| | | Alright, this will be the thread where I will be posting server news as it happens. Thanks to all your awesome donations, we've totalled $1796.27. That works out to about $2,100.81 Canadian Dollars, according to XE.com. I've got a quote here from a Sun Gold Partner that a friend highly recommends for a brand new Sun X2100 M2 x64 AMD Opteron dual-core 1214 server -- 2gb of ram, 1U case, it's a beautiful machine. It costs (with a DVD drive) $1997.26 CAD. Adding in tax, that's $2,276.88. But it doesn't come with hard drives, so I will be buying those... a nice 250gb is $102.99 x 2 for mirror raid = $205.98 plus tax = $234.82. Then there's the first and last month's hosting at the new datacenter, that's $200 CAD plus tax, $228. So, payable now will be $2739.70. Subtract the donations, and we're at $638.89 that I will be paying out of my own pocket. To all those UER-detractors who have accused me of pocketing the money that was received over $1500, perhaps you'd like to trade websites. As you can see, even with the unexpected $300 over the target, I'm still gonna be $650 in the hole personally. Would you really pay even $650 for your own websites? Oh, and to those uninformed would-be techies who really think UER would run on a $30/month "Developer Hosting" or whatever account, you've got another think coming. UER has on average 200 people browsing (100 real people, 100 search bots) at any given time. We crank through upwards of 300 gb of data transfer in a month. UER's MySQL database is 1.7gb in size, and the server we use has a load of custom extensions and plugins installed to make UER so much more awesome. UER needs it's own server, whether renting or buying. This sort of shit doesn't run on shared hosting. -av

| | | Oh, by the way, I'm not asking for more donations -- I'm merely pointing out that I'm contributing more money than anyone else, because I've been accused of not contributing at all, or of pocketing the proceeds. Yeah, right! UER is a huge money-losing venture for me. But it's worth it.

| | | Av just bitch slapped everyone who was complaining! I am sure if you keep open the donation page more of us will donate for the first time or donate again. This especially includes if your still giving the rad led light. Can you get more than one if you donate more than $15 twice?

| | | Anyone who donated more than $15 will get multiple lights: $15+ - 1 light $30+ - 2 lights $45+ - 3 lights $60+ - 4 lights $75+ - 5 lights $90+ - 6 lights etc The value of the donation will be counted based on intended donation and not final value -- so if you donated $100, it'll count as $100, even though (thanks to paypal) I only got $96 of that money. In my calculations above I didn't count in the cost of the lights and the mailing, and of course none of those calculations take into account my personal time and any missed work due to spending my time working on UER. It's just more to take out of my own pocket. In postage alone, mailing one light to a US address will cost at least $1. So, factor that in to your calculations Any donations made from now on will still be appreciated, and will offset the $650 I have to pay. Either that, or they will go towards the next month of colo hosting or the current month of 1&1 hosting -- we're still on 1&1. -av

| | | Maybe it's just me, but I'd rather build the server myself. It would save a lot of money, and it really doesn't take that long. I've done a bit of work for people and it always comes out cheaper designing my own then buying pre-built things. Heck and depending what operating system you want to run (windows server I presume?) I might be able to even help you out. I have a key for Windows Server 2003 Standard and Enterprise, both legal and not being used (Due to my major of IT I am given free software). Just an idea and an offer.

| | | Building my own server would mean sourcing a 1U case, a 1U power supply, the appropriate 1U racks and motherboards and cards, etc. I don't expect that stuff to be cheap. Also, there would be no warranty. With the Sun box, I get a 3-year next-business-day warranty. The Sun box also comes with an amazing Lights Out module that lets you reboot the box, KVM with it, etc all over the net without touching the box, even when it is switched off! I really doubt you would be able to match the specs I'm getting (including warranty ) with a home-built box. Maybe if it was in a tower case, but I'm talking rackmount 1U here. -av

| | | I wouldn't do AMD either. That's a whole issue of itself. Honestly, I switch it over to php and go to linux, but that is my opinion.

| | | Yeah, but UER isn't PHP, and none of the other utilities that UER uses in the back-end work on Linux. Plus, I actually know how to configure Win2003; I have no idea how to configure linux. The Opterons also beat out the Xeons in all benchmarks. -av

Maybe back in 2005 and early '06. But now the xeon's are blowing the opterons out of the water while consuming less power.

If you can give me a quote for a better server than what I have chosen for the same (or less) money, please let me know. -av [last edit 2/20/2007 10:36 PM by Avatar-X - edited 1 times]

This is true. I honestly don't think I could afford that though. Maybe in, oh, say another 10 years.
