What is the full name that was on the side of the engine? NATIONAL RAILWAY E.....??????
I saw a holiday special recently too. Little better shape though.

The only picture I have of the side is just too dark -- the camera adjusted based on the light from the reflectors, so I don't think the magical CSI computers on TV could even make out the words. But I do have one pic that shows that the abbreviation (I'm sure there's a real name for that) is "NREX", and based on Googling around I think it said "National Railway Equipment Co."

| | | | Mystery solved. The locomotive is a GP38AC, it still carries the NREX lettering but now belongs to FWWR (Fort Worth and Western Railroad). FWWR has a yard just east of the stockyards.
Expect that engine to get a repaint like this in the near future.
I believe that GVRR doesnt allow alcohol on their trains so that explains the different coaches, dont know about them though. But if it came from Grapevine it had to of left from the depot on main street.

The station in Temple looks like it would be great to explore, but it's just a whistle stop -- no time to do more than get off the train and watch the desperate smokers trying to get one last puff.

* Pictures 27-29: Austin, TX Amtrak Station. For such a progressive town, Austin has an awfully crappy Amtrak station. It looks like there's some minor construction going on, but Cleburne and McGregor put Austin to shame (to say nothing of Temple!).

And those 2 abandoned structures right near the tower (opposite side of the tracks) are old crew change sheds, the bigger one smelled(s) like death, nothing interesting in either. They are both bum shacks now.

However. I'm not sure if anyone told you, but it is a very strict rule around here that when members take a ride on Amtrak they MUST take along their friendly moderator and any children between the ages of 10 and 12.

Colorado Railcar came up frequently on the dallasmetropolis.com forum in discussions of commuter rail options. They were the only manufacturer of FRA-compliant passenger vehicles, but Mr. Salci (quoted above) was as short on business sense as he was long on vision. Fortunately, the lenders who "have a secured position" include at least one of their customers, a transit agency in the Pacific Northwest, so the company may have failed at just the right time.
FWIW, I never trust a company whose owner can't properly distinguish the usage of "it's" (contraction) vs. "its" (posessive).

Patch job is a locomotive that was once owned by a different company and still caries that companies paint scheme although with another company, the patch is usually the RRcompanies Herald and the Road Number.
Example. Old Cotton Belt loco operated by Union Pacific. The yellow box with the numbers is the "patch".

And I would think that its ok to put the logo on the loco as long as its not a loco logo on the loco, else they will have to remove the loco logo from the loco.. word!
