I never get tired of looking at them. I have some time off after tomorrow, though a lot of it will be out of town and tied up with Christmas stuff, but I hope to catch up on some of my UE and train watching fun.

Pardon my question, but I figure this is as good as any other place to ask this, but I see a ton of white, square signs with the letter "W" on them along railroad tracks, but I can't figure anything out about them. What are they for/mean?

Im pretty sure the "W" stands for whistle. I assume you saw them near grade crossings?

It's been awhile since my railroad training, but if I remember correctly, the 'W' sign, or 'whistle post' tells the conductor to do one long whistle blast, starting a mile away, instead of the most commonly heard long long short long whistle blast.

Dude..... HappieDaze has been doing some homework. You're both right, it is a whistle indicator. You'll sometimes see them with a number below the letter that indicates the number of crossing within a 1/4 mile. On some lines (UP uses them around here) you'll see an "X" rather than the "W".

Yeah, you might be surprised at all the classes one must take and information one must learn to drive a school bus. Surprising, but good all the same.

Went to the Mavericks game and took the DART rail for the 1st time. Took my camera along just for the hell of it. Really crappy shots no tripod and I was being hurried.

I felt bad that I didn't have any train pics, so today while I was working I snapped some.

Very Nice! The Inter modal museum! I was in that area this morning, I need to get out there and get some shots of that place. Never been in it before though, you got lucky!
