And six years ago people were still running NT Server 4.0.

Six years ago my blackberry didn't have a phone.

Six years ago I still had a pager.

Times change.

And today, people are still running NT Server 4.0.

Today, my phone plays MP3's just like my phone 6 years ago did.

Today, I still have a pager.

4) The ILOM stuff on the Suns is indeed really cool. If I remember right, the X2100's have the fancy web-based stuff. Whoever is suggesting a Dell with a remote management card has not dealt with Dell's remote management vs. Sun's ILOM. ILOM is so much nicer to deal with.

I admit that I have not used the X2100's ILOM so I can't say how it compares to Dell Remote Access, but everything you describe the Dell has. The current DRACs are all web based with full remote console support. It also does remote media access (use your workstaion's CDROM/USB drive as if it were local), which is very useful. Seems like the two are identical feature wise.

My reliability anecdote: The SUNs we have failed more then the Dells (twice vs never) and we have more Dells. On the flip side the SUNs are older. The HP/Compaqs we have are garbage and fail frequently.

Well, it is a new server, so I think any power issues will have been fixed.

I've actually ordered one for work already, so I'll play around with that one a bit first before I order it for UER.

I do of course realize that RAID is no all-out data solution. UER's complete database and site contents is copied to my local network every 24 hours. Not only is it off-site backup, but it's right on my home server, so I have direct access and don't have to try to get it off another machine later.

Yeah, I didn't want to chime in, since the last SUN servers I dealt with were about 6 years ago, but as an example at one company, I had about 30 Dell servers and 2 SUN servers. About half of the support issues we had were with the SUN servers. Power failures, RAM, and mobo replacements. They did it quick, but it seemed excessive.

I should be clear here.
The x2100 is pretty much the bottom end of Sun's entry-level servers. Any comments about reliability that have been observed pertain only to the x2100. We have many other Sun servers at work that are incredibly reliable - other than the annoying power supply failure issue with the Sunfire v210.
The big brother of the x2100, the x4100 is the bee's knees. We have a bunch of those too. They just sit there and run and run and run and they are also ridiculously fast.
Also, as I said, the majority of our x2100's were purchased very shortly after they came out. It is likely that they have hammered out whatever problems existed/exist with ours. That is precisely why I said "check to make sure they're better now" and not "The x2100 is CRAP!"
Dell's server product is decent. I don't hate it completely. Big problem with Dell, if you're trying to run any setup with real standards is that they have a tendency to switch certain components at a moment's notice without telling you. Their server line is more stable than their desktop line, but when you're dealing with hundreds of systems, it's a nice feeling to know exactly what you're going to find when you open the lid.

I wouldn't listen to anyone with Dell. Yes their lines are different with business and home, but I've had non-stop problems with both. My home laptops came without screws in the lcd panel, harddrive and who knows where else. It took a few months to get it replaced because of a screw up. Now the business laptops have had issues crashing and just problems in general. I tend to stray away from them and refuse to recommend them anymore.

I used to have a Dell XPS M170, and there was no end to the problems with it. I had to send it back probably ten times, and it usually wasn't fixed the first time. The XPS line is not definitively the cheap line. Also, I felt like the people whom I spoke to usually didn't know what they were talking about.

XPS is a continuation of the dimension line, high end home machine, not a business machine so not built to the standards of the business machines of dell. I wouldnt touch an XPS with a ten foot pole

What about a 3.3 meter pole?

My experience with Dell on both product lines is that its a 50% chance of good or bad and that drives me nuts.

Yea and I spent days arguing with them to get things shipped out. After more than $10,000 of things we've bought through them, we still get crappy service.

Well I don't know who you're not blowin, but I loved 'em.

And yeah, I really like the Dell laptop guts. They are extrememly easy to strip and rebuild. When the company downsized, I would take all of the laptops apart and build the best possible configs out of the pieces.

I ended up with 2 inspirons at one point and did the same with them, rebuilding them both from time to time for various needs (why buy a print server when you can use an old inspiron in the laundry room?)

My old things, considering at least 6+ years ago, work great. I don't like the home products anymore. Both Inspiron's I have from them have been trouble, as well as the monitors we've bought. I think they have my name flagged so when I order the send out the worst product possibly available...
or every company does because no matter what I do, I must do it twice. Heck I can't even buy vcr tapes without them being broken the first time..I'm bad luck :\

RAID 1 is two drives. You could do RAID 5 (but I dont know too much about RAID 5 to comment on its reliability, I do know it is slower though. Something to do with the striping), You could do a Mirror of a Mirror (I think). 4 HDDs, 2 RAID 1 Mirrors, inside of a Mirror, RAID 1+1.

RAID 5 is actually faster as it is striped and mirrored. A striped array will almost always be faster. RAID 5 is a very nice balance between speed and data security. Unfortunately, it requires a minimum of 4 drives which is not possible on the servers av is looking at.

RAID 5

3 drives; one for parity. The more the faster it is, but time is consumed writing parity info. A 64 bit PCI slot and a good RAID card are needed for best speed.

No. It's striped with parity.

Slower to write, and faster to read.

Ah, I forgot about the writing things, but seriously, I think UER does a lot more reading than writing. As for the 64 bit PCI slot and a good (hardware) RAID card, that's an obvious necessity.

I meant that the parity was practically a mirror of the striped set.

All the HDs have parity info on them; you loss one HD worth of capacity in the volume for the parity on a traditional RAID5. You need minimum three HDs but the more you have , the faster it reads and writes. An eight disks RAID5 array is no slug.

Yeah, I have root access to a network with a .5 tb raid 5 array and a 2 tb raid 5 array, both write faster than shit, and make monthly ghosting a breeze. The .5tb array is ten raptors, so it just screams. I can't remember how many drives are in the 2tb array, I want to say eight, but it's running on the faster server so it's just about as fast.
