| | | So glad i read this before buying a camera. I am in the process of buying a 350D, as soon as i have the cash.
Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs even though checkered by failure, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat. |

The 350D/Rebel XT is a fucking dinosaur. Save up the extra change for a 400D/Rebel XTi instead.

You can even find some good deals on the XSi, now that the T1i and T2i have preceded it.

This is true. The only reason I make mention of the XTi vs. the others is the fact that it has a much larger and better LCD than the XT. If you're going to start anywhere, start with the XTi.

| | | T2i FTW. I got mine a few weeks ago. I love it to death. Same sensor as the 7D at half the price. The kit lens it comes with isn't all that bad ether.

| | | I am an amateur photographer, I was thinking of buying the Canon EOS Rebel XS.. I was wondering if this would be a bit much for an amateur or just right.. I am going to be doing some serious "Urban Adventuring" in a week at an abandoned asylum that is near me.. Well anyways, back on topic, is the Rebel XS good for a beginner?

| | | I'd say. I learned on a Rebel T2 when I was a beginner. Like the T2 the XS is a basic consumer level camera. It has a range of modes from simple point and shoot simplicity of full auto, to full manual modes. Just set it to the green square. You'll be fine. | | | I shot with a Canon Rebel XTi for a little over two years. It was a really good camera to learn with. That being said, it's also a camera that will let you know when it's time to move on and upgrade. I just recently sold my Rebel and picked up a Canon 50D with a 15-85mm EF-S. This camera is amazing! I've only snapped a 100 or so photos so far and I'm really looking forward to learning what this camera has to offer. Swizzler™

| | | Well I'm still rocking my XT it's definitely time for an upgrade but I don't have the cash for that yet. It's a good starter camera because it's a bit of a pain in the ass to use, which forces you to improve your own abilities... Upgrade: I'm thinking a t1i or open box t2i But I may downgrade to a Panasonic dmc-ts2 or Panasonic dmc-ts1 exploringproof camera. I might suffer on image results but it is much much lighter and more durable. It depends on the cash I have and how much my car costs me by the end of June.
OR I could buy some L glass but a Canon EF 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 on a Rebel XT (current gear) vs A 17-40L on a Rebel XT vs Canon EF 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 on a Rebel t2i I think I'll be able to pull off better shots with a better body. Having the cheater mode (Live View) will allow me to get sharper focus up high and at night ... therefore producing better image quality on an overall scale vs Having the same focusing difficulty with the rebel xt viewfinder and literally taking a shot in the dark that may come out sharper because of the better lens. And the higher ISO on the T2i or t1i will make shooting long exposures much faster... Instead of metering the proper exposure using f/8 30" ISO 1600 to meter a 4 minute f/8 ISO 100 exposure I can meter for 4" it using ISO 12800.

| | | You definitely do NOT want to use the 24-85mm f3.5-4.5 on a T2i. It's kind of meh on the XT, it's going to be softer/worse on the t2i with it's insanely high pixel density. [last edit 4/10/2010 10:30 PM by Byberrian Fanman - edited 1 times]

| | | Of course another consideration is the 50d but that's a more cereal investment, because all of my remotes and camera gear was purchased the Rebel series and not all of it is compatible. OR the 40d which has also gone down in price a lot. So it's really: t1i vs t2i vs 40d vs 50d vs dmc-ts1 vs dmc ts2
Ideally I'd like to buy both the 50D and a TS2 and a Peleng 8mm, sell my sigma 10-20 and Canon midrange lenses and buy a canon 10-22 and canon 17-55L, and 70-200L. But that's a lot of money. I might end up getting the best bang for the buck DSLR upgrade and then getting the best bang for the buck Panasonic camera too. I just haven't seen enough good results of the DMC-TS# series yet. 75% of them on flikr or HDR'd to hell and back. [last edit 4/10/2010 10:35 PM by \/adder - edited 1 times]

NO... unless you are purchasing a full-frame body, getting the Peleng 8mm f/3.5 is fucking retarded. The Peleng 8mm might be cheap, but it's a fucking circular fisheye. There is now a MUCH better choice.. the Samyang/Vivitar/Bower/ProOptic/Falcon/Etc. 8mm f/3.5. This one is a full-frame fisheye made specifically for APS-C sensors, which projects an image that covers the entire frame; unlike the Peleng, which projects a circular image.. which leads to an image with the corners cut off with APS-C bodies. It can be found for about $250. [/rant] [last edit 4/10/2010 10:47 PM by Byberrian Fanman - edited 1 times]

| | | I am picking up a 40d nice and cheap tomorrow. This is my first canon and I want to know what people think are some good lenses for it. I'm looking for a pretty quick prime around 35mm and a nice wide angle zoom starting around 15mm. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks

| | | How do you guys feel about micro four third cameras? What about "prosumer" cameras such as Canon G11, Panasonic LX-3 etc...
I have a Panasonic LX2 that I'll be using for a while, but I'd like to upgrade eventually, but I'd rather stay small and light if I can get similar quality.

| | | I'm considering getting into the DLSR "scene" with a D3000, I can get a kit with another 55-200 lense for like 550 or so, or one of the Sony A-230. There is also a D40 and lense for 399.99, but I would rather not downgrade.

If you want to go with Nikon and that price range get the d5000 instead and it is worth the little extra. Stay away from Sony in my opinion.
