RAID 1 is two drives. You could do RAID 5 (but I dont know too much about RAID 5 to comment on its reliability, I do know it is slower though. Something to do with the striping), You could do a Mirror of a Mirror (I think). 4 HDDs, 2 RAID 1 Mirrors, inside of a Mirror, RAID 1+1.

That's exactly what I was saying.

Oh, give me a break. What's the real chance of BOTH of my raid 1 drives failing before I get a chance to replace the first failed one? Stop being so full of crap.

Hard drives are way more reliable now, if you treat them right. The only drives I have had fail on me in the last 5 years are IBM DeathStars, and Quantum pieces of shit, and Maxtor. Don't buy maxtor.

The Sun X2100 M2 that I am getting comes with hardware RAID. It says so on the tech specs page.

-av

Yeah you're right. According to wikipedia the chance of one modern hdd failing is 1/500 so the chance of the both failing at the same time would be 1/250,000.

The SUN's US site says it's optional, the Canadian site says it's included

Actually I have had two drives fail on me at the same time, but it was a power supply issue that killed them. Still, I'm just a redundancy nut, I can't have my computer down, well because fixing computers is a waste of time.

im like you, my 3 servers are proliants running raid 5 and they have dual PSU so one PSU is on the UPS the other mains with a surge protector, that way if i have maintenance to do on the UPS they will still run

Evil things can and do happen, such as lightning strikes. Even RAID10 won't save you from this. Some data lose will occur, but it will be minimized if daily backups are done to a second HD that is not at the same location as the main server. A 3rd remote HD with the data is not a bad idea.

I was just thinking that exact thought as I wrote the last post. I had two PS failures and my first thought was did it take the HDs, CPU, or mobo will it? After two mirrored drives on a machine, it's rather pointless to add more. Plus I don't mirror, I manually back it up to try to keep a trojan or virus from getting all that data if the worst happens.

From my experience Dell makes crappy products and has terrible support.

And from my experience, they make extremely high quality laptops, workstations, and servers, and adequate desktops. And their service has been top notch for both my business and personal needs (but granted, for the 2 non-business account Dell laptops that I've had over the past 6 years, I have only needed two services, which were both handled quickly. One at my house, and one in a parking lot to do the part swap during a busy day).

I hate to take it off topic, but I also hate seeing people slam Dell over and over when I have never heard of any specific complaint against them other than the fact that the cases are a little chintzy.

well i like the raid 5 setup i got going, its got 4 drives per box and when one crashes i replace it and it keeps on going seemlessly. We have 3 sites all linked by fibre running at 100 (gig is comming this month) i have some cheap ass external firewire drives backing up neighboring sites. Where i used to work we had 2 buildings on opposite sides of an expressway, we had 2 sun dlt juke boxes, one on each side, they backed up the servers across the road from each other respectively. And since we ran 2 domains we had one AD server for each domain on the opposite side of the street. I may go too far with redundancy but i fear data loss. That place with the jukeboxes we had the backups stored in another city!

i have dealt with dell on both consumer and business machines. They offer 2 totally different product lines, like compaq used to, people who slam dell tend to cheap out and buy dimension desktops or inspiron laptops. These are loss leader machines, of course they wont be top notch. The lattitude and precision laptops and optiplex desktops are top notch. I used to slam dell to no end until i have seen the service. They can offer you a business machine cheaper than the cheapest clone with some excellent features. Granted most peripherals are integrated on the MOBO and forget fixing it yourself or upgrading but in an enterprise you are not doing that anyways. You get a 4 year service plan and the thing is taken care of by dell from bumper to bumper. I only wish they would put service tags on thier screens because they mate monitors at the factory with pcs but rarely in the business setting does a monitor marry a PC from cradle to grave

This guy on another forum I visit, is really the backup king. He has multiple servers that back up each other, and tape backups. He does weekly back ups of home based servers and monthly backups of out of home servers. Mind you this is all home storage, no business stuff. I think he does other stuff, but I haven't seen him talk about it in a while.

I used to have a Dell XPS M170, and there was no end to the problems with it. I had to send it back probably ten times, and it usually wasn't fixed the first time. The XPS line is not definitively the cheap line. Also, I felt like the people whom I spoke to usually didn't know what they were talking about.

May I remind you guys that this server will be running in a high-end temperature-controlled power-regulated datacenter? Lightning strikes and power brownouts and glitches are not going to happen.

But Av what if a 400 pound man leans up against the stack and knocks it over or if a woman spills her coffee on the server, how will you possibly protect the server from those possibilities? I don't think you have any idea what your getting yourself into...ABORT!

1) If you haven't already put down the money on the X2100, you really should check the info on their reliability, Av, and see if Sun has fixed the laundry list of issues. At work we have around 100-150 X2100's running right now and they are pains in the ass. One outstanding bug with them, for instance, is that they don't seem to put out enough power to keep two drives running consistently. We were having problems with ours "losing" drives and when the drive came back, the RAID went wonky until a reboot. Sun's engineers came out and measured insufficient voltage to the drives.
That's just one of many irritations with the X2100. It seems like Sun rushed it to market without testing it completely. Ours are older, though, and they may have improved on all of that with the X2100.
And it is, a very pretty machine, by the way, and when it's working it's plenty fast. Don't listen to the douchebags who are insisting Xeons are a bazillion times better. Our commerce platform running on X2100's (running Solaris, not Windows) are pushing far more traffic from their servers during peak times than UER is ever likely to see. There's no need to be a tweaker.

2) Don't become over-reliant on mirrored drives. Regardless of lightning striking or any of the other doomsday scenarios people have thrown out, shit happens. Power supplies fail. Sometimes when they fail they send a jolt to the rest of the system and fry components. Your warranty will replace everything but the data on the hard drives. Regardless of how small you think the chances are of two drives failing at once, it is actually more likely than you think. In fact, I just read two papers based on analysis of hard drive failure patterns and failure rate while rebuilding a RAID is much higher than otherwise. Offsite backup is the only way to be certain your data is intact. Delta-based backups (like rsync) can be life savers. Also, regardless of drive failure, if data corruption happens another way, having incremental backups can be a life saver. For instance, if your forum gets hacked it's nice to be able to restore from backup.

3) Oh boy! Sleep! That's where I'm a Viking!

4) The ILOM stuff on the Suns is indeed really cool. If I remember right, the X2100's have the fancy web-based stuff. Whoever is suggesting a Dell with a remote management card has not dealt with Dell's remote management vs. Sun's ILOM. ILOM is so much nicer to deal with.

5) Could you please rewrite your message board in Object REXX and run it on OS/2? Or maybe port it to NetBSD so you can run it on a toaster or an Xbox?

Yeah, I didn't want to chime in, since the last SUN servers I dealt with were about 6 years ago, but as an example at one company, I had about 30 Dell servers and 2 SUN servers. About half of the support issues we had were with the SUN servers. Power failures, RAM, and mobo replacements. They did it quick, but it seemed excessive.

And six years ago people were still running NT Server 4.0.

Six years ago my blackberry didn't have a phone.

Six years ago I still had a pager.

Times change.
