| | | Hmmmm, interesting, nice catch RobB. Im not familiar with that railroad, I think the engine has to be a leased unit. But I was talking to one of the honchos over at the Grapevine Vintage Railroad (of Tarantula fame) and he mentioned that they may be adding more locomotives to their roster. That or the shortline FWWR may have something to do with it. What is the full name that was on the side of the engine? NATIONAL RAILWAY E.....?????? I saw a holiday special recently too. Little better shape though.
and one from yesterday. [last edit 12/15/2008 11:16 AM by Bustedknuckle - edited 1 times]

The only picture I have of the side is just too dark -- the camera adjusted based on the light from the reflectors, so I don't think the magical CSI computers on TV could even make out the words. But I do have one pic that shows that the abbreviation (I'm sure there's a real name for that) is "NREX", and based on Googling around I think it said "National Railway Equipment Co."

| | | Re: The Texas Train Thread <Reply # 302 on 12/15/2008 2:28 PM >
| | | Mystery solved. The locomotive is a GP38AC, it still carries the NREX lettering but now belongs to FWWR (Fort Worth and Western Railroad). FWWR has a yard just east of the stockyards. Expect that engine to get a repaint like this in the near future.
I believe that GVRR doesnt allow alcohol on their trains so that explains the different coaches, dont know about them though. But if it came from Grapevine it had to of left from the depot on main street. ** oh NREX is National Railway Exchange ***** A pool of locomotives that are leased out to various shortlines. | | | I was looking at my assorted pictures, and realized that I have some relevant pix from my trip to Austin on Amtrak this past June. Way too many pictures, so here's an index: * Pictures 1-5: Dallas Union Station (passing trains) * Pictures 6-16: Tower 55 and environs * Picture 17: Fort Worth, TX (TRE engine) * Picture 18: Grain elevator in FW * Picture 19: Cleburne, TX * Picture 20: McGregor, TX * Picture 21: Rio Vista, TX (not a stop) * Picture 22-25: Temple, TX (train exhibits & yard) * Picture 26: Taylor, TX (sign only) * Pictures 27-29: Austin, TX
Drum roll, please. [rimshot]
* Pictures 1-5: Engines and cars seen at Dallas Union Station, waiting for the Amtrak's arrival. 1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
* Pictures 6-16: Way too many pictures of Tower 55 and surrounding outbuildings. 6.

* Picture 17: A TRE engine viewed from the Amtrak cab. 17.
* Picture 18: Grain elevator south of Downtown Fort Worth. 18.
* Picture 19: Cleburne Amtrak Station. 19.
* Picture 20: McGregor Amtrak Station. 20.
* Picture 21: Former First State Bank of Rio Vista, "The Cowpasture Bank". You can still see the remains of the private airfield behind the bank building. In the '90s, they got bought by someone who got bought by someone, and it's now just another Wells Fargo branch. 21.
* Pictures 22-25: Temple station, with some old rolling stock on display, and some signs from the train yard. The station in Temple looks like it would be great to explore, but it's just a whistle stop -- no time to do more than get off the train and watch the desperate smokers trying to get one last puff. 22.
23.
24.
25.
* Picture 26: Sign for Taylor, TX. I couldn't find the depot, and I'm not sure there even was an actual building. 26.
* Pictures 27-29: Austin, TX Amtrak Station. For such a progressive town, Austin has an awfully crappy Amtrak station. It looks like there's some minor construction going on, but Cleburne and McGregor put Austin to shame (to say nothing of Temple!). 28.

| | | Way cool man, thanks for sharing them. Those pics from ft. worth are at Tower 55 where I can be found on most Saturday afternoons. And those 2 abandoned structures right near the tower (opposite side of the tracks) are old crew change sheds, the bigger one smelled(s) like death, nothing interesting in either. They are both bum shacks now.

| | | AHhhhhhhhh BK.... Look at picture 7 man!!! Oh dude, you see what I see? RobertB, very nice pictures. Good for us rail buffs to see it from a different perspective. However. I'm not sure if anyone told you, but it is a very strict rule around here that when members take a ride on Amtrak they MUST take along their friendly moderator and any children between the ages of 10 and 12. I'll cut you some slack this time, I won't ban you because I know you just didn't know.

| | | For your reference:
www.coloradorailcar.com ATTENTION: Effective December 23, 2008 Colorado Railcar Manufacturing ceased it's business operations. Colorado Railcar Manufacturing has a major liquidity problem, and it's lenders have a secured position in the assets of the company. The company is in the process of liquidation. The company has no employees effective December 31st, 2008. Larry E. Salci President & CEO
|
Colorado Railcar came up frequently on the dallasmetropolis.com forum in discussions of commuter rail options. They were the only manufacturer of FRA-compliant passenger vehicles, but Mr. Salci (quoted above) was as short on business sense as he was long on vision. Fortunately, the lenders who "have a secured position" include at least one of their customers, a transit agency in the Pacific Northwest, so the company may have failed at just the right time. FWIW, I never trust a company whose owner can't properly distinguish the usage of "it's" (contraction) vs. "its" (posessive).

| | | Usually the larger elevators will have a dedicated switch locomotive. Remember this one (looking at the Purina elevator) Musket?
That has to be one of the best spots for railfaning!

| | | Straight up! lol Patch job is a locomotive that was once owned by a different company and still caries that companies paint scheme although with another company, the patch is usually the RRcompanies Herald and the Road Number. Example. Old Cotton Belt loco operated by Union Pacific. The yellow box with the numbers is the "patch".

| | | Thanks for the enlightenment! And I would think that its ok to put the logo on the loco as long as its not a loco logo on the loco, else they will have to remove the loco logo from the loco.. word! now lets work in yoko ono.
