| | | i just got a "folding ninja grappling hook" at a online store(18$) its very good quality. the hook itself weighs quite a bit i would not want it falling on my head. KRAZY is pretty right on about what he said. that homemade grappling hooks looks good too.

Sure, why not...
I use Screw in utility hooks (yellow vinyl covered or black foam/rubber covered) from Home Depot. they have lots of different ones, so pick an appropriate size (probably about 4-8 inches long not counting the screw in part). The strength that the grapple can support will depend on how many of these you use. I have found that a grapple with just 2 will support at least 170 lbs for sure. I think they probably rate for about 100-150 each in strength... [p4ic=2658]
So, you take your hooks and hacksaw off the screw ends. Now you put a few, probably 2-4 together, and bind them with a small but strong rope/twine. Then, Weap the entire centre section with Duct tape or hockey tape (I'm not joking, it actually works very well for this). Both ends should have a hook on them. Then you need to tie your rope around that centre section, with the bottom hooks acting to keep the rope from beaing able to come off.
[p3ic=2659] [p3ic=2660] [pi3c=2661]
The Rope, I use a water ski rope, high strength but light. To help members *cough* Pixie *cough* that are climbing deficient... there are; spaced roughly 1 foot apart, a knot, then a hand/foot loop, then knot, etc etc. This allows you to stop at whetever height you are and basically *stand* there with a foot in a loop, so you can use your hands to get yourself in where you're going...
Yes, some will say how the rope strength is diminsihed by the knots, But I have tested this set up, many many times before actually using it on a mission, and have had no problem whatsoever. I have used the hook/rope combination to go up buildings, down off of tall docks, and other uses as well. I am very happy with my creation.

how much do you weigh? i used to have those things in my garage, and they would bend prety easy if you put more than 50 lb on one.

Go to Home depot, there are bout a dozen different hooks, some with ratings of 150 lbs (per hook). The heaviest anyone has been on that 2 pronged hook is about 170.
I've used it on the Harrisson/Kilby Schoolhouse, McBarge, and the North Van Ship yard. As one of a very few on the forum that has actually used a grappling hook in real life, all I can say is... it works.

| | | OK, I'm gonna get a lot of rolled eyes on this one, but it's something I've wanted to make since I was a little kid only I realize now that I'm 23 and actually have the resources to do this. I'm not so sure that this is something that would ever help my UE, but I want to make it just to make it. It is <ahem> a Grappling Gun. Not loud, using compressed CO2 to shoot a small projectile designed to clamp into or around anything it hits. I'm working on detailed blueprints to send to a friend of mine who is a machinist. I figure, what the Hell, it's surely worth a shot. Any thoughts on the winching mechanism? So far, it seems that it will require a series of rubberized aluminum tubes to guide the cable under and around to create a sort of harness. I have no idea if this will work when completed, only that it's gonna be really, really fun to try. I wish I could figure out a more portable design (ala, Batman), but if I can get it to work on any level I will be satisfied. Thoughts on this would be appreciated! Lemme know just how crazy this is.

Alright, you've managed to sic a mechanical engineer on yourself. Here's how I'll interpret the chances of success:
You're probably goona die testing it if you even get it to function somewhat properly. Fitting some type of winch onto yourself capable of pulling you and it would be very heavy and require a large battery or a small engine (ruled out for several obvious reasons)
The launching part would also be loud and unpredictable. We have determined that grappling hooks need to be heavy enough to heave and drag the line behind them, so launching this thing with compressed CO2 is going to take a lot of power, not to mention that you will need to find a way to pay out the cable VERY quickly and with virtually no drag or else the launched hook will go about 2 feet.
As for attaching yourself to whatever will pull you up, that's easy. Retrofit an elitist climbing harness to safely keep you attached to the death rig.
I really doubt you'll have much luck getting the hook to stick or snag something reliable enough to pull yourself up on either. Normal hand tossed hooks are pretty spooky from what I'm reading so far as far as actual hook purchase goes.
Anyways, yeah interesting idea, but it smells like hollywood and would be way too expensive and impreactical for what you'd be trying to use it for.
Any other opinions?

| | | What about a big crossbow that could lauch a hook up to some rooftop? it wouldn't need to penetrate to hold, it would just enable you to fire your hook to higher than you could normally throw it.
you'd need an arrow/hook and rope that are light enough to travel a long distance, but strong enough to support your weight on a prussik or mechanical ascender of some kind.

| | | I just had another thought, a potato gun might work better than a crossbow, you could make a hook with springloaded arms that will fit in the barrel but pop into place once it's in flight. The rope could be coiled up on the ground before firing so that it would pay out smoothly and not cause too much drag.

| | | hmmm.... the spud gun might work, if you can put up with the noise and pain in the butt of hauling it around. I bet they're illegal in Canada though (as if they're actually legal in the states, nobody's sure)
My largest potato cannon kicks hard and can really move a potato. My smallest one, the spud derringer, sends a 3/4" diameter chunk of potato about a city block with a loud popping noise.

| | | I dunno about potato guns, we used to ram corn cobs down a five foot PVC barrel with a sealed container (also PVC) on the end which, although dangerous, we would fill with propane from those torch canisters. We used to fire it across a river and land the cobs on the roof of a factory about 300 yards away. Lotsa fun, however we ended up jamming a cob so tight that it blew the barrel apart. No electric ignitions, all we used were bottle-rockets in a tiny hole in the end. Also, looking at my plans, I don't think I could find a cable strong enough to hold me and still pay out safely. Well, back to the drawing board....

Just curious... has anyone except for me actually used a grappling hook in real life ?

| | | Someone did make a motorized ascending device ("MAD") for climbing rope, powered by a small gasoline engine. Apparently it could do about 75 feet per minute and weighed about 20 lbs.
Not exactly stealthy.. or really all that fast... or portable.... or safe. But still sort of cool.

| | | I agree. Like I said, it might not work for UE, but it would be really cool to try. I keep thinking that there has to be a way...I can find ways around small problems, like the payout (by possibly magnetizing the cable and couplings around the feed out, to reduce friction, likewise with the spool that the cable would be attached to) but after taking the above mentioned points into consideration, I'm pretty much back to square one. Doesn't mean I won't stop trying, though. It'd be worth it for the novelty factor alone....

You just leave it hanging there... and make a new one. No, actually it's not very hard to get them back down. A grappling hook is harder to set than to unset. To get it to hook, once you've had a successful throw, you very slowly pull down until it catches, this can take a few tries till you get a good solid hold... To get it to unhook... Just send some *waves* up the rope, which will give it slack for the hook to let loose of it's hold, then usually a quick tug will get it to *jump* over what it was previously hooked on... watch you don't bring it down on your head though
