That Rexall is directly over where the 2nd home of the Union Club was-which lends a lot of credence to the story that there was a tunnel that ran from Union Club to Strathcona members would use to visit their "girlfriends" while dining at the club. The reference seemed far fetched from the current Union Club home but that Rexall is smack dab over it-also probably connected to the church and the old whorehouses on broad street-currently Pags and other business. They edited the story that quickly eh? So obviously the tunnels are a total myth;). Drains are cool but tunnels are what this thread is really about-and they don't exist-never even seen a picture, well maybe a few of one particular location that's been on this thread 3 times. If they weren't still actively being used or protected you'd figure someone would've stumbled across them and posted a bunch of pics-are the satanists still in control of the underground in this city? Satanist Freemason government workers? 10 feet doesn't sound low enough though. Probably just the original basement. None of this matters-people who watch this site have infiltrated the community-no one is safe;)

You're being facetious, right?

Thoughts?
Found a very interesting city resource lately and started learning some definitions. Very interesting stuff. ALOT of brick walking size drains around that corroborate with stories ive heard in the past. Just wished i could find a similar resource for oak bay 😣😣😣

There really aren't actually, so my thoughts would be to try to be discreet when posting in public threads.

Also, welcome!

I'm not jumping on you, just giving my thoughts and the context for having them. There are not a lot of walking height drains around here, and even fewer of them are brick.

Didn't have time to take a pic but they were doing some "construction" under Yates today near the Scotiabank-had a nice long look into a large conduit space under the sidewalk. Had to crouch to get a long view but didn't see any end in sight in either direction. Bit of a public spot to open up but maybe late at night/early in the morning-might be worth a trip. Anyone know how to hide a 12 ft. extension ladder under your coat;)?

http://www.islandn...manhole_covers.htm

Most of them were made locally, check around Victoria and Esquimalt for Victoria Foundry and Victoria Machine Depot stamped ones. Downtown also has several remaining BC Electric Railway covers. Oak Bay has some fancy imported ones.

The new ones don't have any identifying markings, and you can often find them with cracks.

There isn't much of a pattern as it relates to drains. Older ones tend to have more of the waffle pattern ones, but they also often have new ones. Likewise, newer drains often have older manhole covers, either because they joined to an older manhole shaft, or just because that's what they had available.

If it's marked sewer/sanitary, it is in all likelihood an actual sewer. There are some mix-ups, but I would guess the vast majority are correct.

There's a local draining thread buried around here by the way: http://www.uer.ca/...=1&threadid=115249

Oh geeze.

I just read this entire thread from start to finish, and woah what a journey. Only took me like 5 days, because man am I an avid reader.

Such history here, such vivid imagery. It was like I was reading "It" all over again!

Good work everyone from the start of this thread until now on the research and time you put in. Such an incredible city with a fascinating history. I had no idea draining was a thing until I stumbled upon this forum, nor did I know such beautiful architecture was right below my feet.

I have only lived here, in downtown Victoria for 2 years, but I have been so fascinated by all the old, derelict buildings strewn about. I actually work in a building built in 1931, so not as old as some, and it's quite a boring structure... but alas.

I noticed the bricked over doorway/windows along the rock walls of the parking lots when I first explored my new home, I always thought in my head "I wonder if tunnels exist here?"... I have done the Seattle Underground Tour, and just hoped that something like that actually existed beneath these city streets. It's amazing to know that likely, something did, but I am saddened to see the city had such a careless attitude about such history. I love that Seattle (after much red tape) actually opened such history to the public.

Anyway, I am just rambling. Super excited that I found this, and thank you all for teaching me something new and allowing me to partake in the journey with you through your words. It's been a ride, and I'm sad that I came to the end so quickly.

Well thank you for the welcome, I'm just excited that the persons thread I poured over for 5 days just replied to me! Hah.

Such interesting material in here. Should print this and sell it all!

I doubt I'll do much (if any) underground exploring, I'm more an above ground guy, but I love reading about it and seeing the photos. I would be interested maybe one day in exploring abandoned buildings and such, but for now I'm content being a reader of others adventures. Although I am pretty choked I missed out on the abandoned Janion days, I moved here while all the condos we're starting to go on up.

Good day!

Your comment is rather confusing considering wax is a natural substance made from the following:

Garbage:

I hope that clears things up! Have a nice day!

Nice! I haven't seen many shots of those, and never been in one myself.

I do wonder how extensive they are. There's a manhole with light shining through it from below sometimes just a bit further north on Broad, and this is what used to be in between: http://3.bp.blogsp...+Fort+and+View.jpg

You can't really make out Broad in that, but those other doorways do look like they passed under the road at one point, they look consistent with the buildings above.

There are other manholes-with-light-shining-through-them downtown as well.

--

Unrelated, there's a construction hole on Wharf St near the old custom's house right now. The hole itself isn't interesting, but there is a layer of brick on one side and what looks like a partial break-through to another cavity.

I really don't know why there would be brick there other than to support something below. Wharf St hasn't really ever changed, beyond getting re-surfaced, and I don't think they used bricks for that.
