Self Defense and Such

Well, many have had run ins with violent homeless and just plain "badness makers" just by the very nature of UE. So, when it comes down to it, what advice do you all have for us? What kind of ways can you defend yourself if you are in a bind?

EDIT: No I am not a self defense expert but I do know a thing or two.

First of all:

Run: Seriously, you can't act tough if you're dead.

Strike the weak points: Face? Eyes? Throat? Groin? Yes, if they are exposed, don't give the "Don't go for the balls" pride bs, if that can give you 5 seconds of running time from a guy with a knife, do it.

Improvised weapons: See an old lead pipe? Toilet tank cover? Yeah, anything heavy or sharp will do. Bonus points for both!

Guns: Shouldnt be carrying them first of all (don't even start on this). But, if the attacker has one, chances are, they are one of two kinds of people. Someone who is ready to use it, or someone who isnt. If they come up and jam it in your face and "politely" request your belongings, I'd say do it unless trained to fight this certain scenario.
WARNING: The following technique CAN aggrevate the attacker AND get you quite dead, quite quickly.

If the attacker is not satisfied, start a slow and "scared" speech like "Oh, please, don't hurt me." Except in the middle of your sentence(to take him or her by surprise), very quickly grab the gun in your closest hand and your attacker's forearm in the other, as soon as you have grabbed the gun, preferably not blocking the barrel, jerk it up and out of the way while tilting it back FORCEFULLY. While doing this, use your other hand and jerk his or her hand down and tilt it in the other direction. The gun will probably go off, continue to wrench the gun and arm like this until A ) The gun is in your possession, or B ) The attacker's trigger finger is broken and the gun is in your possession.

Once all that is done, feel free to pistol whip/shoot your attacker and phone the authorities. Stay there and don't shoot your attacker again for vengeance. Remember: One broke finger and/or one bullet wound is explainable.

Hope this helps clue some people in. Remember, that technique is dangerous so if you aren't trained in martial arts, don't attempt it. (or if the person wants to continue attacking, by which time you'll probably be dead if they are that crazy).

Comments? Other ideas? Please don't turn this into a flame topic!

EDIT AGAIN: stupid smilies...

I think the best self-defense advice most people here should be taking is "if the other guy has a gun, do what he says". If he wants your money or equipment, I know it's heartbreaking, but just let him have it. You're not going to get much use out of it if you've been shot in the face. Actually engaging somebody who is armed is not reccomended at all, especially if you're unarmed yourself. I have some slight martial arts training, but I would definetly not mess with someone who had a weapon unless I had one myself, or outnumbered the attacker(s).

are you stupid? You cant learn anti gun defense from reading some crap online.

go take some eskrima courses or something. No matter how many forum threads you read online, without correct and large amounts of training, its not gonna work.

ive never had a situation where self defense was necessary, as ive never run into anyone i wasn't expecting (like guards, workers, etc.). personally, i think the best idea is to run, most people wont go after some random kid.

I have, and from personal experience, when some burglar wants to steal your equipment worth $2000 total from you, then it's best to fight back if he is unarmed. Beat the guy senseless and then ran for it when we could get away. Mind you, this was in a dead-end and the only way out was through him.

I have never been in a plane crash(but they do happen and I was training to be a pilot), but you still practice all the time for them.

I have never had any major injuries on a expedition, but I still carry a cellphone and a medical kit.

Now tell me do you know how to swim? Would you like a trip back in time on the titianic?

100 people have a gun drawn on them (and report it to the cops) and run. From that 100 only 10 are ever hit by a bullet. From that 10 only 1 dies.

If you are faced with a gun holding idiot, don't do what they say(unless you cant escape) run. Thats FBI statistics not my own.

I appreciate that only 1 in 100 people who have a gun pulled on them are shot and killed, but you only have to be shot and killed once to look like an idiot for trying to get away.

Its always a good idea, if they are armed or not, to have your hands up in a "please don't hurt me" position. It looks innocent, but lets you slip into a punch (or a grab) very quickly. They even went over this in my self defense class, and my friend and classmate said that he used it in a bar in israel. Please don't hurt me, hit, hit, run.

First, I resemble a cop(dress, hair style, build, age), so most folks of that persuasion tend to avoid me. Second, I don't explore alone.(strength in numbers). Always be aware of the surroundings and use your ears as early warning devices.

Every situation is different and it's difficult to advise one on how to defend oneself and all situations. My advice would first be to avoid any/all contact first, back out quick if you supprise someone and get the heck out of dodge asap.

I don't carry guns or any offensive weapon. Not even one of those extendable steel batons like the po po carries. Only a big can of CS so I can incapacitate the assailant long enough to beat a hasty retreat.

I figure a lot of the members here are young, (under 20) and adult homeless people tend to feel superior to people that age. Bare this in mind. If you know your foe, you have a large part of the battle won.

CS? You mean capsicin? Like pepper spray?

Also ColdWater, I told you first and foremost that the thing I wrote about was a dangerous technique but I felt that if the person was jamming the gun in someone's face and jammering about something crazy even after you've surrendered your equipment, I don't want a UER Member to end up dead without a fight for no reason. And I do know people need a lot of training before they can successfully disarm an attacker, that technique I showed is a very easy one that can be practiced (not full contact, cause after a while your partner is tired of a broken finger) easily.

But really, these things DO happen! Arm yourself with knowledge! I agree that the arms up posture can easily be used to deceive attackers. Also, yeah a camera can be used as a manly bludgeoning weapon of hurt and badness, glass. But, don't forget the nearby trashcan lid, or gutter nail.

Just want to help people. And for God's sake, read the cautions on posts before you ask me if I'm stupid.

hmm. interesting post. if someone has a gun or any other weapon and you are not trained in anti weapon combat do whatever he(usually)/she says. If you do know anti-weapon combat, i don't need to explain...

this thread reminds me of self defense against attackers with fruit. come on, attack me with the banana. come on come on, BANG.
when i first started i used to be really concerned with weapons and self defense, but i've learned that all you will ever need is the ability to control your ego/anger/whatever and to be able to get out fast. i dropped carrying weapons early on and focused instead on learning parkour. not carrying knives, etc not only makes you less suspicious, it also leaves you more free to move, which is what is most important. submission and agility are all you're going to probably need against a disorientated, starving junkie. don't be so fast to beat someone into the ground with a large blunt object, they'll take care of themselves probably. plus you get to do cool ninja stuff this way.

Don't try anti-weapon moves if you don't already know them and if you are concerned take a couple of self-defence classes, this goes especially for the ladies. There was a post by a poor girl on this site who was nearly gang-raped on an exploration, i think everyone should have been made to read that story but it was in quite a backwater thread. Also, don't go it alone.

Yeah Pepperpot's tale was definately on my mind when I decided to post this.

As stated in my original post: If the person has a weapon, try and do what he/she says. If they persist and look as if they will kill you anyways, fight back at least. Otherwise, run like hell. Get stuff between him/her and you. Do the classic ninja leap over the trashcan while knocking it over, whatever.
