Yeah, I didn't want to chime in, since the last SUN servers I dealt with were about 6 years ago, but as an example at one company, I had about 30 Dell servers and 2 SUN servers. About half of the support issues we had were with the SUN servers. Power failures, RAM, and mobo replacements. They did it quick, but it seemed excessive.

I should be clear here. The x2100 is pretty much the bottom end of Sun's entry-level servers. Any comments about reliability that have been observed pertain only to the x2100. We have many other Sun servers at work that are incredibly reliable - other than the annoying power supply failure issue with the Sunfire v210. The big brother of the x2100, the x4100 is the bee's knees. We have a bunch of those too. They just sit there and run and run and run and they are also ridiculously fast. Also, as I said, the majority of our x2100's were purchased very shortly after they came out. It is likely that they have hammered out whatever problems existed/exist with ours. That is precisely why I said "check to make sure they're better now" and not "The x2100 is CRAP!" Dell's server product is decent. I don't hate it completely. Big problem with Dell, if you're trying to run any setup with real standards is that they have a tendency to switch certain components at a moment's notice without telling you. Their server line is more stable than their desktop line, but when you're dealing with hundreds of systems, it's a nice feeling to know exactly what you're going to find when you open the lid.
