| | | Posted by anvil I worked for the school district in Victoria, doing grounds keeping. Used to find hypodermics all the time around Vic High and Central.
| I live within spitting distance of both Vic High and Central. I know of what you speak, er...yeah. My son plays in the park behind Fernwood Community Centre, and I am hyper vigilant, as are the other parents. Creepy meth heads often wander through the area, and it's quite a sight to see a group of parents leap into terminal alert mode. Anyway...this is getting off-topic. Back to tunnels (real or imagined). Odd, this little tangent...kind of like following some darkened path that leads to nowhere, but eventually turns back on itself...like a tunnel, n'est ce pas?

| | | Posted by anvil I've just researched many places where people experience true hopelessness and I have a bit of trouble feeling sorry for those who choose not to access the myriad of support services, opportunities, etc. that are available here. How bad is it here, really, compared with the slums of Mexico City, or Darfur, or a thousand other hells on earth, where there is literally nothing - where people dig through garbage dumps to eat. I have a whole lot more empathy for those millions than I do for the homeless Canadian snowbirds vacationing in Victoria for its mild climate.
| I am in total agreement here. There are resources available, and to not employ them as a necessary means for personal recovery seems, to me at least, stupid. If you're fucked up because of drugs (or whatever), for Christ's sake, pick up the phone, fill out a form, check yourself in and get help. Which isn't to dismiss or contradict my earlier statement that some people are incapable of getting help. Some jones' get ahead of themselves, and keeping up with them (to murder a phrase...or at least make pun of them [get it? HAHAHA]) takes everything one can muster, viz. a viz. strength, etc. etc. etc. mental fortitude, resources blah blah blah. And I agree also (here we go again...this agreeing business) that many of the people living on (or off) the streets in Victoria are here because it's better than freezing your ass off in Toronto or Montreal. And I agree that whatever hardships people face in this country pales in comparison to the hardships faced by the vast majority of people who live elsewhere. I've never been to Mexico, or Darfur, or Bangladesh, or any of the other Third World (or 'developing world' as one politically correct neophyte once insisted) shitholes that dot the globe. Picking through mountains of trash, human filth, etc. for scraps of 'food' is a terrible existence. Living in a cardboard box with your wife/husband and your eight emaciated children isn't living, and fuck those who argue that suffering is divine/bliss/etc. Having to eat what dogs discard isn't eating. Especially when typhoon season knocks on your door and sweeps you away forever. Yeah...tunnels. I think all this chatter should be filed under a new thread. So here we go: Victoria panhandlers are millionaires compared with those contemporaries living in the Third World.

| | | Posted by Astar I've been through the storm drain under the hillside mall twice now. Near the "cave of wonders" there is an intersection, and a second tunnel heads west. It quickly turns into a round tunnel, then a low tunnel where you almost have to crawl. Has anyone been to the end of this section and where does it lead? I gave up after a bit as we didn't want to have to come all the way back if it was a dead end. Also has anyone been up the storm drain that Bowker Creek comes out of just north of the hillside drain? I figure there isn't an exit to that one, but I was wondering how far it was passable. Looks like a long drain on the map. Are there any more big drains around town? I'd be interested in checking them out. Any ppl do this stuff in Edmonton? I'll be there for the Sept-Dec looking for stuff to do. I'm interested in the LONG tunnels under the University and river. A* P.s. hi Stacey
| I know a guy who has maps for every drain in the city, going back decades. I've checked out a couple near the Johnson St. Bridge. I know of one in Fernwood, and I know of one that's near Ross Bay Cemetery. I know that some of the tunnel stories I've collected over the last few months translate into drain sites, and I know that some of the drain sites translate into tunnel stories. I know that street levels have changed over the last 80 years or so, and that some of the creeks have been filled in/made into underground drains. I know that there were plenty of creeks that drained into James Bay, and they may not appear on maps, but HEY...the water that coursed through these creeks STILL has to go somewhere, so that's where the drains come in. I know that there are drain exits near the Inner Harbour, and that these lead hundreds of metres throughout the city. I know that many of these drains are about 4 inches in diameter, and are only suitable for exploration by rats. I know that there are tunnels under Fisgard St. and Douglas St, and that these go straight down to Warf St. to where ships used to unload cargo...including illegal immigrants (circa 1915). I know that there's a tunnel near Ross Bay Cemetary, but it's really a storm drain, that leads underground for several dozen metres, and ends up spilling into the ocean.

| | | I spoke with an old man this afternoon. He has lived in Victoria for 80 years. He told me he is 95. He came here from China as a teenager. He has no siblings, and he never married. His parents were sent back to China when they died, and that's where they are buried. He is an orphan. We drank tea. His English was flawless, hyper-grammatical, very precise. He pointed to a lamp post on the corner, and told me that there is a long, narrow passageway six feet below street level that goes half way down the block towards the water. Then it's bricked off. He said that there is an entrance that can be accessed through a manhole. He said that there used to be underground bunkers near Fisgard and Douglas, and these are joined by another narrow passageway. He said that there used to be dozens of people who lived in these bunkers.

Yeah, submarine docked there isn't possible because that's where the spaceship stays. duhhh...
| Sorry, Jester. Now you've gone too far. Just like your 'digging tunnels through rock with a spoon' story didn't pan out (it was a flattened tin can, remember?), your spaceship fable is a bit far out. Even for me. Beneath the waters of the Inner Harbour lies an emergency bunker/command center for CFB Esquimalt, which is (as we all know) the home of the Pacific Fleet, and a major military base of great strategic importance. In the event of an attack, military command is shuttled to the Parliament and then whisked through a Ultra-Top Secret tunnel network to the bunker. This was all built in secret during WWII. The submarine thing is a myth. The spaceship is really docked in that old observatory near Ross Bay Cemetary. The observatory is on top of a small mountain, and when no one is looking, the observatory dome peels open and the spaceship takes off and heads in a straight (more or less) trajectory to its mother ship across the Straight, somewhere behind the Olympic Mountain range. EVERYBODY knows that, Jester. Please stop trying to distract us from our work with your outrageous claims.
