| | | Posted by junkyard Automatics can't sense the road surface. Now that's a total misinformed load of crap. ABS and auto transmissions and the VCM and EBCM have been used for years to do just that. Over on this side of the pond, we call it traction control. | Yes it was invented by Volvo and MB, on this side of the pond and is also called Traction Control - and we had a system that actually worked about six years before the US even cottoned on and started fitting a knock off, legislation challenged version which was rubbish. Certainly a car can detect what type of road is the ground below it in any given instant, but Automatics can't SEE the road ahead. Now, tell me - can an auto gearbox see a hill on the horizon? Will it change down at the base of the hill for optimum fuel economy? Can it see a dip in the road coming up followed by a hill and know that a bit more gas down the dip will result in better economy getting up that hill? Can it see a Z bend coming up and know to change down for better grip? Can it see the 18 wheeler trying to overtake at the top of an incline and know to back off the torque conversion; as it'll just be wasted when you slow down for it? If the answer is NO (and it is) then in all these situations it cannot read the road sufficiently to ensure best fuel economy, can it? No, it can't - and hence it looses out to a person with EYES who can. Fine and dandy cruising along a perfectly flat highway, but when you have curves, hills, obstacles, fast parts and slow parts to your roads? It's useless. Posted by junkyard And how does off road vehicles not relate in any way to passenger cars? If it's got 4 wheels and a motor, it all counts in my book. I service them all.
| The point I was making is that you can't make a good comparison of fuel economy if you compare a Jeep cresting a mountain and fording a dyke Vs a Ford Focus driving along the highway. That's comparing apples to oranges both in design and overall use. Chris...

| We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit. |

| | | I am curious as to the number of automotive techs here and to their certifications? I don't really give a crap who invented what, because that point is moot. Inventing something, bringing it to market first, and refining it are all totally different things. It seems anything good comes from Europe and all things crap come from the US. There are two big differences between the two sides. In Europe, space is at a premium, here it is not so much. In Europe fuel is more expensive, here not as bad. Things happen more for economic and need based reasons. We never had to be as concerned with the situation in Europe, because our situation was and still is different. If we had the dog ugly and underpowered econoboxes that got great mileage, people would refuse to buy cars here, end of story. Here, people are fat and lazy and like their autos and GPS and all that other BS, and really don't care how big their SUV is as long as it has plenty of cup holders and they can text while they drive. I never said I thought it was right, just how it is. I do get a kick out of how bent out of shape people get about these things. I wonder who makes a better truck, Ford or Chevy?
