alright everyone, facing a choice for my next ride...we have two current contenders.

'86 BMW E30 325es coupe vs. '83 Benz W123 300TD wagon

thoughts? it's the ultimate road trip car vs. an E30. both are the same price; the Bimmer needs a fuel pump and a valve cover gasket while the Benz needs some shocks, an oil pan gasket, and a new trunk lid.

I had an 87 325es and loved it.. so much torque. you can roast a burn out forever.. I have owned an e30, 2 e36's and now drive an e46. go with the bimmer man!!

Only Issues I had with my e30 was that it nickeled and dimed the hell out of me.. 20 here, 50 there. but it was so much fun to drive. I took the sprung flywheel and put a once piece in it. best investment i made on that car. about to do the same with my e46.

Sounds like the benz needs some parts.. lid might be hard to find, shocks are never fun.

Yeah, my E30s (both 318i's) have been little money pits in the past but this one has few enough miles that the odometer still works! Much better place to start. The only thing I can tell it needs is a fuel pump (soon) and maybe a master cylinder. Brakes and clutch felt a little stiff.

I noticed that torque today when I drove the es, that M20 feels more like the Benz's diesel than it does my 318! Just put your foot down anywhere above 2500 and FOOOM...lightspeed!

Also, the Benz sold but I'm going to to check out another W123 sedan this week...we shall see, but I'm prooooobably going to buy the Bimmer

You just reminded me- I had an '86 325e that was absolutely unstoppable. I think it had about 450,000 on the clock when I sold it. Everything worked on that one all time time and when it did break, it still got me home. The best part is, I originally bought it as a parts car.

Is the fuel pump doing the E30 scream?

a fried of mine was given an 83' 300TD and had incredible luck with the thing. It ran until over 500,000km and was solid as a tank. eventually the head gasket went and it "shit oil all over the highway", but when it ran, it was a complete tank. We got it up to 180km/h no problem back before the stupid street racing laws came into effect.
The other thing I always loved about that car was the bible sized owners manual that had full technical drawings for almost every system in the vehicle. It was designed to be fixed / maintained by it's owner, not the dealership.

YES!

Glad I'm not the first one to hear the banshee wail lol. One of my E30s had a pump go out just as it was merging onto the highway...not fun haha but I do know how to do that job myself.

I did like that manual thing...almost every one I've looked at so far has had that ridiculous owners/shop manual and usually a Chilton's to go along with it. Great stuff!

Yeah they're a very nice pump to do. I did one in about 10 minutes when my '89 325is decided to die in the middle of town- already had the new pump on the passenger seat!

Anyone in here drive a Subaru? I looked at two first-gen Legacy wagons today, I have a feeling one might make a really good mountain car/expedition vehicle.

Legacy wagons are fairly bulletproof. Like all Subarus be wary of cam seals, crank seals. Exhaust parts for some fucked up reason are fairly expensive and the cars are prone to corrosion in the northeast. Other than that, you can rock a Legacy 300,000 miles if you keep it serviced. My advice, though, is to go with a Legacy with a manual transmission.

I had an Outback wagon with 370,000 miles on the clock when I sold it. She was a bit sloppy at that point but still worked great and was reliable.
