I'm a little confused. Isn't Mary Hill on the mainland?

Doh! Photo I posted is of Albert Head. Sorry, late night. Mary Hill is a bunker complex very close to Pearson College and William Head Prison. I have not been there in a while. Hope the illustration helps correct my blunder.

This well known park is free and is a couple of minutes from downtown Victoria. I post it for fun, people new in town, and as an example of what may be in the area you speak of maxfinch. Nice aerials and info, thanks.

'Tis indeed, short and sweet, btw, didn't mean to imply everyone knows about this park, it's actually kind of low key. I lived here for ages before finding out about it. Top photo is the lower entrance, 1895 is engraved above.

Checked on Albert Head the other day, I sort of forgot it was an active base. Asked the gate keeper if they ever let the public in for tours. He said he couldn't let me in but to call the base. He then said not a chance for the next two weeks as "we've got something going on".

I asked if he was able to disclose any info about what was going on, he sort of chuckled, I sort of smiled, and as I walked to my car he said 'training'

Bottom two photos are of Bowker Creek, my first drain, done recently, (have been UEing buildings and stuff for many years). J. Peterman's, expert U/G skills had us down the hatch in barely a minute. A well travelled route by UE standards?, (lots of graffiti). Regardless, this is an amazing underground sidewalk.

J.P. spotted some fair sized tracks in the smaller, (about 5 foot) round drain. Also we found four large bags of what looked like uncooked french fries tied to a manhole cover. Weird, and weirder!, fortunately no sign of glowing yellow eyes when I randomly spun around, and aimed the light behind us...Probably just as well we didn't meet that beest, the tracks weren't Yoda's or Toto's.

Nice find. Great pics.

You seem surprized that the military wouldn't want you to know what was going on beyond its gate.

Albert Head is indeed an active military post. Generally, it's an officer training center, as well as a training center for various levels of basic military training.

As I recall (having spent some time there years ago) it's basically a bunch of classrooms, barracks, a mess hall and a enlisted men's club named, if I'm not mistaken, the Focsle Club.

Pool tables, dart boards, rye end ginger and curling matches on the telly. And drunken sailors. Pretty typically Canadian.

Some old guy with no teeth and a flattened nose showed me a spot at the far corner of a vacant lot that's covered by a rusted grate. It's a passage that, sez the guy, leads to one of those underground sidewalk thingies featured in the Times Colonist recently. "It goes from here," and he pointed to the entrance, "to straight through these two buildings, then it cuts both ways and goes north and south all the way up the street. Then it connects to another passageway that goes all the way down to Warf Street."

The space is actually just a covered laneway below ground level, and it used to be the space between two old buildings before it was covered. Now, however, it's the unofficial entrance to Victoria's Underground.

So sez the guy with no teeth and the flattened nose.

He went on to tell me that this prison labour...chain gangs, really...produced gravel that was used to make roads and fill in the little nooks and crannies that once made up the coastline. "That's why there's no records of the tunnels because prison labour made it and once the workers got released, they beat it out of town before they got locked up again. They left no record of having been in Victoria."

He said the Masons (circa 1880's) constructed elaborate tunnels in ravines...essentially long narrow boxes that were laid down and then covered...to smuggle booze.

The rusted grate he pointed to at the far end of the lot is one of the only remaining visible entrances and that as soon as the lot is sold and a new building is put up, access will be sealed forever.

I know plenty of guys who sleep in there because it's warm and dry and there's warm air moving through it. These tunnel things are everywhere. You just gotta know where to look.

So sez the guy with no teeth and the flattened nose.

Interesting indeed K.K.

I've been sitting on some info for a couple of months now. Can't disclose the location, but was told by a reliable source the following: There used to be a tunnel up from the harbor that was open until the early 70's. This fellow and his friends used to go in it.

The entrance has been sealed since then, but so what? What about the rest of the tunnel? No doubt, (no digidity many sections are still intact. I suspect some shops have back entrances, or did, onto this underground 'supply route', which probably had or has numerous feeder tunnels.

