Well, how would Irving be? I finally found out that the place with the pizza the size of a car tire is Ciro's Pizza, 582 South Beltline, Irving, Texas 75060. This time, it's *not* a block further than I thought (like FW), nor is it abandoned (like Wax, but that wasn't so bad after all).

They have the widest menu I've seen. The giant 20" pizza is cheap at $12, and cheese pizza slices are $1.85. But they also have honest-to-God entrees, like an under-$8 lasagne that is a step above the mass-produced version at any casual dining chain. Or you could go for an Italian Sandwich (Prosciutto, Salami and Cheese) for the same price. Or for you big spenders:
Lobster Fradiavolo ......................................... 23.10
sauteed w/fresh tomatoes, onions, garlic with mussels w/white wine sauce or red sauce

I've never seen a place with a $2 pizza slice *and* a $25 lobster dish. I can't claim to speak for the taste of the lobster, but the items from the pizza to the lasagne were good, so the joint seems like a winner to me.

Add to that the atmosphere. It's a few beat-up tables and booths, next door to a pawn shop, across the street from a mobile home park. If that don't feel like home, then you ain't livin' right.

So what do we think about Irving for August? And how about we go back to the first Saturday (8/2), because the second Saturday is horsey day for me. I like 4pm, too, because it gives us time for... um, the unexpected.

I like that
The first Saturday instead of the 2nd sounds good easier to remember.
The place sounds good. but Irving is hard for me to get to theres no rail service out there.

I live right next to the high 5 right where 635 and US 75 meet so if anybody is coming my way please let me know.

I'll have to look up the schedule, but West Irving Station is 5 minutes from the pizza joint. Just get off the train and call, and one of us can run over and pick you up. There's a bus, too, but of course Saturday schedules are pretty sparse. I'll look it up when I get a chance.

That seems to be a pretty good place to eat. I think that the whole pizza and lobster thing is kind of weird, but whatever. Do you know if they have any wi-fi there?

Hint: save the tequila for *after* posting.

Saturday is the next meetup, at Ciro's Pizza in Irving, 4pm (early enough for any unexpected surprises) and the event listing currently shows 4/4/4 -- 4 say they'll make it, 4 say maybe, and 4 say they can't. Well, even if it's just me, the pizza's good.

Gringo, if you're planning to come down from KC, you are *required* to bring some of the, what do you call that, oh yeah "snow", from the second picture. We've heard about this white substance that falls from the very clouds of the sky, but we do not truly believe it exists.

I'm sorry, but I refuse to contribute to your coke habit.

Anyway, I won't be there for this Saturday, but hopefully I'll be down there soon enough.

And then, it asks the question: in a cold, uncaring, ruthless world of corporate slavery and assembly-line experiences . . . how is it possible to still live a life with strength, and passion, and with a soul that is still truly alive?

I'm glad the reminder prompted folks to look at the event listing... now there are only 3 confirmed. D'oh!

If anyone wants to ride the train, just call when you get to West Irving Station and I'll come pick you up. Send an email to uer at littlecutie dot com and it'll go straight to my cell phone, or send me a PM and I'll give you my number.

Train schedule for Saturday:

Leave FW: 3:55
Arrive West Irving: 4:39 (better late than never)
$5 day pass from FW

Leave Dallas: 3:52
Arrive West Irving: 4:17
$3 day pass from Dallas

The trains before those come an hour earlier or so, which is a bit before I'll get there. But you might check dart.org to see if you can catch a bus. Not sure if that bus runs on Saturdays. I'd check, but dart.org is giving me fits for some reason. The train schedule is here, though.

Looks like I'll probably make it to this one. My friend's band has a show in Fort Worth that night, so I figure I'll head over and make a day of it.

Pretty low-key this time. Any suggestions for September?

* Ciro's in Irving was good, so going there again would be nice. Pizza the size of a car tire, can I have a witness?

* If we want to be more transit-friendly, I know that Joe's Cafe in Irving, right by South Irving train station, is open and good -- because my ex-mother-in-law worked there until health problems slowed her down. Plain ol' down-home cooking.

* Downtown Fort Worth has some definite charms, though I'll try to find the pizza place I was actually looking for next time (the one with the balcony and recessed windows -- photographers will love it).

* A.Geoduck has found a couple of great spots in Deep Ellum (though I only experienced one). Parking's always a bear, but the architecture is awesome.

* Still trying to figure out anyplace transit-friendly *and* cheap in Dallas.
