right now and hit "Buy It Now", and one of them would be mine. However, now that I have this money, I've been wondering if I should hold out and save up for a Nikon D90 w/ kit lens. Here's how it stacks up on the financial end:

D60: $100 or so short, can be made up immediately with money already available
D90: $700-$800 short, unless I can get an outstanding deal, would have to save up for at least a few months

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Do you plan on getting a D60 'body only' or with a lens or two?

Nevermind, misread prior post.

You're better off getting a D80 and an 18-70mm f3.5-4.5 for a very similar price. The D80 has more features than the D60 (sensor cleaning isn't a big deal) and the 18-70 is much better than the crappy kit lens.

Get the D60 and save the money for lenses or something.

I'd recommend the Nikon D40x or the Canon Digital Rebel XSi.

The XSi is trash IMO. Most if not all of the people I know who've either owned an XSi or borrowed one say that the XTi wins by far. It feels cheapy, plastic-y, and the justification for spending the money on 2 more megapixels doesn't make sense.

You can get the same pics out of both with virtually no difference in image quality, unless you're planning on making posters of your work. Since the XTi's are an "obsolete" model you'll save yourself a couple of hundred bucks to boot, new or used.

Oh, and don't be duped by the 18-55mm IS kit lens either. IS in that mm range is pretty pointless.

Or you could go with a 20D and save even more. Just make sure you invest in a decent lens...

I got a D60 a couple of months ago and I am very happy with it. I just got the 55-200mm and am playing with that now.

I still dont know enough about the workings of my camera yet but one thing that is kinda shitty is that when you take long exposure shots, after the shots complete it takes the camera a while (20 sec maybe) to ready itself for the next job. But besides that it freaking rocks.

That's called Long Exposure Noise Reduction, and you can turn it off! It takes as long as the original exposure.

With exposures up to about 6 seconds, it's pretty much instant.

Hi everybody,

we are planning to buy a new cam (including an objective). We can invest around 500 Euro, not much more..
We are thinking about the Canon EOS 450d or maybe a Nikon...
there are a lot but we are not really sure. we are urbex photographers (of course) and shoot both indoor and outdoor...

What do you think?
do you have a similar cam and can you recommend some?

Do you have photos made with this cam?

it would be really GREAT, if you can tell me what you think and maybe you can show me pictures of the cam you prefer!

greetings to all of you from Berlin

Ok im reading and reading trying to avoid a question, but I just cant help it! Aim for something in the same price range please, or maybe a little higher if you can provide some REALLY good justification.

Sony A300 (kit 18-70 lens) or
Canon XS(i) 18-55 IS lens.
(or whatever equivalent Nikon)

I know the IS does not matter for 18-55. I have also read that live view is bad for generating heat and adding noise, but I expect most of the time it will be turned off except when I feel like using the tilt LCD (which I'm confident will eventually break, as anything with a flexible LCD connector cable does, but like I said I won't be using it much). I read the Sony live view sensor is actually in the viewfinder so does not require the delay of moving the CCD in and out like other (canon, etc) models.

So... what gets my attention is that the Sony has IS in the body, so I could in theory go with a cheaper non-is telephoto down the road, right? Are both kit lenses with these bodies POS, and worth buying a better one separately?

Major concerns:
- decent upgrade lenses that I can convince the wife are not too expensive down the road
- biggest purchase reason is to take pics of upcoming new baby (in 4 months). Would not consider SLR otherwise.
- plan to take up casual UE and really love the artistic pics on this site, but never plan to become a real competitor in this area with you guys
- enjoy occasionally taking nature shots and would like telephoto for that down the road

Oh yeah, and I'm really not liking the idea of buying Sony since I hate the company, but my last point and shoot was a cybershot which I was pretty happy with for years, and I will choose what is best for me and go with them if I must.

sorry this was so long...

I was thinking of buying the sony Alpha 300? DSLR but the man I talked to told me that Sony is very proprietary with their lenses and not alot of local distributors carry any kind of selection if any at all. The kit lens that came with the camera was kind of crazy too. It came with a 75-300MM! Yeah its a hell of a focal range but damn what if your not looking to take pictures of birds! Lol

Thank you for pointing that out, that is a good point in terms of accessories, though Henry's camera shops are numerous in my area and they price match to any store.

I have been doing some perusing of ebay and it seems like there are some excellent affordable Minolta lens options. I realize these are used and probably not the best by modern standards, but would be much easier to validate to the wife and a good photography starting point, wouldn't you say? I tried to find equivalent options from Sigma but the price difference is very substantial (assuming I chose a Canon Rebel).

so far I seem to be deciding based on being able to buy affordable lenses after the kit lens. which of these would be better for low light UE (no draining):
Nikon:
Nikon AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8 Lens ~$150
Sigma AF DC 30/1.4 EX Wide Angle (is it worth saving for this one if my first low light choice is poor?) ~$500

Sony:
MINOLTA AF MAXXUM 50mm f1.7 ~$100
Sigma AF DC 30 /1.4 EX ~$500 (worth saving for?)

Canon... I just can't seem to find an affordable low light lens, but maybe it's not worth going cheap? are there good UE options from 3-$500?

Another good one is the Sigma 28mm f1.8. Unlike the 30mm f1.4, it can be used on full-frame cameras if one were to make the switch in the future.

Cameras around $200-300 with 15+ second exposures

I absolutely loved my Canon Powershot A710 IS. It was a 7.1MP with 6x Optical Zoom, and I could do up to a 15 second exposure.

And I broke it...

So I'm looking at cameras again, and have noticed that it seems the only cameras that have a 15 second exposure without spending hundreds more are the Canon Powershot units.

If anyone can at least recommend a camera or camera line that's typically under $300 and has at least a 15 second exposure, I'd appreciate it!

Thanks!

You might want to have a look at the CHDK project, which provides a means of dragging more functionality out of Canon compact cameras, including longer exposure times. Only some specific models are supported, so it would be worth giving this a look before you go buying anything, to see if it's something you'd be interested in.

A link:

Enjoy!