This could in fact be, -and I suspect is-, the biggest secret of all. The politicians and city government knows homeless people are down there, and in order to have them less visible and causing problems on the street, they turn a blind eye, and leave them the tunnels.

A classic but lame way to attempt to solve a problem, to pretend it doesn't exist, or use some distraction, (which will eventually backfire).

I'd like to see low income housing for Victoria born homeless people, and in exchange the tunnels opened up and exposed. Out of town homeless people should get help from the cities they were born in. (Obliviously) our warmer climate brings them here. Tricky stuff, but if an effort was made, things could be improved.

Imagine in the pouring rain, or the hot days of August, or anytime you want a break from traffic and noise, to duck below, to take 'The Tunnel' from
midtown to the inner harbour, Sweeet, yah.

We know it's there Mr. Corporate Clown obsessed with profit Mayor, what will you do if we decide to expose the truth...? Pennywise knows, cause he floats, they all float down there!!!

...thank you, I feel better now...

Buddy with the no-teeth-flat-nose thing told me this afternoon that he just saw a guy squash a rat with a sledgehammer in a long narrow corridor that he accessed through a little-known doorway in some maintenance room in the Union Club. He walked in through this doorway and ended up two blocks away, near the Strathcona Hotel.

This seems a bit far fetched. I'm wondering how he might have...you know...walked in to the Union Club. Just wandered in off the street and made his way to some basement level room and strolled through the maintenance room and BINGO there he is walking through some corridor and there's this guy with a sledgehammer and BANG he drops it on a rat.

I asked Buddy how he got into the Union Club.

"Through an open side door in that little parking lot. I walked right in."

Q: And how did you know where to go?

A: My father was a member. That's how I know about the tunnel. It went from the Union Club up to the Strathcona. Back in the day, the hotel was a whorehouse. Back in the day, the gents who played snooker and drank expensive scotch in the Union Club built a tunnel that went up to the whorehouse. So that their wives wouldn't know they were screwing around. But of course, the wives knew.

Q: And this tunnel is still there?

A: Yup.

Anyone who's interested in Mary Hill, feel free to ask me. I just stumbled on this forum while searching Google for UE in Victoria, and it looks like you guys have some really cool stuff here! I've been to the Albert Head and the Mary Hill battery sites several times over the past five years. I was in the Royal Canadian Air Cadets during that time, and my squadron did outdoor survival exercises on the grounds. Both the Albert Head camp and Mary hill are really interesting places, and I've done some limited research on both, but Mary Hill has always been my favorite.

The site was originally constructed in the years before WWII as a coastal artillery emplacement to help secure the strait of Juan de Fuca and the western approach to the Esquimalt naval base. In 1956, all of the major batteries along the strait, including Mary Hill, Albert Head, and Fort Rodd Hill, were dismantled. While Albert Head continues to be used as a training facility for the Canadian Forces Reserve and cadets, and Fort Rodd Hill was opened to the public, Mary Hill was virtually abandoned, though the site would continue to be used for periodic survival and combat training exercises.

Officially, the site is closed to the public. The main road to the site is blocked off by a 10-foot chainlink gate and fence, though it ONLY blocks the road. The fence extends just couple of meters off the road, so you can walk around it, though you won't be able to get a vehicle to the site, unless of course you can get permission from the reserves at Albert Head (they have the keys). It's a long dirt road uphill to the main area, so be prepared for a bit of a hike. Where the road forks there is an old barrack-type building, surrounded by another fence, this one topped with barbed wire. Referred to as "The Barn", it's the last real standing structure on the site. Nothing too spectacular inside, just some bunks for when the forces or cadets stay here, a kitchenette, and a couple of bathrooms. The building has running water and electricity, but it's not exactly the Best Western. Down a bit of a slope, there is an open door in the front of the Barn that goes to the abandoned basement. It's not fenced off like the rest of the building, but I've never been in there.

