Yeah, and they are also triple the price. If you want to donate the difference, please let me know

Edit: I am open the alternatives! If you can give me a quote for a better server than what I have chosen for the same (or less) money, please let me know.

Dump Windows and learn PHP/Linux. It's not that hard and you'll save a boatload of cash in the process. No ridiculous licensing fees either.

And definitely the Xeons blow the AMDs out of the water on any day.

If you are willing to forgo the remote access card, a Dell PowerEdge 860 with a faster Core 2 Xeon 3050 and otherwise comparable specs (2 X 250 GB HDs and RAID card included) is $2,213 + Tax = $2522.82.

HP might have something too, but I know Dell equipment the best.

Does the Sun include a RAID card for that price?

I don't think that this is an option, since Av would need to rewrite the whole site.

Actually fairly simple. We created a program to convert from ASP to PHP and vise versa for a website i worked with

My website runs on a sick platform; a modified timex sinclair running a killer core processor from a commodore 64, graphics card from a TRS 80 color computer hooked up to a bitchin 5 1/4 inch floppy at 1.44 meg; killer stuff. And it runs on BASIC. So far I'm happy with it.

Next year I'm going to upgrade the memory to ... get this.. twin 8 inch floppy drives from Radio shack. Nice. After that I might even invest in a daisy wheel printer, but they are loud as a bastard I hear.

Good luck with the fancy equipment Av, don't take shit off nobody!

I got your tour winner right here pussies, at least he'd crash out trying.

Av will do that if you dump Linux and PHP for Windows and ASP

Thats a bunch of good news, Av. Thanks for the website and the quality service you give us.

By curiosity, how much webspace UER.ca currently uses? including all the forums and all the pictures in the DB?

Er, no thanks.

I prefer to use an operating system where it's clear and easy how to configure it, and you don't need to edit tons of hidden config files just to have a firewall or virtual hosts or restricted access to a folder. No thank you.

Never mind the obvious problem that none of my code, none of my applications, and none of my Active-X COM plugins would work on Linux. It would not be a gain, it would be a huge loss.

You linux zealots are always saying "windows sucks, go to linux" but you never seem to consider the whole picture. There's more at stake than licensing fees.

Yeah, no. I want a server, not a toy. One of the reasons I am so impressed with the sun is that it has the remote management card. This way I can fix problems without having to schedule a datacenter visit.

HP might have something too, but I know Dell equipment the best.

Says who? I certainly don't trust them for desktop computers -- why should I trust them for Servers?

Yes, it does. Hot-swap SATA.

The Dell is no toy, it can be configured with a remote managment card, but that puts it's price above the SUN. Price diference is mainly due to the better Xeon CPU. Also, as I point out below, the "toy" has a real RAID card for that price, not a BIOS/driver hack like the SUN has.

Also, if you get the drives included (from anyone, not just Dell) you get the benafit of one warrentee point of contact.

I never said Dell was the best (nor would I ever make such a claim). I said I KNOW Dells the best. I'm most familiar with their product lineup compaired to my knowledge of other companies offerings. I've had good luck with both Dells and SUNs. HPs are so-so in my experience, but everyone has thier biases.

Yes, it does. Hot-swap SATA.

Good, but from the tech specs it's a "fake raid", ie done by the BIOS/driver. The Dell has a real hardware raid card for that price.

Make sure it comes with (or you can acquire cheaply) the drive sleds if it comes with no drives.

So? It's better than the $200 that Dell charges to add a RAID card to your system.

I'm still not convinced that these procs are faster. Can you prove it? Also, was your quote in Canadian or American dollars, and does it include shipping?

From the looks of it your running RAID1, I don't know if I would trust RAID 1. I know, hard drives are very reliable these days, and RAID controllers and pretty proven technology. I assume your buying two identical hard drives, whats to say thats a bad batch and both fail. I know you have some back up system, but this server is to really stop UER downtime. I would hate to have drives fail left and right.

I'll admit a mistake. The SUN X2100 has a "fake RAID". The SUN X2100 M2 (which is what AV is talking about) has a real RAID or none at all. "RAID 0/1/0+1 with optional 4-port SAS HBA" (from SUN's site). I can't find a price (it's late) but that does imply it costs extra just like the Dell.

I'll look around for some benchmarks tomorrow if you like (again, it's late), but a 2.13 GHz Core 2 is definitely faster than a 2.4 GHz A64.

Price was in Canadian, did not check shipping.

I'm not bashing the SUN, just pointing out something comparable. The SUNs we have at work are good, just slow as heck because they are Ultra Sparc IIs.

Edit:
Some benchmarks: http://www.anandte...oc.aspx?i=2795&p=8

Not the greatest, but look at the E6300 at 1.83 GHz. In many tests it beats out the 2.4 GHz X2 4600 or is very close. The E6600 at 2.4 beats it solidly every time. The 3050 is a 2.13 GHz chip and should outperform the 4600. I'll keep looking.

Edit 2: Fixed AMD CPU typo.

You could just have raid 1 with a backup drive. Maybe even two drives in raid 1 for the backup.

Unreliable actually. I've seen more drives fail that were manufactured in the past few years then ones from 7-10 years ago.

True that, I got some old ones still running, yet my new WD dies (I hate you WD!). However seagates are pretty reliable new and old.

RAID 1 is two drives. You could do RAID 5 (but I dont know too much about RAID 5 to comment on its reliability, I do know it is slower though. Something to do with the striping), You could do a Mirror of a Mirror (I think). 4 HDDs, 2 RAID 1 Mirrors, inside of a Mirror, RAID 1+1.

Oh, give me a break. What's the real chance of BOTH of my raid 1 drives failing before I get a chance to replace the first failed one? Stop being so full of crap.

Hard drives are way more reliable now, if you treat them right. The only drives I have had fail on me in the last 5 years are IBM DeathStars, and Quantum pieces of shit, and Maxtor. Don't buy maxtor.

The Sun X2100 M2 that I am getting comes with hardware RAID. It says so on the tech specs page.

The server supports up to 2 drives. The chance of both RAID drives failing at the same time is insignificant.
