I found the quiz to be a stupid waste of my time - I'm actually quite offended to have to jump through such a stupid little hoop.

When a few users insist on being idiots it's the rest that have to pay the price for it.

Sure, I've broken a rule or two here - who hasn't? Do you honestly think this quiz is going to keep idiots from being idiots?

Good luck.

I think it's being used more as a security device than anything else, since those people who are here to do what we do will know how to respond (to most of the questions, anyway).

I would recommend though that, if possible, set a limit to the number of wrong answers you can give. Say, if you get more than 5 wrong, your IP/Username/whatever is locked for 24 or 48 hours or whatnot, and then you have to do it again.

I never had any belief it would accomplish much, but I also don't see any harm. So you had to take 2 minutes out to do the simple ass quiz... I just can't feel any sympathy about that. Once it's done, it's done and you'll never see it again, so what's the sense in bitching ?

If it at least gets one newb to read a little bit of rules around here, I'd be happy...

Oh, get over yourself. So you had to take 2 minutes to do a little quiz. Was it hard? No.

And it's not intended to keep idiots from being idiots. Only a lobotomy can stop that. What it's intended to do is make sure that new users understand the basic rules of the board, and the basic 'ethics' of urban exploration (as the majority of those involved want it to be percieved).

I'm assuming that even established members had to do it (myself included) was simply the way the system has to work. You won't have to do it again, so don't give yourself a headache over it.

I found some of the questions had answers that were not covered by the opening page, but would be known to people already on the forums. If we're going to have a questionaire, then it should be neutral and not require any insider knowledge of the forums workings.

And it's also quite easy to say that people that would spend their *valuable time* complaining about a 2 minute quiz are taking it WAY to seriously...

A few months ago, there was a huge discussion about forum security and freedom of information.

After many different polls, posts, arguments, and half-baked solutions, the decision came down to this:

1. The location DB would be locked down, displaying only basic info unless it was viewed through a logged-in account.

2. In order to obtain an account, a quiz would be presented.

The quiz is not so much an attempt to enforce a global set of UE rules as it is an attempt to ensure that the Forum Rules have been read. It also attempts to present a general set of UE guidelines.

If someone doesn't answer the more opinionated questions correctly, that's fine... they will get other questions, but at the same time they will learn the correct answer to the opinion questions. This is why the quiz displays the correct answer and an accompanying blurb about the answer.

The questions are random to help ensure that you read the entire document, instead of just skipping it or skimming it.

If 2 minutes to do a one-time quiz is too much time out of your day, well, I don't care. This quiz is the creation of all of the mods and admins working together. If you don't want to take the quiz, that's fine, but you also won't be able to access the member features of this site.

Edit: and by the way, this quiz has nothing to do with me. In fact, I only wrote some of the questions regarding the rules, most of the more "opinionated" questions come from the other admins/mods. So stop bitching me personally out for this.

In defense of the test. You all are whining about having to waste your so called "valuable time" but what about all of my valuable time that gets wasted on reading ignorant ass posts that have no point or are in the wrong category. Think of all the time that the mods waste in sorting out all the posts put into the wrong categories. Just look at all the moved threads... people have to do that, it doesnt happen on it's own. Think of it as a reminder not to be dumb.

I'm betting it took alot of you longer to read this thread/ post your bitches and complaints than to take the fucken' test!

If security was the primary focus of adding the quiz for new users maybe we should take a page from our own book.

Do we really think telling people they can't go somewhere is actually going to stop them? Would it stop any of us? Is this quiz just a "No Trespassing" sign that many of us would go ahead and ignore anyway?

By our very natures we dislike being told where we can and can't go - what we should and shouldn't do - trying to enfore that kind of rule here is a real larff - People are going to do whatever the hell they want here, regardless of the rules - and until someone kicks them out you're just wasting time and energy trying to get people to toe the line - sure if this was a bible study discussion forum it wouldn't be a problem - but we're freakin urban explorers!

As long as the mods and av keep setting rules people are going to keep testing the boundries of those rules because of a common thread we all have - exploration - more rules will only equal more arguments - more bruised egos and more off-topic discussions.