If you continue up the hill to the left, past the barn, you arrive at the old gun emplacements. Nothing really here anymore, as you can see from the pictures posted earlier. Down the hill, to the left of the barn, there is a flattened out area for tents, and a lower area among some fallen trees. This is the spot to watch out for: there are tons of old foxholes and half-filled tunnels and trenches, as well as rusted lengths of barbed wire. Some are flagged off with yellow caution tape, as most have been overgrown by the bushes, so you really can't see most of them until you're just about to fall in. Many haven't been marked though, so caution should be shown. Past this area towards the water is a flattened cleared area, that was once used for some of the smaller artillery guns. There are also plenty of old roads in the woods around the hill, most overgrown, but still distinguishable by the deep ruts.

Following the right path of the fork, there isn't much, the road just kind of loops around back, though there is a water pumping station connected to a main that goes through the site.

The place really is ancient; it's mostly huge oldgrowth trees, many more than 500 years old. Also, the place was a graveyard for a local native tribe, and you will find burial mounds (look like mossy piles of rocks) and human remains in the bush if you wander around long enough. UVic did an archaeological excavation here about a year ago. Beyond that, the place is seriously creepy at night: the trees are all gnarled and twisted, and the place can be extremely quiet at times. Creepiness aside, the place is really cool and worth a look.

Enjoy!

The Latest News

I met with a couple of members of Victoria's homeless community (and it was THEY who decided on the terms viz. homeless) and we discussed many things. I paid the tab, and they drank pints and munched nachos and seemed pleased that someone was willing to entertain their stories.

Matt (not his real name) told me of a door in a pub located near the Crystal Gardens that leads to a staircase that descends about twenty five feet into a sub-basement that has another door, very old, that opens to a cavernous space that too leads to another door which, in turn, leads into a long narrow corridor.

Following this corridor to its conclusion leads to a door that opens into a building at the foot of Broughton St. I'm guessing this is the old Customs House.

The logistics of this seem dubious. While I am certain that there is a similar corridor leading from the Union Club to the Strathcona Hotel (as mentioned in a previous post), this new information suggests that a much longer corridor, covering almost three times the length of the Union/Strathcona corridor AND angles right/left at certain points. This story doesn't seem plausible.

So we left the pub and walked to the site of this new entrance. Then I was instructed to go down to Warf St. and wait. "Go to the Customs House and wait."

So I did.

20 minutes later, both men emerged from the shadows under a ramp near the Customs House.

"There you go."

"Can you take me through?"

I was accused of being an unbeliever. I remarked that getting here from there under the cloak of darkness ABOVE GROUND isn't that hard, and that if they really wanted me to believe, they should take me with them.

No deal. "This is our place. We know how to get around through these things. They are not part of official Victoria. Neither are we."

I thanked them for their time, gave them each $5, and walked home.

"The whole city is catacombed with passageways"

A quote in todays daily. Are we not closing in on the truth? It appears so, perhaps, as with illumination of the blocks, in time city council will see the merits of opening some of the catacombs. Even if only as a paid tourist attraction. Where is the vision on council?

That said, great they are working towards illuminating the block spaces, a huge step in the right direction.

We could be put on the map for legal safe quirky tourism, on a bigger scale than Seattle's or Saskatoon's? embelished and half true attractions. Let's hope it happens, and they keep it real, more about architecture and history than theatre.

Chemainus, the City of Murals, Victoria, The City of Tunnels...

Ohferfucksakes...are you kidding me? Market potential? Quirky tourism? Get the fuck out of here.

The intent was (is) NOT to find and map these godamned things for the benefit of free market capitalism. Exploiting these tunnels (true or not) in the name of profit isn't the name of the game.

What happens to the people who make use of them now? Shoved off the map again?

This city has a very long running and successful system of dealing with homelessness: it criminalizes it. Pure and Simple. It locks people up for sleeping in public space.

This city spends shitloads of money maintaining an image of Victoria™, and part of this money goes to keeping homeless people out of the frame.

Welcoming tourists into Victoria's Underground amounts to adding insult to injury: this is where homeless people used to live before we turned this into a profitable tourist venture.

Better left in the UNSOLVED file than turned over to the Greedheads.

Wow guys I am impressed. Just based on a quick scan of these posts you guys are doing your homework and Victoria has some real home grown UE!

For so many years, Ninj, Kowalski and many others had just done a few smallish drains and such.

