Please explain to me how you expect this to work?
UER uses the following windows-only technologies:
- ASP (are you volunteering to convert 5 years of programming to PHP?)
- Various Active-X component DLLs for uploading, file converting, etc
- Custom server applications for AvChat, message watch, etc
- My preferred email server software not available on linux
- My backup software doesn't work on linux
I am not an experienced Linux admin. If we upgraded to linux, the site would be hacked within an hour.
Take your pick.

I don't care whether or not the OS can be changed down the road. Neither does Av, the Admin. He's stated that over and over again, and yet the debate continues.
I appreciate the fact that Av asked his users for input, that's really cool of him. He didn't have to do it. It's his site, and his hardware.
As a business domain admin, I don't give my users an option. I don't ask them their opinion on hardware we should be running, or what OS our servers should run. I don't even give them an option regarding their personal workstations. Around here, it's "like it or lump it." That's what administrators do, they administrate, and keep things running.
A user needs to know about only one thing: uptime. If it works, shut up.
As a user of UER, I don't care about infrastructure at all, outside of professional curiosity. As long as the site is up, I'm happy. Other users should feel the same way. If it was your job to keep UER up and running, and all of it's users happy (for no pay, I might add) then you might have a call in the matter. Unless your username is Avatar-X, and you have a little blue administrator star in your profile, it's really not your call.

This is the internet. People are annoying. Get used to it. Everyone has their own opinion, and they can express it. If Av wanted to delete all of the annoying comments, he could, but that would just stifle the community and piss people off and that isn't what he wants.
So, yes, people bitch and moan and express their opinion, and that makes them happy. And you telling them that they should be happy is kinda douchey.

exactly, I decide what a customer of mine runs depending on what he pays me. One place i run is still using NT4 on his back end. its on his print server and file server. Does he really see a difference between it an win2k3? NO. all he cares is that its working when he comes in in the morning. Every OS has its place. Linux is great, but when you have untrained end users you dont want them near it. I use linux for firewalls at all my customer sites. IPCOP for example is a great FREE linux firewall/router/VPN server that ANYONE can configure.
Anyways, AV feels comfortable in windows, the website works all is good.

But what's really douchey is people continuing to wax poetic about how whatever they're championing is better than what's run currently, REGARDLESS of how many times Av has stated absolutely that he's not interested.
