Art

Not art

Art usually involves time and thought, though anything can be debated as art, because art is subjective. Everyone's opinion of art is different.

I won't offer up an opinion, although I can say that there is a distinct contrast in "Art" (however you define it) by artists that feel or care about how they approach there form and people that approach it as just another way to try an offend the establishment.
So I offer 2 items for you to decide which you would rather see interrupting your photo or exploration flow.

As a side note the structure in the first shot is still standing today, The second building has been completely demod.

actually "graff" has a "bad name" because a lot of people think that defacing private property is wrong, and they feel strongly about it--no matter how good it is from an aesthetic standpoint.... I like graffiti, but it is neither legal, nor is it widely appreciated--these two things contribute greatly to it being what it is--deal with it.

Well stated.

Location, location, location!

Good graf I like. Sometime tags like "Monk" and "Kilroy was here".

However not plastered all over places where it's unwanted, such as in/on classic examples of industry, structure, etc. like some shitbirds do.

Example:
Those who painted up the morgue at Haverford hospital fucked up a cool classic autopsy room. It had been very clean up till then.
Yeah, it being demoed, but dozens, even hundreds more have been there since this happened.
Fucks up the whole atmosphere of the place.
these people are no different than the smashers, they are just low life vandals that have no regard for anyone else.

I got my sets before it was screwed up, but not all UEers were so fortunate.
That whole back wall is now splattered with red spray paint; I can't even recall what it says, who cares?

Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in.

people freak out about graffiti, and i dont know why.

some of it is pretty fucking cool looking, as people have already proved in this thread. spraying paint all over a wall doesn't ruin the whole room, just look at other things.

its all about whether the cup is half-full or half-empty

they may be dead but their spirits live on because of the things they created when they were alive... what have you created to be remembered by?

dead is... dead.

immortality was never Morrison's goal; he liked to experiment with people's minds, and play with words.

you are or your not; time is meaningless... as are ambitions that are confined to a singular set of points in that framework.

have you been born yet?

JM didn't tag or graf.

I think there's a big difference between something someone put some time and effort into creating and those stupid tags idiots like to make. I saw a book at Barnes and Noble on graffiti, it was pretty cool. Some of the stuff in there was downright jaw-dropping amazing.

There was one piece of "idiot tagger" graffiti I thought was funny though and that was on the side of the supermarket where I used to work. some moron had gone and painted in big blue letters "SMOKE WEEB" yes, I'm not kidding, weeb with a B! You can still sort of see it even though it was painted over, I should go up and see if I can get a picture of it.

I've been a graffiti "writer" for about 9-10 years. Now I work mainly in blackbooks and online when I'm super-bored.

After loving graffiti for so long, I've come to these conclusions:

Graffiti isn't art.
I hate graffiti.

Who cares what you call it? Anything done on someone else's property without permission is vandalism.

Do it in your own bedroom (next to your poster of that pimped-out Hummer perhaps), or on your own house and see how that feels.

Anyone who says anything else is a deluded child.

writing fuck on a wall is graffiti, an actually drawing or something that adds to the features of a site is art, in my opinion anyway.

So, if I paint a picture on my wall, I'm supposed to not like it?

Oh mandias...always challenging perceptions. Lol.

Seriously though...as has been said and will continue to be said, it's not your property. How many other times has this topic been discussed?

Graffiti may have artistic parts, but that doesn't matter. I consider this an amazing work of art, however if you were do this to someone's car without their knowledge or permission, I can see them being very pissed, especially if you do it in Canada where people are anti Bush, anti war.

While they can be artistic, if they're undesirable to the owner of the property painted and it is costly/time consuming to bring back to pre-loss conditions, if at all possible, is plain criminal damage.
