| | | A little update: I've gotten to play with a brand new X2100 M2 that we got for work today, and it is super nice. The onboard ELOM is amazing -- full KVM over the network. A built-in IPKVM!!!! Those are so expensive usually. If everything goes well, I will probably order one of these for UER, next week. -av

These servers will run any x86 software, so it'll run Win Srv, Linux or Solaris x86. I'm sure Av's will run Win Srv, because he writes everything in .asp, Active-X, etc.

I know what they will run. I wasn't sure if being a work place it would run Solaris, which is what I think of when I think of Sun. *edit* Linux does have asp as well..chilisoft [last edit 2/24/2007 5:08 AM by c1rc4 - edited 1 times]

So maybe Av could run windows on the server initially and then play around with said chilisoft and if he gets something that works, maybe migrate it to the server? Just a thought.

Posted by Avatar-X Never mind the obvious problem that none of my code, none of my applications, and none of my Active-X COM plugins would work on Linux. It would not be a gain, it would be a huge loss.

I do believe I saw some of those availible for linux. Whether they are legal is a question of its own though. [last edit 2/24/2007 5:22 AM by Sinister Crayon - edited 1 times]

| | | Why would I WANT to move to linux? Let's examine the points: - More difficult to maintain - No easy-to-use graphical administration interface - No support for my existing software and/or COM objects - A huge amount of my time wasted just to "upgrade". May I remind you that I'm not being paid for this time? Anyway, some other news: I'm actually going to be going with the X2200, with two dual-core 2210's. That's four cores, baby. It's only about $150 more, I think it's worth it -- especially since I'll be able to upgrade the procs later, maybe to 1218's or something when I have money. -av

Four cores are better than two, especially in a server. Wahoo!

| | | I already tried to suggest the switch, but if you don't know Linux it is difficult. The server I am switching to for a website I develop is Solaris actually, which is the only reason I keep putting Sun and Solaris together (and every time someone talks about a Sun server, it's running Solaris here). Linux would be a great thing to run in the future, play around with VMWare to learn it and one day if something new is created use it.

Again, what benefit would Av gain from switching, aside from growing-pain headaches and the like? A properly maintained Windows server is every bit as secure and managable as any Linux box out there. When it comes to Windows management/security, Av knows his stuff...so there really isn't a single up-side to switching everything over to Linux.