As a group I think we've all proved that Urban Explorers don't follow rules - period. Sure, most of us have a higher code that we answer to - an internalized dogma of right and wrong - that's what we follow. We have common feelings here about 'nothin but footprints and such but that's not because it's a rule - it's because we share that common dogma of respect.

I don't think making more rules here is going to solve the idiot problem - sorry. I do think it's going to cause more flame wars - more whinning and lowered participation from this communities members.

Personally, I like the quiz. It was short, funny, and not difficult (10 out of 10! W00t!). I especially liked the bribery question.

Ok, while we are whining here, I'll state my own concern once more.

That quiz did require a lot of reading and there were few questions that I really had to think what I'm reading.

I just hope this quiz don't block out fellow explorers especially from Eastern Europe or other explorers that don't have a good English reading skill.

Time will tell...

I still fail to see how complaining and writing long replies is a good idea... Very plainly put. You can sleepwalk through the quiz and be on the forum in a matter of a few minutes, then it's over.

I think the test is a good attempt at screening some new people who do not have the patience or attention span to get to the forums in the first place. Though I do see the point about it really not having an effect on an individual's behaviour in or outside of the forum once thay have completed the test.

Our internet here at work has been cutting in and out all day, so it was a little frustrating for me, but only because I had to hit refresh several times and wait upwards of three minutes to load one page. Of course, any page was that way. Some of the quiz questions only half loaded but I decided to answer them anyway. Even not knowing half of the choices I seemed to do ok.

I don't like the way this question is set up. At least two of the answers are obviously well withing the monarchal-imposed "UE laws".

I think both C and D are legitimate "correct" answers. I assume the coding only allows for one correct choice, so either the code needs to be changed to accomodate this kind of question, or the question's answers need to be reworded to make only one answer right.

I also remember a question that have a "D: A and/or C" or a similary worded answer. I chose D, but according to this theory, A would also return a correct answer as well as C when used alone. Does the code allow this?

I agree with Krazy. I wrote this question, and I think that's how the original answer was worded (C or D). Can that be changed?

All of the moderators and administrators made the quiz. The questions were picked randomly from a list of about 40 that were compiled over the last six to eight weeks. You did it, you're posting again, you don't have to do it again.

And do you look like a moron? I don't know. But you sure as hell sound like one. And about your "you are" question, if you've got a problem with it, have a discussion with Ninjalicious. He's the one who wrote it.

C.

Yeah, sorry, I kinda lost it using 'stupid' so many times... so I'm biting my stupid tounge now.

And the moron thing...yeah, yeah...I know you'll be able to yap back about that all day- after all, it was rhetorical. *sigh*

I think rather than as a way of "screening people" out, the quiz's most likeable purpose is the fact that it eases people into the forums while giving them some ideas of basic do's and don'ts.

Now, some of the questions referred to above I didn't get, I don't know if that's because the quiz has been edited in the interim or because it draws randomly from a larger pool of questions, but the ten I got were very even-handed, fact/common-sense-based and productive.

Bravo to the admins and mods for coming up with this.

The issue over whether or not there is to be a quiz was already discussed and decided months ago. DO NOT DISCUSS IT HERE.

The aim of the quiz is not to force the general UE ethics upon you, but rather to make it clear that these are the rules and guidelines, whether you choose to follow them or not.

To continue your example with a "no trespassing" sign -- Sure, you ignore the no trespassing sign. HOWEVER: having seen the sign, you now realize that continuing into this property WILL CONSTITUTE TRESPASSING. The sign itself can do nothing to prevent you, except to make you aware of the fact that you will be trespassing.

In the same way, the quiz is there to make you aware of the rules... it does not attempt to enforce them. You can ignore them if you like, but if you do, the moderators will eventually catch you.

Okay let me say this whole quiz thing makes sense on many levels but my one concern is this: Some people may think the questions with "what topic would you place this under" is a bit much, some of us would title thing diffrently.

Just so long as we don't have to take that thing everytime we deside to look at UER or everytime someone makes a mistake on spelling or doesn't have a completely perfect topic title it's cool.

Yes, I'm a bitch but we all knew that.
