| | | Posted by RobertB So far, then, there are three places that have been suggested:
* Pizza joint in Irving I can't remember the name, so it's hard to get reviews. That one may be eliminated because the bozo who suggested it (me) didn't give us enough information.
* Louie's, Henderson & Ross The CitySearch review calls it "haven for writers and public figures in search of a little anonymity." Anonymity == good. Food "doesn't venture far beyond bar food like burgers, pastas and salads" and includes "large salads served family style in portions generous enough for four to share." Bottle beer (no draft), and they only take cash and Amex (that's wierd). No smoking.
* Cock & Bull, Gaston & La Vista (Lakewood) A bit more than pizza, Quick notes that "Honey-glazed quail could grace the chalkboard specials on a given night." Their standard $8 burger, the Red Bull, "oozes with smoked gouda, chipotle mayo and roasted red peppers." Contrasting with Louie's are the 12 on-tap beers. Smoking a-go-go; Quick suggests you "prepare the Febreze".
If it were just up to me, I think I'd lean towards Louie's. It seems more amenable to a furtive meeting of people whose common interest lies in the shadows. But the Cock & Bull has a lot going for it, too, especially if beer and plastic flexibility are on your list. C&B may not let my under-18 daughter in, though, which would exclude me from the meeting. On the other hand, their web site advertises free wifi, which would let us view our impressive collections of por... um, sry, abandonment pictures. A couple of great suggestions so far. Any others? The next scheduled meeting wouldn't be until around April, so there's no rush.

I'd contribue some meat and beer as well. That actually sounds really fun... a cookout of sorts...

*lol* I had so many great memories of Crystal's Pizza in Tulsa. It was the most awesome place, with tons of video games and a sure-nuff movie theater, playing cartoons all day! I could hardly wait until my kids were old enough to go to the Crystal's in Irving. Finally one day we went. The pizza was just ok, the projection TV used for the cartoons had seen better days, and what games they had were either not working or just lame. The thing is, I don't know if the chain had gone downhill, or if the difference between a preteen's memories and a grownup's reality was just too big to overcome. But in any case... no, I wasn't thinking of Crystal's for the meetup. The place I'm trying to remember is on Belt Line north of Shady Grove, on the east side of the street across from the trailer parks. I still can't recall the exact details, though: I found it because my ex-mother-in-law (mother-out-law?) lives in one of the parks, so obviously I don't go there as often as I used to.

I used to eat there a lot when I worked at the 183 animal hospital. It was new and still nice then but that was 1982.

Yeah, but at least we can turn on the radio and hear music we remember without having to listen to a bunch of screaming morons. I *love* being 40!

I used to frequent the Crystal's on Camp Bowie in Ftw back in 1976. It's long gone now. Yeah, dirt got nothing on me!

| | | I've just skimmed through this thread a little - I've been wanting to come to a meeting but I've got the usual troubles all the rest do. I work all week and spend any time I'm not working with my son, who's 4. I've spent the last year helping start up a small company and haven't had time to explore or do anything of the sort for a long time. Also moved out into the Keller area and out of Southside FW, so UE requires travel and planning for me now. (One benefit of living in the Southside was that UE could be a spur of the moment thing - there was always something to look at, look for, see and take photos of. In the suburbs; not so much.) I like the hole in the wall idea, but I only know of places in FW (real holes in the wall with the best food for cheap). I really want to come out and meet up and desperately need to get out and explore more - work is finally letting up enough where I can do that, and the stress that's built up over the last year means I'm due. What are the possibilities of having more frequent, less organized meets? Maybe the meets are focused around location outings or, for lack of a better term, "themes" (photography, drains, abandonments/specific locations, infiltration, etc?) --I ask because I'm really more of an infiltrator than an abandonment explorer these days. I get a little kick out of the social engineering aspect of infiltration...

Any places in particular? Even if we never manage to get organized (we're not exactly the follow-the-leader crowd, donchaknow), I like learning about the cool hole-in-the-wall joints. Is that legendary burger joint on Camp Bowie (so legendary I can't remember its name, starts with K?) still running? Its hours were a bit iffy, but the seating is all at picnic tables, and the burgers are awesome. Last time I was in FW, my son and I found a wonderful pizza joint downtown. Again, I'm clueless on the name, but there was dining upstairs with tiny recessed windows that appeared to be from the pre-AC days. Reasonable prices and great atmosphere. One of the ideas was to have separate east-side and west-side meetings, and if you've got the situational awareness, we're well on the way!

I just wrote it on my calendar. No April Foolin'. If nobody's there, I'll raise a glass (of Dr Pepper, 'cause I'll be driving) in honor of the board.