It is too bad it is so far out. Some of the guys here in Calgary are planning a trip into the BC interior but that is too far out to share a few pints.

If you ever come to Calgary then email [email protected] and you'll be made welcome, taken to locations and given free accommodation. We'll help save you the $$$ you spend on the flight over here :)

From my previous post:

"I'd like to see low income housing for Victoria born homeless people, and in exchange the tunnels opened up and exposed. Out of town homeless people should get help from the cities they were born in. (Obliviously) our warmer climate brings them here. Tricky stuff, but if an effort was made, things could be improved".

I don't think the people giving architectural and ghost tours are Greedheads or millionaires. A healthy job, that carries a certain amount of pride and interest in the city and it's heritage and mysteries. The Ghost tours are founded by a strong heritage advocate, who has done much benefical work to preserve and protect Victoria's unique heritage. (We are lucky to have John Adams, as Vancouver is lucky to have John Aitkin)

So these guy are earning a few bucks, frankly, they have my respect I know what it's like to start and run a small business. (For the record, it ain't easy and I never got rich)

If the tunnels are opened up at some point, I don't think you need to worry about the possibility of a Starbucks being opened up down there. Maybe just a little stand where someone's selling old bones for souveniers...

They would be plastic replicas made in Hong Kong of course, the real ones in a museum display. Yah, the city would pull a few permit fees, but it's hard to avoid that, and they would likely carry the liability, a worthwhile trade. And maybe this would permit retiring a few of the more zealous meter readers. Yah, I'm dreamin on that one...

K.K., here are your quoted words of the opening line of this thread.

"Rumour has it that the city of Victoria, in British Columbia, has a secret network of underground tunnels that were supposedly constructed during the last years of the 19th century. Access may be gained through many of the old buildings. Official city policy is to deny; rumours persist.

I would LOVE to learn more about these tunnels. If anyone has a story to tell, let me know.

Thanks.

KublaKahn"

Did you really think that your quest for knowledge of the tunnels would not have a strong possibility of their discovery and exposure; isn't that what you were seeking? (The discovery part would be hard not to tie in with exposure) I respect your concerns. There is room for more than one approach. I believe a major interest is building on this subject. People like and want closure at some point. Or in this case 'opening' of the doors, some mysteries revealed.

I suspect there are many tunnels, (as stated in the BINGO quote in todays paper}, the speed of City Hall would mean it would likely be decades before a comprehensive map was done, if ever. A partial opening of some tunnels would possibly lead to UE potential in side routes. I was born here, like my hometown, flaws and all, and feel an inherent right to know more about it, but not at the cost of a homeless person having to sleep in a cold doorway as compared to a warm tunnel.

With a respectful approach to the homeless, and more shelters like the one on Store Street, well I think they would rather sleep in that place than the tunnels. Why don't you ask some of them...

That quote; (an admission by someone with professional knowledge on the subject) in today's paper is the most concrete statement made on the tunnel question since you started this post. 'Be careful what you ask for, you might get it' I would think you should feel some sense of accomplishment. This is an awesome thread, and I'm grateful to you for creating it.

Believe it or not, we share the same concerns and empathy for the homeless.
Pardon my long winded rebuttal.

I don't want closure in this respect....EVER.

The hunt keeps my alive. I live for the ongoing search and sense of discovery. I've been trying to dig a crawlable tunnel sized passageway out of my basement floor. I hide the 1 metre by 1 metre entrance using an upturned table that we store down there.

Although I'm sure that the homeless would rather sleep in shelters and hostels, it is obvious that there are not enough beds...so whats the next best thing when its freeeeeezing outside..

1. Buddy's place

2. Abandondment

3. Tunnel or underground cavity completely sheltered by the wind..and serves as a kind of insulation

4. Less desirable but somewhat hospitable squat

But lets get serious...who the hell am I to rank these places by desirability?

[EDIT: Khaaaan, when are we going to infiltrate the homeless community by giving up everything we have material except for one set of clothes and a pocket full of loose change? Maybe you could get some days off, bring your boss a giftbasket or something. Don't you hate working for the man? I would suck up to him...he seems like a hard ass.]
