Nice one JP.
To answer your question, Yoshkow, no, i never had a single problem with my camera. I could point it anywhere I wanted without getting in trouble. I think the main thing in China is if you say anything political, or start any kind of movement, or criticise the government. Overall, from what i saw, China seemed very chill, except for Beijing. In Beijing police searched random people, drove lots of hummers, were ever-present; video cameras were as common as trees (and yes, Beijing DOES have a lot of trees)thus making tunnel exploring presumably difficult, soldiers in riot gear marched in formation through the (spotless) streets in the middle of broad daylight as if it were no big deal. The only other place i saw soldiers act like this was in Lijiang, which is a huge tourist destination. On the airplane home, I had a very long chat with this cool Chinese student moving to Canada. He said that he found Canadian culture to be 'wild', and he was flabbergasted when i told him that probably the majority of Canadians have tried pot before, and that a hugely significant percentage (that i don't know) kids under 19 drink booze (however little or much). He was equally stunned when I played him some heavy metal music for the first time (Death, Enslaved, and Hellacaust for those who are familiar), he was very shocked. "They're growling.....like the guys in Linkin' Park! Why are they so angry?" You see, Linkin' Park, despite being (in my opinion) putrid emo music that isn't remotely close to metal, was the most extreme music he had heard before meeting me. In China, i searched very hard for chinese metal (because i know it does exist), but to no avail. At most, i saw some imported non-political thrash and blackmetal albums in stores, but all in English, in touristy areas, and in extremely limited stock.
But yes, you may take all the photos you wish. Ever watch 'Manufactured Landscapes'? Stunning movie.
Now let's talk about daisy chains and bunny rabbits. Here's nice china(which WAS very very nice):

The Courtenay House (R.I.P.)

On a recent trip up island, to my horror, I discovered that the Courtenay House was no more. In fact, not a trace of it remained. In 2004 I snapped a few photos. The building definitely had character. It was evident that the building had been deteriorating for sometime. The metal grating that covered the washroom walls always made me laugh. Definitely a 10 out of 10 on the original scale. I don't know much about the history of this place, but the building definitely looked old. The interior had that 1970's look, probably the last time it saw a face lift. I would have liked to have seen the suits upstairs before the tear down, but I don't own a time machine. I guess the rest are memories, although a bit foggy...perhaps from the water, infused with barley, yeast and hops.

You know, i kinda wonder if this one thread ever puts a strain on UER software, just because of it's sheer size of 121 pages, and 300000 views, and sheer quantity of photos.
I mean, it didn't konk when i posted my zillion manhole photos. Has Avatar-X had any software problems with this thread? Just wondering.

My understanding is that this thread is maintained by a super computer hidden under a mountain in a classified location.

I have come to the conclusion that this thread needs its own team name, much like the infamous 'Flurbex' and F/Rox.

With that said, does any one actually know what F/Rox stands for/ represents? Is it to remain one of those enigmatic facets of UER, always out of my grasp? Or perhaps the answer itself lies within a journey and will be discovered along the way. ...I've been reading a little too much lately. Sorry for sounding like a pompus douche.

On a more serious note, is anyone interested in exploring a house in the wee hours of monday morning in the next two weeks or so? I'm thinking 1 or 2 ish.

'Frox' represents a type of garment worn by middle aged women and/or their hippy daughters.

Had a very bizarre day today....so bizarre that i think it's worth sharing.
So I'm down at archives, searching for info. It's my second time at archives....the last time i went down was a marathon session. I had the guise that i was doing a school project, so the lady there was friendly to me while i gathered all necessary info. So here i am, back, clearly not doing a school project anymore, and asking for info on utilities, wires, sanitary sewers, the Johnson street ravine, gas mains, old factory locations, etc. The lady there is getting grouchy. I ask her what info there is on the British Columbia Electric Railway, and anything about it's utilities subsidiaries. Then it comes. The cold, anroid-eyes stare. "Nothing. You'll have to go to Vancouver for anything on BCER".
How helpful. Then it's nearing closing time, but not quite. The lady made a big point of not pulling out any last maps for me, saying closing time is closing time (now changed to 3:00), as if archives is ever open at convenient times for ordinary people like me. So out i go, instead hoping to find some better info at engineering. The last time i popped down i was given extremely good info on the storm drains. I'm hooked up with an extremely friendly computer engineer. He explains to me what info he can offer me, gives me good research tips, explains some things about the utilities to me, and then shows me his office, and demonstrates how the city's computer underground mapping system works. And of course he asks, "what are you researching"?
-"the tunnels under victoria"
-"really? That's what i've been trying to find out about as well"
-"actually??"
-"yep, all i've ever been told officially is that there is a very large and significant tunnel under the city, and that it is quite secret and sealed. But i can't milk any more info from my superiors."
(GCG.....you're conduit, perhaps?)

Anyways, i'm walking across the square, back to my bike. Oh, and there's the lady at the archives. It's half an hour past, and only now is she closing up the archives. Sure was in a hurry, i guess. Anyways, I'd locked my wheel to my frame, and parked my bike in front of the security booth. But it's gone. So i go up to the security.
"Good day, excuse me, but i'm curious if you know what the fuck happened to my bicycle?"
The security led me to a parkade with a big dumpster. There was my bike, all locked up. They helped me fish it out. According to the guards, COV workers regularly go around and routinely throw peoples bicycles into the dumpster, regardless if you're bike is locked up, or has only been left out briefly. The only way to avoid this is to be extra sure to lock it onto something, whereas for me, you could still carry my bicycle away. And no signs warning of this.
So i was kinda pretty pissed.
Pardon my rant. But on the bright side, that cool engineer had some very interesting things to say.......

I'm disgusted by what they did to your bike, almost unbelievable, it was locked and not bothering anyone. Commissionaires perhaps???? Well worth a kickass letter to Monday, they love that stuff, and bikes rule.

As far as the Archives, you have achieved a rite of passage. Tanuki named her a 'troll', the perfect name.

I once asked her for photos of a particular building; so she brings out a POS Zerox done in the late 70's. Then I said, I'd like to see the real photo. She reluctantly brings it out, holds it in front of me, I reach for it; and she whips it away before I can touch it. Not without gloves young man, you dare not touch what is mine... lol. Just be persistent, and ask to see the real photo. She will surrender to your boyish charm eventually. Maybe.

My sister is Charlotte Light and Dark. Who am I?

I hope this is what you really said.

Welcome to the world of City of Victoria Archives. I don't know if 'troll' is appropriate...but then Tanuki is a better judge of such things than I...but there is absolutely a culture within City Archives of preciousness and a general attitude leaning towards complete non-cooperation. As in 'zero cooperation.' As in 'No, you can't see blah.'

I have no idea who gave these control-freak city bozos the keys to our public records, but they guard their domain like chimps around a banana tree.

That said, there's always a way to get the information you need.
