what if instead of holding this expo june 3-6, it could be scheduled for the weekend before so it would coincide with Toronto Doors Open 2004. That way alot of interesting buildings will be already be open and there will be more in the way exploration opportunities for the out of towners. Plus the "sorry sir, i seem to have lost my way" excuse will work that much better.
just a thought... let me know what you think.

If it's the weekend before then it wouldn't be too hard to show up a week early (depending on cheap housing/camping), I'm thinking it might be worth it to stay longer if I'm going to be traveling that far. Any Torontoians up for doing some pre-convention activities like that?

I'd definitely be interested in going out on some pre-OPX activities. And I'm happy with the current scheduling of OPX - I'd rather see it held on a different weekend than Doors Open, so that Doors Open doesn't distract from the rest of the festivities. After all, the hobby is about urban exploration, not urban guided tours. While Doors Open is a neat weekend, it is not quite as wondrous as those in cities without this style of event may believe. Some explorers have gotten really lucky with it, and some explorers have been really unlucky with it. If you've got the extra time and cash though, definitely come into T.O. a week early. There's lots to see and do.

Freak and Kowalski: I plan on showing up a couple days early and staying a couple days late. 1 week total probably. If locals want to do pre or post activities with me or others thats icing on the cake, but I realize people have to get on w/ their life and I don't mind going solo. Like I said though, if the locals wanna keep the party going, I'm there!

I'm on the same wavelength as tex' here. I'll probably be in Toronto for about a week as well. Hell, if I'm going to spend my time flying to a place that I've never been before, I want to enjoy my time there.

Would anybody be willing to provide some much needed shelter to lil' ol' Mochi when he gets up there? Hotels cost very many dollars. Err... pesos. Err... What currency does Canada use, anyways?!

What is this "Toronto Doors Open" thing you guys are talking about? Open buildings?! WTF? ~_~

"Doors Open" is a yearly event held in many cities. What they do is they give tours to the public of buildings that are normally closed to the public; courthouses, city halls, transit buildings, closed hotel ball rooms, all sorts of stuff. Tour guides also give the tourists a little bit of history about the building/space/whatever.

Most of the time the areas are very well secured against people wandering into areas they don't want people going. Some buildings are wide open, and you need to sign a waiver before you enter.

Doors Open Toronto is one of the best Doors Open events I've been to. I've been to Doors Open Owen Sound and Doors Open K/W (last year). They weren't as exciting.

I may be able to host lil' ol' Mochi.... but you'll have to ask once it get's closer to the date, I expect a move between now and then and I'm not sure what the new place will be like for room and shit...

That goes for a few people...mind you I'm an hour from TO hehehhe but it's all good

But later, I won't have any definates right now.

Why is marijuana not legal? Why is marijuana not legal? Its a natural plant that grows in the dirt. You know what's not natural, 80 year old dudes with hardons. Thats not natural, but we got pills for that. We're dedicating all our resources to keeping the old guys erect but we're puttin people in jail for smoking something that grows in the dirt.

An hour drive is MUCH better than staying in a hotel and paying the big bucks they ram up yer hindquarters, IMHO. I'll remember to ask again a month or two before the con'.

Utah doesn't have a Doors Open thing. If they DID, I'd be sure to know about it, and abuse such newly gained power, but we just don't.

I've never heard of such an event in the US, occasionally a single building or business will have an "Open House" but the city-wide event must be a Canadian thing.

I'm also looking for cheap housing if I come early, if someone has a floor I can crash on or a backyard I can camp in that would be cool.

RPGs are cool and all, but not really my thing - to respond to the below:
- swapping gear ideas
- climbing lessons
- slide shows
- underground orienteering
- how to leave tasteful marks
- caucusing by region to share more specific ideas, experiences, and tips.

The idea of booths kind of bothers me, conjures up images of big, sterile, boring convention halls. i do hope we'll have something more informal than that.

What other ideas do people have for things that could be done at the con? Booths? Demonstrations? Training?

I think a demo on effective, safe, and non-damaging lock picking would be very informative (and cool to boot). I think they have one at Defcon every year... And we UEers use the tactic much more often than hackers would, me thinks.

Wow, this sounds like an awesome idea! I live in Toronto and would love to go to this. As to things to do at the con, presentations, "tours" and just general mingling seem to be the best ideas. I would love an ooportunity to meet and swap ideas with the people on this forum. As for partying, I'm with Mochi, up with the caffeine, kinda underage when it comes to drinking. And in response to Bawls, very very sadly Canada has stricter caffeine laws then the states, and we do not have Bawls here. But I would love to try some if you can bring em up for the con!

Several weeks ago I had the idea of producing an instructive "docu-comedy" on Social Engineering. In the unlikely event that it comes to fruition by OPX time, it might be cool to have a screening there.
