"I've always had the utmost respect for those men, enduring freezing cold, little supply, and at the same time I've had the utmost respect for Brit regulars, even the Hessians, who the hell could maintain proper "etiquettte" after dragging cannon 100 miles over indian trails (trust me I live there). And then when you get to your destination you expected to look good and follow proper order of battle. Nuts."

* The sacrifices our ancestors made to establish this great nation are often overlooked, under-reported, and rarely appreciated nor understood. We have become too fixated with Jefferson's handful of slaves or Washington's hemp cultivation!
* I recently went to war with the internet, telephone, a terrifying air force watching over me, and totally f'ing amazing body armor that saved my ass time and again. War sucks even with modern conveniences @ your basecamp - I have mad respect for the WW2 generation (watch Band of Brothers) and even more for the more primitive soldiers of out 18th/19th century past.
* Fighting in the freezing cold, hungry, with no shoes, standing in a line with a rifle that fires once a minute seems like utter madness to me - better them than me. Were it that our generation had to endure such hardship - our country would still fly the British standard.

The Black-Powder Concealed Carry statement was a joke. I was just imagining the humor of the situation. . . . .Dukes, that was an amazing diatribe, I tip my hat sir!

I got in my share of barfights when I was younger. Clobbered a few people senseless, and in return had to be scraped off the sidewalk on occasion, too. Learned quickly that a bic lighter, if found in my pockets by the cops was not classified as a weapon, yet made for an excellent fistpack, i.e. Much more effective punches thrown.

If I am being approached by a bum, which has happened to me a few times poking around in alleys scouting, I just take the bic lighter out of my pocket with one hand and grab a smoke from my pack with the other hand while saying hello to them as they approach. Generally they get distracted asking to bum a smoke for a moment and once you've given them one they will be a lot more friendly about asking you why you're in "their" space. Hell, give 'em some pocket change for a beer and listen to one of their stories or something. LOTS of bums here in SF and Santa Rosa...Never had to use that lighter offensively while UEing or scouting, but it is there if I need it. Even if you don't smoke, Lighters are always a useful thing to have with you in daily life and double as a bottle opener.

That being said the few places I have poked around in I've never run or defended myself. Explainined to a cop that I was taking pictures of the old Zumwalt-Magrini dealership to send to a guy on the car forum because his '70 Challenger was bought there. He asked to see the pics I had on my camera after searching me and running a background check on me. He stopped me because I was in the service alley peering in windows of the old garage, inside the chain link fence. I told him I was trying to get pictures of the inside of the old dealership for my buddy and showed him my photos. My pics matched my story and all I had on me was a camera and my lighter. Turns out the cop was also into old musclecars and thought it was pretty cool that I was sending photos of the original dealership to the car's new owner. Given a warning. Trying to run or fight in this situation would have turned it ugly, FAST!

While doing something illegal like tresspassing, Once spotted, evasion, self defense and IMPROVISED weapons should be a last resort IMO. Being let off with a warning = good. Tresspassing + Assault + Weapons charges = BAD! Breaking & Entering + Resisting Arrest = BAD!

If you carry a Kentucky Longrifle with no powder, shot, caps or bayonet, just the gun for intimidation/bludgeoning, would it count as a firearm or a club?

Legally speaking, black powder guns aren't firearms. At least, not around here.

But, common-sense speaking, they're still guns. Chances are they'll treat them as such.

No, the guy in my av isn't actually me.

Around here anything that CAN be a weapon IS a weapon. Especially if it is brandished as a weapon, used to intimidate, or cause actual injury you will get the weapons charge.

Moderate weight lifting and heavy cardio workouts will do you plenty of good.
I'm 5'8 and weighed 260 pounds a year and a half ago.
I started going to a local 24 Hr Fitness in June 2005 and I am now keeping my weight between 165 and 170.
I feel much lighter and quicker on my feet and have since picked up some light acrobatic moves I emulated from the watching of others.
This is extremely effective in my "flight" option.
On my bicycle, I'm usually 2-3 miles from a potential foot attacker in 10 minutes.
On foot myself, the warp-speed propels me over six foot walls and any other obstructions like a glider.
And if I'm surrounded, I'll initiate the "dive-under".
